Flynn falls to No. 3 on Raiders depth chart

Flynn AP

At least Matt Flynn got paid.

A year after the Seahawks gave the former Packers backup $10 million to become the starter (supposedly) in Seattle, Flynn continues to slide down depth charts.  He has now plunged to No. 3 in Oakland, according to Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group.

It didn’t help that, in Flynn’s first opportunity to play, coach Dennis Allen called him out for not playing very well.

Flynn has fallen behind Matt McGloin, an undrafted rookie from Penn State.  McGloin previously bounced fourth-round rookie Tyler Wilson off the roster.

But McGloin won’t be making his first NFL start on Sunday night at 11:35 p.m. ET; Terrelle Pryor has been cleared to start when the Raiders host the Chargers.

Flynn’s free fall calls into question the wisdom of bumping Flynn’s guaranteed money from $2 million to $6.5 million.

  8. MyTeamsAllStink says: Oct 2, 2013 5:41 PM

So I probably should drop Flynn from my fantasy team now?

  9. chunkderrrty says: Oct 2, 2013 5:43 PM

You can only impersonate a real qb for so long, on the plus side hecan still pass as a matt damon impersonator.

    Thank goodness

  11. kash71 says: Oct 2, 2013 5:47 PM

It just floors me how many millions this guy made because of one good showing in a football game.

  12. westcoastraider says: Oct 2, 2013 5:52 PM

Make that dude earn his keep.. Make his useless self trot out onto the field and hold the ball for Seabass to kick it through…

  13. zeddicuszorander says: Oct 2, 2013 5:53 PM

Oakland continues to be the laughing stick of the league. What a collection if fools.

  14. souldogdave says: Oct 2, 2013 5:54 PM

It was put-up or shut-up for Flynn…and he ain’t sayin’ nothing, and didn’t do the job.

  15. noeffinway says: Oct 2, 2013 5:55 PM

Think about this when you start anointing a one-hit-wonder QB as the next big thing.

  16. Kelly's Chronicles says: Oct 2, 2013 5:56 PM

It is a testament to how awesome the Green Bay Packer coaching staff is seeing as he was so productive for us despite obviously being what, I’m sad to say, an average to below average QB.

  17. unclemoobaa1911 says: Oct 2, 2013 5:57 PM

Matt McGloin will be the starting QB by week 8.

  18. raiderlyfe510 says: Oct 2, 2013 5:58 PM

Can we please get Josh Freeman, let Al Saunders coach him up and get back to Air Coryell passing and power running.

  19. thestrategyexpert says: Oct 2, 2013 6:01 PM

I’m starting to suspect Matt Flynn is just a vessel that rich people use to launder giant piles of money. He probably has about 2 more paydays left and about 3 more plays to snap.

  20. demolition510 says: Oct 2, 2013 6:03 PM

Don’t feel sorry for him. Got paid and a hot wife

  21. rasalas says: Oct 2, 2013 6:03 PM

What’s more shocking — that Flynn never panned out, or how much you chided the Dolphins for not signing him?

  22. 808raiderinparadise says: Oct 2, 2013 6:05 PM

He’s making sandcastles at 2nd base in that photo tho…..

  23. jumbomesquite says: Oct 2, 2013 6:09 PM

The guy played well when it counted and set up his family for the rest of their lives. We should all be so lucky.

  24. seatownballers says: Oct 2, 2013 6:10 PM

    I’m shocked Seattle got a 5th and a 6th for this guy.

  27. greg2geez says: Oct 2, 2013 6:18 PM

Don’t forget Flynns super hot wife. I can’t.

  28. justwinbaby29 says: Oct 2, 2013 6:20 PM

Things are changing for the better in Oakland. I don’t think this would happen in previous season. There is much more accountability in the organization.

I’d go one step further and release Flynn and promote Wilson to 3rd string.

  29. shaggyjeff says: Oct 2, 2013 6:21 PM

Josh freeman will end up here and be successful…..reuniting with OC Greg ( Ollie) Olsen . You heard it here first

  30. lunarpie says: Oct 2, 2013 6:23 PM

If Al Davis were still alive Matt Flynn would’ve been released and not paid 1 cent.

