Report: Ravens set to acquire Eugene Monroe in trade from Jaguars

The Baltimore Ravens are set to acquire a former first-round draft pick to add to their depth along the offensive line.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, the Ravens have agreed in principle to a deal, pending a physical, with the Jacksonville Jaguars to acquire offensive tackle Eugene Monroe. The deal will send multiple third-day draft picks (rounds 4-7) to the Jaguars in exchange for Monroe.

Monroe, selected with the eighth overall pick of the 2008 NFL draft by the Jaguars, has started 62 games over the last five seasons for Jacksonville, including the first four games of this season. The Ravens have allowed Joe Flacco to be sacked 10 times already this season, tied with the New Orleans Saints for 10th most in the league through four weeks. Baltimore also is 28th in the league in rushing averaging just 64 yards a game.

Monroe could ultimately be a replacement at left tackle for Bryant McKinnie, who has struggled so far this season for the Ravens.

  1. I don’t know what they gave up to get Monroe, but whatever it was, it isn’t nearly enough. Monroe is a beast on a bad team and instantly made the Ravens a better team. He’ll be comfortable in the system by the time playoffs roll around too.

Looks like this years #2 overall pick is officially beginning his transition to left tackle

  2. He`s in the last year of his contract and Joekel isn`t necessarily transitioning well to right tackle. I guess it`s a no brainer but it`s hard as a fan to see one of the few decent players we have go… Gene Smith destroyed this team and it`s definitely getting worse before it gets better.

  3. Daryl Smith who left for the ravens in the offseason is finally getting some credit, Monroe will do the same. Both were awesome for the jags but obv didnt get much recognition in borth Florida. Im happy for these guys to get a chance elsewhere as long as Monroe brings in more picks for the rebuild,
Jockel will just slide over to his regular position at RT. Mojo will be gone next.

  4. He probaly dd not want to re-sign- at least the Jags got something for him. Anyone need a former rushing champ?

  5. Maybe the should also think about acquiring a QB too,
JUMP BALL JOE just isn’t quite the same without Q to bail is overrated and way way way over paid a$$ out.

  6. That’s all u got for a decent to good LT in this day and age? Highway robbery by Ozzie Newsome. Add 2 more pts for sacks to whichever D/ST Jax is facing this wk.

  7. Its not just McKinnie that has struggled. Its the entire line! I would say McKinnie has been one of the better performing players, next to Yanda.

Since moving to a zone-blocking scheme from a man-on-man, its been like shoving a square into a round hole!

I do like the move though.

  8. Why would Jacksonville give a starter to the SB team this past year, in their conference, for a bunch of 4-7rnd draft picks?

I am only a football fan, but the brass in Jacksonville knows less the I do, I quess. What a bunch of dopes.

I mean, really, Baltimore really needs help. You have a real solution for them. Why just hand him over for future chances? Try to play a little hard to get.

Seeing this move, the Jaqs would be better off letting Baltimore making those picks for them.

  9. That’s very cheap for a starting left tackle. No matter how many 3rd day picks there are. The Ravens avoided giving away any premium picks (rnds 1-3). Stupid by Jacksonville.

  10. We’ve just acquired a top 10 left tackle for day 3 draft picks….meanwhile the Pittsburgh steelers sit at the bottom of the AFC north below the Browns still trying to figure out what a win looks like.

    In Oz we trust.

  11. Seriously Jeff Ireland? Your team leads the league in sacks allowed, Jasksonville is only a few hours away. You couldn’t of made this deal happen?

    SMDH

  12. Monroe probably wouldn’t have been resigned after this season. May as well move Joeckel to his natural position and get started rebuilding.

Smart move by the Ravens as well – McKinnie is pretty bad.

  13. Why wouldn’t the Falcons have snuffed out this deal first? Our $100 mil QB is getting Killed. I’m a life long falcon fan but if I think this team is in trouble now I hate to think where we are if number #2 goes down with an injury that he misses a few games.

