Cards send Levi Brown to Steelers

Levi Brown AP

There’s suddenly a left tackle arms race in the AFC North.

After the Ravens made a move last night to get Eugene Monroe off the Jaguars, the Steelers are trying to keep pace.

A league source tells PFT that the Cardinals have agreed to a deal that will send tackle Levi Brown to Pittsburgh. Pending a physical, the trade will happen.

Jason La Canfora of CBS previously has reported that the two teams were “hammering out” a trade.

The Steelers have clearly been dissatisfied with their tackle play all year, rotating Kelvin Beachum in for both Mike Adams and Marcus Gilbert.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians referred to Brown as an “elite” left tackle this offseason, but he must not feel that same way after a month of regular-season games.

and people said the browns were tanking after the richardson trade? what are the cards and jaguars doing? I hope they grab a ton of draft picks from the steelers which decimate the steelers draft, then waste those picks on the next ryan leaf.

At some point, a coach will realize this guy is only a right tackle. Seems to be an epidemic for Arizona Cardinal linemen because it took Leonard Davis leaving Arizona as well for someone to realize he was a guard and not a left tackle.

The steelers have to do something. I have never seen a team comprised of so many people who are:

A: Waaaaaaaay past their prime (60% of the team)
B: Overrated their entire career (Polamalu, Big Ben)
C: Not good at all (the rest)

It serves the fan base right, though. Uneducated hill-folk, with an unparalleled (and unwarranted) arrogance.

The Steelers will get to seven rings eventually, but several other teams (Patriots, Niners, Packers, Cowboys) will get there first.

  5. eatitfanboy says: Oct 2, 2013 10:25 AM

I certainly hope that all of the people who bombarded this board killing the Browns for “tanking their season” when then they traded a running back averaging 3.5 YPA for a first round pick will be back to crush the Cardinals for trading their starting left tackle, only the most important position on the offensive line.

Last I looked, The Cards didn’t exactly have the most mobile of QBs standing back there.

  6. kevo126 says: Oct 2, 2013 10:25 AM

the steelers should stop drafting bad linemen in the first two rounds. decastro, gilbert, heyward, hood, adams, worilds, urbik…

  7. trollhammer20 says: Oct 2, 2013 10:26 AM

If Pittsburgh has any spare LBs, they could probably avoid losing any draft picks. Cards have been decimated at the position.

  8. schmitty2 says: Oct 2, 2013 10:28 AM

Levi Brown?? He is a TERRIBLE LT. You could look back at many games but watch the opening week game against the Rams. They might as well bring back Max Starks.

  9. pooflingingmonkey says: Oct 2, 2013 10:29 AM

Smart move on the part of the LAST PLACE Steelers. If they had even an average o-line, they wouldn’t be winless.

Still, you have to admit it’s kind of sad when you’re getting offensive line help from the Cardinals, who also have a pathetic front.

  10. wilsonwillbreaku says: Oct 2, 2013 10:31 AM

3.5 yards is still positive gain. To compare Levi Brown to Richardson, Richardson would have to average -3.5 yards, fumble four times a game, and run into whoever the starting QB is knocking him out for a season.

  36. phreakin says: Oct 2, 2013 11:10 AM

Not sure why Pittsburgh wanted anything to do with Levi Brown. NOBODY can be that desperate as to want to trade for the worst left tackle in the game statistically. Curious as to what the Cardinals got in return though. I assume no more than a 7th round pick. If they got more than that, they should be charged with robbery.

As for Arizona, curious they trade Levi after College is looking to be injured and missing his first ever start. But Arizona did have depth at offensive line coming into the year so they probably will slide Winston over to left tackle or maybe College when he’s healthy. I can see Justice at LT and then they can play Bobby Massey at RT. He had a pretty decent end of the year last season. Everyone here was expecting this to happen before the first game anyway so glad to see it happen now rather than letting him get blown up the entire season.

I went to the Lions and Cardinals game and watched Levi pretty much get blown by every play. The only times he didn’t is when they put Jim Dray on the left side to help with blocking or had the back come down and help. It was embarrassing.

I am absolutely astounded Tomlin would enter a season with zero depth on the O-line, which has been vulnerable to injuries over the years.
Obviously Foster’s injury forced the Steelers to make this move, strictly for depth purposes. The team’s coaching leadership is in complete disarray.

