Romo says Broncos’ secondary gets away with grabbing, holding

AP

As Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo watches tape of the Broncos’ secondary in preparation for Sunday’s game, he’s noticing something he doesn’t like: According to Romo, the Broncos break the rules and get away with it.

Romo said the Broncos should get called for pass interference and defensive holding more than they do, and that they’ve been able to push the boundaries of the rules without getting too many penalties.

They grab, they hold, they’ve almost put a lot of pressure on the refs – whether or not they’re going to call the game close or not,” Romo said, via USA Today. “If they get called once or twice, that’s a good thing. But they’re all over guys as far as using the little tricks, I guess you could say, that good linebackers and good secondaries use when they’re playing man coverage.”

The Broncos haven’t necessarily gotten away with it quite as much as Romo suggests: Through four games Denver’s defense has been called for pass interference five times, for holding four times and for illegal contact once. But Romo making his case publicly may be a not-so-subtle suggestion to the officials working Sunday’s game that they need to be keeping a close eye on the Broncos’ secondary.

  1. Isn’t it more traditional to complain about the officiating after the game actually starts?

  2. Looks like Romo forgot that you’re supposed to make sorry excuses after you’ve lost the game, not before.

  3. Waaaaaaaaah Waaaaaaaah!!!! All this crying wont keep you from being Tony Romo and throwing interceptions! #RESPECTTHEORANGE

  4. Dear lord, the NFL is doing everything it can to help receivers get open. They have to contribute something themselves you know.

  5. People are going to say Romo is being a sissy about complaining but this is a popular sports tactic athletes in all sports do. They put pressure on the refs to let less slide then they normally do.

  6. It won’t make any difference in the outcome though. For what it’s worth, Romo can rest easy as the Cowboys will still be in first place of the NFC LEast even after the loss.

  7. Is this really a smart thing to do Romo? You really want the Broncos to come at your defense like its a X-mas ham?

  8. What a joke. Romo is pulling a Mark Jackson here. He’s trying to get the refs attention before the game starts so he can trick them into penalizing at the Broncos secondary more than they already do. Just shows that he already knows that the Cowboys stand no shot at winning this game.

  9. Wow! Sounds a lot like Peyton and Polian before they used to play the Pats back in the day…..but I can’t imagine Romo will get the same preferential treatment as Peyton.

  10. He’s just prepping everyone now instead of making excuses after the game. I’m sure he just wants to get a head start on this game based on what the Broncos are doing to their opponents.

  11. Tont Romo, Mr Paper, falls and is fragile like paper. Hey bud this is football not tiddly winks.

Granted the Broncos have been a little more dirty since Peyton has been at the helm but Romo, you need to wait till the game starts before you cry and moan.

  12. Meanwhile, the Broncos secondary is probably loving what they’re seeing on tape. If they are already in Romo’s head, oh mercy!

I predict the Broncos will score 65 points, including Holiday returning a punt that bounces off the Gigantorvision screen.

  13. my first post had typo, sorry

  14. That’s how the Donkeys have always won…by getting away with crap. Just look at the offensive line and how much they hold…but yet no calls.

It’s because the NFL loves them some money making, Buick commercial loving losers.

  15. As far as I’m concerned…let them hold. Get rid of the illegal contact rule too. Defenses are already at a huge disadvantage. Even the playing field just a bit so I don’t have to see every QB throw for 350 yards and 3 TD’s. Taking something that used to be special and making it average.

  16. Del Rio is a helluva D-Coordinator. His guys are well coached to know how to bend-but-not-break the rules.

  17. I don’t see it making that big of a difference, Romo’s going to be throwing it to the Broncos anyway.

  18. edithpiaf51 says Romo is made of paper–Romo is one of the toughest QBs in the league–editpiaf51 would not be able to kiss Romo’s backside if standing tippy toe on his momma’s shoulders–edithpiaf51 is exemplary of football know-nothings who parrot the flapjacks on ESPN and makes himself look like an idiot by attacking others and trolling on message boards like this #truthhurts #mommycalls

  19. *sigh*

The Harbaugh tactic of crying bitter tears about what the refs are or aren’t going to call on the other team seems to be spreading through the league.

Not that I thought a lot of Romo before this but I think even less now. Pathetic.

  20. Phil Jackson was the master of doing things like this. He was considered a “genius” for it. Of course when you win 11 rings you can get away with a looooooooot more.

  21. Just like his owner, making excuses for the loss already.

Next we’ll hear they aren’t supposed to win anyway, because Denver was favored by the oddsmakers.

Therefore no big deal that they lost.

First of all before you call someone else an idiot, look in the mirror. I am a professor of business and I have been following football since my youth and I am in my 50s. I did not get that term from some flapjack on ESPN. I do not pay attention to what others say. I have eyes and that is what I use to observe objective behaviour as any good ethnographer would. In observing Romo, the paper and fragile comment does not mean his physical strength, it was an attack on his personaliuty. I thought that was clear, but I guess that was too much synthesis for you to figure out. The fragile coment was an attack on his complaining like a little girl who runs from a ball.

  23. Last year they made Ray Lewis a Champion and this year it’ll be Peyton the dreamy QB in Rocky Mountain High. Oh, just think of the story lines…

    NFL….Not-Forreal-League

  24. Typical cowgirl. Since he lacks the talent, he’s thinking he can “chum the waters” by priming the officials on calling a lot of pass interference penalties on the Broncos secondary. He wants to steal the “official” game plan from the New York Giants where the Broncos were called even when they made good plays batting the ball away. Romo’s hoping that the officials look the other way when Bryant tries to shove anyone within 10 feet of him before he goes for the ball. This is a first. I never heard of any player, especially a QB, complaining about a team getting away with penalties BEFORE a game. Vegas must have their money on Dallas.