  14. Ozzie Newsome is the best GM in the game. He just has a way to add talent that will make an instant difference. Ray Lewis done, Ed Reed looks terrible, the Browns grossly overpaid for Paul Kruger, Cary Williams isn’t showing how he is #1 talent in Philadelphia…

He added Elvis Dumervil, Michael Huff, Elam and now Monroe. But I will never understand why he traded Anquan Boldin to the 49ers, that is just headscratching….

  15. Sweet move. No problem giving up multiple later day draft picks for a guy who can be really good, especially considering the compensatory picks they get for all the guys who left and those will be high. A win win for Ozzie and the Ravens. Now for a center and a tight end that can catch and get open!

  16. Matt Schaub has been sacked 11 times.
    8 td — 6 int — 2 fumbles

Joe Flacco has been sacked 12 times.
    5 td — 7 int — 2 fumbles

  17. Like re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Well, maybe at least Flacco won’t throw five picks next game.

  18. They desperately need help on the line. They have been dominated 3 of 4 games in the trenches and it’s painfully clear that Flacco cannot perform under those conditions. Good move to add some depth/competition at the tackle position. Would not be surprised to see Monroe starting at left tackle after the week 8 bye…if not sooner.

  19. I recall plenty of times when Big Mac’s performance for the Vikings was a source of major frustration. He was actually cut from the team two years ago for showing up in horrible shape, vastly overweight. Monroe seems like a consummate professional, and I’m surprised that the Jags weren’t able to finagle a first rounder out of Baltimore. Jacksonville is bad enough that their roster could use a large-scale overhaul.

  20. Unfortunately this doesn’t change the fact that Joe Flacco is an awful quarterback. It’d be cool if they could trade for some accuracy.

  21. Is he that disappointing, or is the new administration just cleaning house ? Getting a starting OT for low draft picks seem slike a steal….

  22. Going to let nature take its course on Gabbert. Like putting a lame, mentally challenged impala in a Lion’s den.

I bet “thegreatgabbert” is crying to his mom tonight.

  23. Where are all those ratbird fans that said resigning fats mckinnie was another “genius” move by the “wizard of oz”…

Enjoy your Super Bowl trophy luckimore…

    We’re both recycling…

    GO STEELERS!

  24. good move, we need to protect our 120 million dollar investment.

Joe can get stuff done when he has time. I’m a homer for him but what Baltimore fan wouldn’t be a homer for a qb that had a almost perfect post season. We had our fair share of bad qb’s so we will take our best option even if he may not be a pretty quarterback, as long as he doesn’t look like Boller I’m content.

btw the NFL is better when the Bills are good, that fan base deserves a good team.

  25. Lucky for Eugene Monroe. He gets to escape the dredges of Jacksonville to a pretty darned good team which won’t be threatening to move to another country.

  26. Jags stockpiling for the future, they are burning 2013 with Gabbert and setting up for 2014 and beyond. Maybe with a good quarterback and some good signings they can resemble the 2012 Colts, after all they are guaranteed a weak schedule next year. Who will sign Gabbert and Sanchez when theyre both released next season?

  27. Monroe has to be the happiest man in the world, escaping quite possibly the worst team in nfl history in the Jacksonville Jaguars, and heading to the Ravens, who at 2-2, are tied for first place in their division with the Browns and Bengals…

  28. Monroe is an unrestricted free agent after this year. It is going to cost the Ravens 10+ million to sign him. Add that to Flacco’s contract, and more players will be let go.

  29. Haha haha this is priceless…. Just to ensure our spot in the Johnny Manziel Sweepstakes, “Hey Blaine, there goes your blindside!!!!” Looks like a firesale in Jacksonville…. P.S. Jaguar fans thats why thier not signing tim teblow, cause evem he would will them to a couple wins….

  30. Ok, Dave Caldwell. Now you’re talking. Lets move every single player on this team (although not many) that has trade value and get these draft picks. Marcedes, Posluszny and MJD should be next. Doesn’t really matter what round pick it is, these guys will not be on team next year anyway. Keep’em coming Dave.

  31. I get that no one acquires compensatory picks better than the Ravens, but that doesn’t mean we have to just give them away for a guy with 12 games left on his contract. If this deal doesn’t come with a new contract then it’s a loss for the Ravens.