  46. randyschwimmer7 says: Oct 2, 2013 11:24 AM

  47. holeinone09 says: Oct 2, 2013 11:25 AM

  49. wryly1 says: Oct 2, 2013 11:34 AM

No NFL team trades away a good starting LT during the season, but teams with horrid OL’s (like Steelers and Ravens), are desperate for warm bodies they hope can keep their QB’s upright or mount any sort of running game.

  50. steelerben says: Oct 2, 2013 11:40 AM

Couldn’t hurt. Everyone has made mention of him not pass blocking very well, but the Steelers don’t really pass block anyway. They just expect Ben to run around piggybacking tacklers until he can make something happen. Hopefully Brown can make something happen with run blocking and the Steelers offense can build from there.

For the guy talking about the Cards tanking in the same way that everyone thought the Browns were…. Everyone knows Bruce Arians doesn’t believe in using offensive lines.

  61. truths4all says: Oct 2, 2013 12:08 PM

Ok, now the nice guy Levi Brown can be moved to the position of guard where he is best suited for. Arian’s “Elite Left Tackle” has finally proven beyond all doubt that he just is not a left tackle in the NFL. Yet he has high value as a punishing guard at a position where the demands to move backwards and handle speed rushers are at a minimum.

Who knows, Brown may even end up some day as an All-Pro at guard. Too bad the Cards did not have the vision to see early that Brown was never a left tackle, but could be an awesome guard.

If used right, Brown could certainly become a real asset for the Steelers.

From 2005 to 2007, the Cardinals selected 18 players in the draft. Before today, Levi Brown was the last of those eighteen to still be with the team — and as of a couple hours ago, he’s gone. Definitely speaks of how horribly the Cardinals draft every year.

Also, Brown was their first-round (fifth overall) pick in that ’07 draft. Of the other four players they chose, only one is still in the NFL (Alan Branch). Now I know why this team has been so abysmal for the last few years.

Usually the players (and coaches) the Cards kick to the curb find success elsewhere (Boldin even got a ring!) which will probably be true for Levi Brown.
In Arizona, they try to plug players into spots they’ve never played then wonder why it doesn’t work whereas other teams sign players to play a given position and don’t try to “jerririg” the lineup to save $$$. Good luck to the Steelers and Levi Brown…look at how it worked out for Hoyer, Horton, Whisenhunt, DRC, LSH, Rolle, Boldin, Schofield, Toler, etc.!

While Ravens fans laugh and gum bump. None of Ozzie’s moves has panned out this season. I suspect this one won’t either.

I told you Fluko would come back to his REAL normal and he looks like garbage. The Dolphins defense will destroy you this wknd.

You will be 2-5 after you play us.

This is funny, all of a sudden Eugene Monroe is an all-pro. Hint, go look at the NFL replay of the Jags games…There’s a hidden surprise in there waiting for you. Whenever he suits up, you’ll find it.

How long before they trade Fitzgerald? Seriously they could easily get a 1 and 3/4 for him and start building again in next years draft.

    Baltimore’s version of ELITE:
    Joe Flacco:
    5 TDS
    7 INTS
    2 Fumbles

Good luck for having to be tied to this bum for years upon years. Restructuring is right around the corner. Players like Suggs will be gone. Ray Rice is being used like a dope. Won’t be long before Ozzie loses EVERYBODY because of that bozo. Baltimore winning the Superbowl and Flacco’s performance was the worst thing to happen to they’re future, lol. Still will win this division even at 0-4! Sad.

btw. Protecting that stiff Palmer is a tough job for an LT. The guy does nothing to make it easy.

Kurt Warner moved at the speed of lightening. Ben shifts around and can withstand a lot of contact before dropping to a sack. Palmer is slow and folds like a cheap tent.

It’s a good day for Brown.

  89. ringheadcrusher says: Oct 2, 2013 1:23 PM

kvanhorn87, don’t say that!!! OMG, Andy Reid will grab Fitz and then the Chiefs will be kicking my team’s butt for years with no end in sight! No need to give these people good ideas. They’re dangerous enough as it is.

The Steelers may use Brown and Beachum as tackles rolling into the LT/RT spots with Adams and Gilbert.

You see that sort’ve thing with Pass Rushers/Defensive lines a lot now (Lions/Giants/etc.) but I’ve never seen it with Tackles/Offensive lines.

