Romo says Broncos’ secondary gets away with grabbing, holding

Tony Romo AP

As Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo watches tape of the Broncos’ secondary in preparation for Sunday’s game, he’s noticing something he doesn’t like: According to Romo, the Broncos break the rules and get away with it.

Romo said the Broncos should get called for pass interference and defensive holding more than they do, and that they’ve been able to push the boundaries of the rules without getting too many penalties.

They grab, they hold, they’ve almost put a lot of pressure on the refs – whether or not they’re going to call the game close or not,” Romo said, via USA Today. “If they get called once or twice, that’s a good thing. But they’re all over guys as far as using the little tricks, I guess you could say, that good linebackers and good secondaries use when they’re playing man coverage.”

The Broncos haven’t necessarily gotten away with it quite as much as Romo suggests: Through four games Denver’s defense has been called for pass interference five times, for holding four times and for illegal contact once. But Romo making his case publicly may be a not-so-subtle suggestion to the officials working Sunday’s game that they need to be keeping a close eye on the Broncos’ secondary.

Isn’t it more traditional to complain about the officiating after the game actually starts?

Put a cork in it, Romo!

  11. frankietwothumbs says: Oct 3, 2013 6:58 PM

Dear lord, the NFL is doing everything it can to help receivers get open. They have to contribute something themselves you know.

  12. redfield11 says: Oct 3, 2013 6:58 PM

People are going to say Romo is being a sissy about complaining but this is a popular sports tactic athletes in all sports do. They put pressure on the refs to let less slide then they normally do.

  13. supermadelf says: Oct 3, 2013 6:58 PM

And he gets away with sucking/choking.

  14. ripster65 says: Oct 3, 2013 6:58 PM

It won’t make any difference in the outcome though. For what it’s worth, Romo can rest easy as the Cowboys will still be in first place of the NFC LEast even after the loss.

  18. brentwold2 says: Oct 3, 2013 7:01 PM

What a joke. Romo is pulling a Mark Jackson here. He’s trying to get the refs attention before the game starts so he can trick them into penalizing at the Broncos secondary more than they already do. Just shows that he already knows that the Cowboys stand no shot at winning this game.

Tont Romo, Mr Paper, falls and is fragile like paper. Hey bud this is football not tiddly winks.

Granted the Broncos have been a little more dirty since Peyton has been at the helm but Romo, you need to wait till the game starts before you cry and moan.

  28. sasquatch77 says: Oct 3, 2013 7:08 PM

Meanwhile, the Broncos secondary is probably loving what they’re seeing on tape. If they are already in Romo’s head, oh mercy!

I predict the Broncos will score 65 points, including Holiday returning a punt that bounces off the Gigantorvision screen.

  30. cookenbauer says: Oct 3, 2013 7:11 PM

As far as I’m concerned…let them hold. Get rid of the illegal contact rule too. Defenses are already at a huge disadvantage. Even the playing field just a bit so I don’t have to see every QB throw for 350 yards and 3 TD’s. Taking something that used to be special and making it average.

  31. somethingsmellsrotten says: Oct 3, 2013 7:11 PM

Not that I thought a lot of Romo before this but I think even less now. Pathetic.

  40. detectivejimmymcnulty says: Oct 3, 2013 7:27 PM

First of all before you call someone else an idiot, look in the mirror. I am a professor of business and I have been following football since my youth and I am in my 50s. I did not get that term from some flapjack on ESPN. I do not pay attention to what others say. I have eyes and that is what I use to observe objective behaviour as any good ethnographer would. In observing Romo, the paper and fragile comment does not mean his physical strength, it was an attack on his personaliuty. I thought that was clear, but I guess that was too much synthesis for you to figure out. The fragile coment was an attack on his complaining like a little girl who runs from a ball.

  47. armoderate says: Oct 3, 2013 7:35 PM

Typical cowgirl. Since he lacks the talent, he’s thinking he can “chum the waters” by priming the officials on calling a lot of pass interference penalties on the Broncos secondary. He wants to steal the “official” game plan from the New York Giants where the Broncos were called even when they made good plays batting the ball away. Romo’s hoping that the officials look the other way when Bryant tries to shove anyone within 10 feet of him before he goes for the ball. This is a first. I never heard of any player, especially a QB, complaining about a team getting away with penalties BEFORE a game. Vegas must have their money on Dallas.

First of all, Broncos fans, before you call Romo out, remember Romo is 1-0 against Peyton. Second, Jon Kitna beat Peyton when Romo was hurt, also. Third, before you throw stones, remember that Peyton is 9-11 in the postseason, he certainly isnt captain clutch. Dont be writing this off as a loss for the Cowboys just yet. Any given Sunday means exactly that. This will be a lot better game than people expect.

  64. irunjt says: Oct 3, 2013 8:08 PM

Denver has been flagged the most in the league for pass interference (5 in four games) and is tied for 1st in defensive holding penalties (3 in four games).

If you’re called for it the most, are you still “pushing the boundaries of the rules without getting too many penalties”?

I have said this once before the broncos haven’t played a team with a good defense yet , I’m not saying that Dallas has an elite defense but I believe they r better than the first four defenses the broncos have faced so they will run into problems n this game good luck on trying to get 40-50 points against Dallas. GO COWBOYS!!!

    A few comments:

1 – the NFL wants Manning to win again and will “help” just as they did when they wanted the Bus to win one and helped the Steroids.

2 – If you think it’s so successful, maybe your team should do it.

3 – Part of the problem may be that you suck Romo – win a playoff game (oh, excuse me, win a second playoff game in your entire career) and then complain.

Also, you forgot his stellar playoff record. And his awesome record in December. Tony Romo is awesome!

Romo is a classic choke artist. He has proven this over and over again.

You have to give Denver the edge in this one. But sorry Denver fans, you will not make it to the big one. How many seasons have we been through this with wonder boy Manning. He always flames out in playoffs just like last year. As many times as this guy has taken his team to the playoffs and only one Superbowl win. The one Superbowl he did win they were wild card team. The Cowboys secondary needs to try some of these “tricks” because what they have been doing isn’t working. Eli and Rivers with over 400 yards passing. Peyton will get at least that much.

Eli Manning passed for over 400 yards against the cowboys secondary in the first game.

Rivers with over 400 last week against the secondary.

the Defense is just trying to keep the games interesting for the offense……
they are trying to give away yardage to help make it fair