  32. Jags should have waited for the Colts to get involved, seeing as Monroe was a first round pick and everything, they surely would have given a one back to Jacksonville irrespective of his true demonstrated nfl value.

  33. Pass protection has been spotty and run blocking has been non-existent. I don’t know if McKinnie is to blame but he is certainly not the long term or possibly even the short term solution on the blind side. Glad to see the Ravens make moves in week 4 that will hopefully improve the offensive front moving forward. I see the Miami game on Sunday as an important early season matchup and hope this move will help Ravens to get the “W”. (My other team, Ga. Tech, is also in an important ACC Coastal game in Miami on Saturday. Though RAV & GT (thus, RAVGT)are u-dogs and both are coming off tough losses, look for each to beat Miami this weekend.)

  34. And not a moment too soon! Oher and McKinnie have completely caved in this season. Oz is Great and Powerful, but somehow he has not been able grasp that the game is won and lost at the line of scrimmage. Poor Joe has really taken a pounding this year. When they had to move guys out to the ends to double team, they have laft the middle open. There is no sense in having great downfield receivers if Joe never has enough time to throw.

  35. The shocking part is McKinnie can’t cut it anymore. He has taken his “Love Boat” work ethic to Baltimore and I guess the limo & stripper lifestyle is cutting into his professional work life.

  36. Another day another quality move by Jacksonville. Dumping a starter for a handful of late picks (because they’ve shown soooo much ability to draft) and ensuring they’ll bottom out yet again.

  37. Yea now we only need a center and then we can play real football. Oh I forgot we still need two tight ends and a reciever. Can we please move the draft up to next week.

  38. This is great news! A good deal for the Ravens with a much needed upgrade at LT. McKinnie stated he was Joe Flacco’s insurance policy and has been anything but…if we leave him on the line much longer, Flacco will either continue running for his life or get killed. I mean McKinnie isn’t the only problem but you can’t win games if your QB is flat on his back half the game. Bench McKinnie, take away his Twinkies and put Monroe in there…LOVE IT! Now if we could get a sub and a 6 pack of beer for Ed Dickson, Ozzie Newsome will really look like a genious!!! 😀

  39. This could show why Ozzie is the best in the league….or it could show that Ozzie realizes he didn’t have all the parts that he needed going into the season, which he can shoulder some of the blame for. Boldin gone, no great option at Center, banking on Mckinnie to step up for an entire season( Can’t stay in shape and last year showed that). They had to bring in Dallas Clark, Brandon Stokley, and Shiancoe because the receiving options aren’t there. Huff stinks, Dumervil hasn’t done a lot, remember Rolando Mcclain? Let’s just calm down on “In Ozzie We Trust”.

  40. Ozzie looked down the barrel of that 2-5 record after the Steelers game(which I predicted in July) and made a desperate move.

    Miami – Loss
    Packers – Loss
    Steelers – Loss

    Oct 21st W-L 2-5

  41. Anybody who thinks Monroe is an elite tackle hasnt been paying attention. He is in a contract year and hasnt played well at all.

Meanwhile, going 2-5 is a beautiful dream for the Steelers. Sorry to wake you, but it ain’t happening.

Meanwhile, Kevin Colbert spent Tuesday night sitting on:
    A) Two day 3 draft picks that wouldn’t have seen playing time.
    B) His thumb
    C) All of the above

Still brushing your teeth with foot powder Beau? Interesting to see which guys does the most for his team. The egg goes in your mouth not on your face…..lmao

  44. Jacksonville = Cleveland South

Baltimore took what they could from Cleveland, now they are moving on to Jacksonville. That is only fitting, because they took the franchise that we were supposed to get, so we took Cleveland’s. This is a plot just like Taken with Liam Neeson. Ultimately revenge is measured on all that were involved in the injustice.

  45. ‘Smart move for both teams. Ozzie proving once again why he’s the best GM in football.’

    Tonyugoh,

Yeah…That was a BRILLIANT move trading away Boldin who btw was a big reason they won the SB. Flacco may be paid elite money BUT he’s not an elite QB. Sorry Raven fans but right now there’s only 4 TRULY elite QB’s that can carry a franchise on their back–Brady, P. Manning, Brees, & Rodgers. That’s it. Not Matt Ryan, not Schuab, & definitely not Romo. Big Ben was definitely elite but I believe injuries have taken their toll & Eli who has played at an elite level in their two SB runs is simply not consistent enough to be considered ‘elite.’