If it improves the blocking, we only have one problem left to solve.

    Tackling.

Oh my, I so feel like a fan of a team other than the Steelers.

I love seeing people talk about Ben being over rated.

Wonder what he could do with the protection Brady or Manning (Payton) gets?

Or how those two would do behind turnstiles Ben has to try and function behind?

Here’s a tip to all of the Steeler trolls. You’re not fans and you’re an embarrassment to all the legitimate and intelligent Steeler fans. And this is coming from a Packers fan. Also, you’re just recycling the garbage and attempting to be the “cool guy”

Logicalvoice was annoying but at least he was the first real troll on here that I saw on a regular basis. Now you guys just look like sad and pathetic tag alongs. Spending half of your day on a sports blog posting and bashing other teams.

Let me help you out. Steelers are a great and historic team in the NFL. But this year is more evidence that they need to reload/retool. They’re not making the playoffs and that sucks. Because for true NFL fans, the Steelers, Packers, Cowboys and Giants making the playoffs makes good football usually. So stop trying to justify those 4 losses, or trying to explain why they’re going to make the playoffs after some magical 12-0 run now. It’s not happening. There’s a reason the talking heads on ESPN or the NFL Network are saying the same thing. Because they all know it’s not happening either. Just go back to supporting your team instead of bashing others.

As a side note, if you’re going to spend all day online and not with Tina your imaginary girlfriend, then hang out where it’s a lot less text and dudes, and more women and pictures. Based on the posts you guys have made, pictures seem to be what you need anyway. That way you don’t burn out those last 10 brain cells trying to think too hard and reading.

    —-

    Why?

We play the Lions, Vikings, & Bears twice each. That’s 6 more wins. We play the Ravens, Browns, Steelers, that’s 3 more easy wins.

That’s 10-6 at worst. Then there’s the Eagles, Cowboys, Falcons, and Giants.

The Packers will lose one or two of those, but that’s about it.

The Steelers may lose every game.

It’s purely a salary cap move, the pick the Cards get next year may not mean much – the salary they save does.

The steelers have to do something. I have never seen a team comprised of so many people who are:

A: Waaaaaaaay past their prime (60% of the team)
B: Overrated their entire career (Polamalu, Big Ben)
C: Not good at all (the rest)

Nice math……considering that 80% of the roster is younger than 30 years old, how do you come up with 60% of the team being waaaaaaaay past their prime? Polamalu has been overrated his entire career? He was VOTED NFL Defensive Player of the Year once and he has been VOTED to the Pro Bowl at least 3 times.

  102. enoughofthatalready says: Oct 2, 2013 3:35 PM

Pittsburgh has no game. The only reason they accused the Patriots of cheating is because of their little quiet HGH controversy. Both SBs were stolen and cheated for.

No…….in one AFC Championship Game, the Patriots not only knew the defensive calls being made by the Steelers, they also knew the audible calls made to those defensive calls by the Steelers. I do not recall the Steelers doing anything themselves to steal and cheat a Super Bowl. Just because the refs made some “questionable” calls in one game does not make it so.

  103. enoughofthatalready says: Oct 2, 2013 3:37 PM

Will the Steelers and Cardinals please stop trading/swapping players and coaches? It is getting ridiculous. I know the Steelers and Cardinals had to merge during World War II for a season but now this is getting ridiculous.

  104. enoughofthatalready says: Oct 2, 2013 3:39 PM

WHAT ARE THE CARDINALS GETTING IN RETURN?

Probably a late round pick. The Steelers will have at least 6 or 7 picks in Rounds 1-4 next year so they have the picks to spend. The only problem is that they will not have the $ to extend Brown if he pans out because Heath Miller, Emmanuel Sanders, Brett Kiesel and Troy Polamalu need contracts.

  105. trollaikman8 says: Oct 2, 2013 4:11 PM

  106. tokyosandblaster says: Oct 2, 2013 4:13 PM

    Their *prime* was college.

Polamalu is overrated. Didn’t deserve those accolades.

  107. holdmadik24 says: Oct 2, 2013 4:24 PM

  108. crisper57 says: Oct 2, 2013 4:36 PM

Worst tackle (right or left) in the League. Terrible. No heart. Inability to refine his technique. Coach killer. QB killer.

Thanks for taking him off our hands, Steelers. We would’ve cut him, but we’ll take the draft pick instead.