  31. pekkle007 says: Oct 2, 2013 6:24 PM

Reggie McKenzie for GM of the yr!

  33. fordmandalay says: Oct 2, 2013 6:27 PM

Have Matt Flynn and Kevin Kolb ever been photographed together? Are we sure it’s not just one guy?

  34. waitingguilty says: Oct 2, 2013 6:29 PM

As a Redskins fan I can tell you…any QB that allows the Skins Defense to look as good as we did last week should not be on an active roster. 3rd string is a blessing for Flynn after that debacle last Sunday.

  35. 15starr says: Oct 2, 2013 6:30 PM

Flynn can thank McCarthy for all that money.. What a joke

  36. ejmstr says: Oct 2, 2013 6:34 PM

Maybe the Buc’s can switch with Oakland.

  37. orivar says: Oct 2, 2013 6:36 PM

Has their Oline been dropped on the depth chart?

  38. coltzfan166 says: Oct 2, 2013 6:39 PM

Systems QB. He had one great game while running an offense with the support of a great coaching staff and great weapons around him. But he’s not the answer to help out a struggling team.

  39. deathmonkey41 says: Oct 2, 2013 6:46 PM

This guy is the Lane Kiffin of QBs.

  40. raiderraffeal says: Oct 2, 2013 6:48 PM

Next move is Flynn gets cut to make room for WR Andre Holmes.

  41. paul82461 says: Oct 2, 2013 6:49 PM

Make him play on special teams to earn his keep

  42. thelastpieceofcheese says: Oct 2, 2013 6:56 PM

Passing on Flynn proving not to be such a bad idea is it Dolphin haters?

  45. vaughnjoe says: Oct 2, 2013 7:15 PM

I believe in second chances and sometimes thirds (looks @David Wilson) This guy has been delt more than a joker and he needs a job. I say Jags QB in a few weeks if freeman isnt there yet.

  46. kokokofinfan says: Oct 2, 2013 7:26 PM

Apparently he’s NOT in like Flynn.

  47. radrntn says: Oct 2, 2013 7:27 PM

trade him to the packers….nothing against seneca, but he played well in packers scheme.

  48. bert1913 says: Oct 2, 2013 8:12 PM

    some things never change

  49. ZakGilbertTributePosterVerified says: Oct 2, 2013 8:14 PM

Yeah, he made his money….but Kevin Kolb still holds the record as best paid back up….(five-year, $63 million deal from the Cards)

  50. saintsfan1111 says: Oct 2, 2013 8:43 PM

Yeah, but he’s paid. 2 games with the packers can make you a jillionarie.

  51. oakraid says: Oct 2, 2013 8:52 PM

Watching him last sunday he reminded me of a mini Jamarcus Russell. He should have never been allowed on the field and I hope I never see him under center in silver and black again.

  52. JMClarkent says: Oct 2, 2013 9:14 PM

Cut him and promote Tyler Wilson to #3 before someone signs him from the practice squad – at least Wilson has upside – Flynn has none.

  53. whatjusthapped says: Oct 2, 2013 9:15 PM

Its been said before but Flynn owes at least half of his salary to the Lion’s secondary that day when he went out and threw for 580 yards. Granted, he had pretty good receivers for that game but still, the Lions were absolutely terrible and that had as much to do with his performance as his WR’s.

  54. hawkstradamus says: Oct 2, 2013 9:24 PM

Google matt Flynns girlfriend and you will feel 100x less sorry for this guy.

  55. sportsguy3434 says: Oct 2, 2013 9:43 PM

Wait a minute?!? You giving a player a better contract and more money doesn’t make him play at a higher level? They should have learned that from the Jets.

And speaking of poorly run franchises, the good news for Flynn (besides 6.5M) is that he made it to the team photo so Schiano might think about bringing him to the east coast laughing stock of the NFL…

  56. aldavisisthenfl says: Oct 2, 2013 9:50 PM

Why do all these LSU guys flame out so fast?….

  57. shuttaman1990 says: Oct 2, 2013 9:59 PM

2 draft picks wasted by reggie. make it 3 by wasting a 4th on dat other QB.
He needs to be fired if he dont build a good team around pryor this offseason to put us in the playoffs next season.

