David Caldwell says Jags aren’t having a fire sale

The trade of tackle Eugene Monroe to the Ravens was not the first step in a full scale dismantling of the Jaguars roster.

That was the message General Manager David Caldwell sent on Thursday. Caldwell was asked about reports and suggestions that the Jaguars could be going the fire sale route between now and the trade deadline. According to Caldwell, players like running back Maurice Jones-Drew and linebacker Paul Posluszny will be staying Jacksonville.

“They’re not going anywhere,” Caldwell said, via the team’s website. “We feel good about those guys being here, nor do they want to go anywhere. They’re part of this team and we’re excited about having them a part of this team.”

Caldwell also said that “you’d like to have as many” draft picks as possible because of the mobility it gives you on draft day, so it’s hard to imagine that he wouldn’t be listening if someone came calling with an offer to add to the 10 picks that the Jaguars already have in hand for next year. While you might not want to publicly say you’re okay with dealing away the top players left on the roster, a team in the Jaguars’ position would have to at least consider deals that can help build a Jags team that’s playing for something other than the top pick.