  46. Ghost26…

Every week I watch WRs either wide open, or making acrobatic catches, or perfectly timed catches over the defender. I have watched Ravens football for a long time. We have never had a premiere Wide Receiver that can do that. Boldin was very good when he wanted to be, not in getting open, but basically willing his way to a catch. He couldn’t push off with the Ravens, like most receivers get away with. We lost the Philly game last year because of an Offensive Interference by Boldin. Boldin was not the reason why Baltimore won the Superbowl. If he made that much difference why is the media darling 49ers doing worse this year with him on the roster?

I agree Manning is elite. It is amazing what he can do with Welker, versus the stable of WRs and TEs that Brady has had. Manning is a once-in-a-lifetime like Ray Lewis at MLB. However, I would really like to see what Manning would do if Derrick Mason, or Anquan Boldin were his best and only WR. I know what Flacco has done with that. Flacco rarely misses the receiver. His problem is that the receivers are always blanketed unless they are 50 yards downfield. Fortunately he can throw that far. That is why they won the SB -not Anquan Boldin.

    Swagger,

I respect your opinion but I don’t think the reason why the Niners have struggled on offense this year is Boldin’s fault. With Crabtree out SF has no one else @ WR besides Boldin to throw the ball to. If anything the Niners would MUCH worse w/o him.

As for ‘elite’ QB’s, the names I mentioned make the players around them better. IMO elite also means that they have proven they can get it done w/o the big time WR’s or with key injuries around them. Take a look at Tom Brady & the receivers he’s gone 4-0 with. Kembrell Thompkins is an undrafted rookie!!!

As for Manning the guy has proven year after year that he makes guys better. Just look at guys like Stokely or Austin Collie or Pierre Garcon or Jacob Tamme, & now Julius Thomas. Yes he started his career with Marvin Harrison & then had Wayne & Dallas Clark but do you honestly believe Flacco can do what Peyton has done? He also can’t do what Brady does, he can’t do what Brees does, & he can’t do what Rodgers does. Flacco played great in the last two post seasons but he’s not consistently great to be in that class right now.

Monroe is a free agent at the end of this year, so basically the Ravens are getting a 12 game rental.

Yeah BUT! If Monroe doesn’t sign with the Ravens after ’13 the ravens will get a compensatory pick and, depending on the size of his contract could be a 3rd rounder……. so definitely worth the rental.

  49. None of Ozzie’s moves have panned out this season. Look at his draft picks from this season and the last two, they aren’t working either.

Can all of that “best GM in the league” nonsense.

  50. “Beast” “one of the best LTs in the league”??? Have you guys watched any Jag games for the last 3 years? Monroe was ok but that’s it. Not worth the spot he was picked. Joeckel was going to be the LT after this season anyway(for better or worse). Monroe is free agent after this season and no way he was signing back with the Jags…not sure they even wanted him anyway. So they got picks for a player they didn’t want next year and he only made them marginally “better” this year. Front office is getting ready for next year….smart.

Oh and I hate Gene Smith….carry on.

  51. Ozzie is batting an 0fer this season, how in the he# is he the best GM in the league this season? Everything he touched turned to “dust” this season.

I trust Ozzie to make bad moves this year. That excites me.

The Ravens made this move because they see it slip, slip, slipping away. The Steelers made their move because even after an 0-4 start they see this division can still be had.

A confident Ozzie Newsome wouldn’t trade a 4 and 5 for a guy who wont be with them next year.

  52. A GM’s job isn’t just during the offseason. Making moves to improve the team, even during the season, is what I expect a GM to do. If my team’s GM did nothing with huge holes on the team I’d want to know why he has given up and laid the problem solely in the coach’s lap.

I’m not one to say Oz is perfect but I am very happy he’s trying.

As many have pointed out Ravens lost a lot of pieces this year. They lost enough during FA that a few extra compensatory picks should be coming next year.