  58. mikezakmn says: Oct 2, 2013 10:14 PM

renegotiate contract and come back to GB

  59. yourmomsnewfriend says: Oct 2, 2013 10:26 PM

    Choo Chooo!!!

  60. guiness17 says: Oct 2, 2013 11:17 PM

Of course Flynn looked awful. Pryor was not ruled out until sometime Saturday, did he get any snaps with the 1s during the week? Not surprised if his timing was off. Then the Raider’s 1st and 2nd string RBs go down. Then the 7 sacks…maybe those were mostly his fault?

He completed 65% of his passes, 227yds 1TD 1INT. Doesn’t seem awful to me for a start on one day’s notice. Seems like the Raiders are giving up on him awful fast.

  61. whodatnhollywood says: Oct 2, 2013 11:22 PM

Matt Flynn and Kevin Kolb: OGWs! One Game Wonders! And they got PAID! And will probably get paid again~yet JaMarcus Russell can barely get a try-out.

  62. r8dernation says: Oct 2, 2013 11:26 PM

Trade Flynn straight up for Freeman.

  63. huck222 says: Oct 2, 2013 11:51 PM

Reggie McKinzzie should be fired! Every single one of his selections and additions to the Raider organization have been “BUST”! If Mark Davis and the family don’t get rid of him at the end of the year the Raiders will be doomed another 10 years! Damn shame!

  64. blackfootkiller says: Oct 3, 2013 12:48 AM

Ya’ got to admit one thing…
If Al were still amongst us…
    Flynn would be the QB1!

  67. yungdaz says: Oct 3, 2013 7:48 AM

Never thought the day would come that Matty Ice and Terrelle Cryor would be on the same team together fighting for the position. McGloin will get his chance. WE ARE!!!

  68. ccjcsr says: Oct 3, 2013 7:56 AM

  69. Andre's Johnson says: Oct 3, 2013 8:31 AM

Who the hell is Matt McGloin?

  70. hendawg21 says: Oct 3, 2013 9:30 AM

So when does the O-line get blamed for some of this, I mean yes Flynn had moments where he held the ball too long or made bad decisions but come on that O-line wasn’t very good either. And for the mere fact that Pryor poses a different threat has maybe hidden the fact that the O-line is not that good.

  71. ncraiderfan25 says: Oct 3, 2013 9:37 AM

It’s about time! I was screaming for McGloin during the Redskins fiasco. I’m no expert but Flynn looked way out of his league.

I wonder if it ever crossed Pryor mind that sitting during that game was only adding weight to his own demise….can you say 1st pick?

  72. muskyhunter2542 says: Oct 3, 2013 10:18 AM

Career backup to Aaron Rodgers. He will get cut by Oakland and Green Bay will bring him back for the league min.

Not every team has Green Bay’s receiver core, and a QB friendly system like they have as well.

  73. keithdylan says: Oct 3, 2013 10:20 AM

At least these guys admit mistakes and move on. No one is forcing a coach to play someone. That’s a change.

  74. joetoronto says: Oct 3, 2013 1:11 PM

Yes, “Seattle must be laughing”, because they gave Flynn $26 million with $10 million guaranteed.

    Ya, they’re really laughing.

Seattle sells out every game, with max capacity.

They have a waiting list for season tickets.

The team makes the playoffs, and wins games.

Their fans are so fired up that it makes it impossible for visiting teams to win.

Did I mention that they aren’t in Oakland?

So…yeah…Seattle is laughing at the Raiders.

  76. MyTeamsAllStink says: Oct 3, 2013 3:20 PM

You do realize, right, that the Raiders’ fans are derided far and wide for their pathetic adherence to the ancient past. For the rest of us, the world is about the present and the future. I’m not a Seahawks’ fan. But I do enjoy that eclectic city, and I have to hand to the Hawks’ owners. They know how to put a great product on the field, and they are succeeding.

You’re being typically oblique if you bring up non-issues like league realignment. Maybe next, you can rattle off some more useless information about how many NFL (NFC in present terms) had to become AFC teams during the merge. Does anyone care about that? No. Just you.