  25. No comment on the crying for each team but you have to say if you watch more than your favorite teams, the officiating is suspect in each game.

Typical cowgirl? Oh you mean the team with 5 Suoerbowls, yeah that makes no sense. No talent? Look up the highest qb rating in the NFL since 2006….Romo. Look up the highest 4th qtr qb rating in NFL history…..yes it’s Room again. Guy has choked away 2 games and the defense has lost many more, not to mention he would never have the opportunity to choke if he didn’t put together so many comebacks….years prob a stat you should look up too.

So easy to spew nonsense at athletes that are bashed in the media for page views without knowing the slightest bit about their actual, not perceived, performance on the field.

  27. BIG DEAL. Its the equivelant to a baseball catcher asking the umpire about a pitch call while hes batting making sure he gets the same call when hes behind the plate. Hes the leader of his team hes just making sure he gets the right calls.

  28. Note to Romo-when you are preparing to get beat by 20, do not complain beforehand. The other team may leave in their starters longer and beat you by 40.

  29. romos lucky. offenses have it so easy nowadays. a defender even grazes a receiver and its a penalty. had he played back in the nfls early days he wouldnt have made it a year in the league.

  30. There’s a lot of grabbing in the NFL now. It seems every time a wide receiver runs a route , they look back at the refs. I guess, it’s part of the game. Stuff is getting old.

  31. I believe its legal to bump and run 5 yrds and less. Seems to me the only thing working for Dallas these days is dink and dunk, so you cant call that a foul Romo.

    =====================================

A Brady fan complaining about another quarterback getting preferential treatment?! Seriously?

  33. First of all, Broncos fans, before you call Romo out, remember Romo is 1-0 against Peyton. Second, Jon Kitna beat Peyton when Romo was hurt, also. Third, before you throw stones, remember that Peyton is 9-11 in the postseason, he certainly isnt captain clutch. Dont be writing this off as a loss for the Cowboys just yet. Any given Sunday means exactly that. This will be a lot better game than people expect.

  34. Denver has been flagged the most in the league for pass interference (5 in four games) and is tied for 1st in defensive holding penalties (3 in four games).

If you’re called for it the most, are you still “pushing the boundaries of the rules without getting too many penalties”?

  35. Talk about unfair, I know this guy named Tony Romo who got a hundred million dollar contract for being a losing quarterback.

  36. Romo beat the undead rated 9-0 colts in 2009 with Manning.. They can do it again. Defense needs to play strong.

You are right, he is not mr clutch like his brother. Peyton chokes in the playoffs and Tim Tebow won more playoff games for the Broncos than Peyton Manning.

  38. the refs n all games need to step up their games they call things that don’t really happen and they don’t call things that do happen maybe this will get their attention. I have said this once before the broncos haven’t played a team with a good defense yet , I’m not saying that Dallas has an elite defense but I believe they r better than the first four defenses the broncos have faced so they will run into problems n this game good luck on trying to get 40-50 points against Dallas. GO COWBOYS!!!

  39. A few comments:

1 – the NFL wants Manning to win again and will “help” just as they did when they wanted the Bus to win one and helped the Steroids.

2 – If you think it’s so successful, maybe your team should do it.

3 – Part of the problem may be that you suck Romo – win a playoff game (oh, excuse me, win a second playoff game in your entire career) and then complain.

Wow! I had no idea Tony Romo was so awesome – how many Superbowls has he won? MVPs?? Hmm..thought so.

  41. You mean the Patriots aren’t the only team that tries to push the rules to try and win? Shocking. Good teams stretch the rules to win. I say win come up with a catchy name for it like ‘HoldingGate’. Goodell should take away the Broncos 1st round draft pick next year and fine John Fox 500,000.

  42. Shatho1 Your the only one with any common scence on here. Romo has beat them when they were undefeated with the Colts.Gave Manning his first lost, and beat them can.Romo is a humble guy and takes the fall for his teams mistakes, and never talked about any other team. He has a fair bitch about them, because he is right, and the Refs, seemed to favor. If they are not fair why be there.Peyton Manning big deal.Don’t hate on Romo or the Cowboys ,you just may eat your words haters.

  43. Stats don’t lie…
130-130 since Switzer was eating hot dogs on the sideline.
    8-8 last two seasons.
1 playoff win in last two decades.
    Yet they never shut up….

  44. So is that the same excuse he gave for the Chiefs and Chargers? And here I thought it was because the NFC East was the weakest division in the NFL and getting whipped by the AFC Westers. Keep looking for that edge Tony.

Also, you forgot his stellar playoff record. And his awesome record in December. Tony Romo is awesome!

Romo is a classic choke artist. He has proven this over and over again.

As a matter of fact, I actually had to check my calender, because I thought that by reading his comments, we may have already been in December and Tony was making excuses for why they are going to get blown out this weekend.

  46. Let’s be real, just like offensive holding, defensive holding or interference is like a common complaint of fans from every team against any opponent.

Unless it’s not blatant homerism by the refs…. Considering how much the rule book has been tweaked to favor the passing game, I can’t exactly get too angry for a few miss calls.

  47. Thats right Romo get the refs focused on the Broncos secondary before the game!! Go Cowboys!!!!

  48. This comment by Romo is classless. It’s weak and its lame. Man up and play the game.

Keep the complaining about the refs behind closed doors. Work hard on the things you can control and let your bosses deal with issues with the league and refs.

  49. thats a normal thing in the NFL as far as the broncos and 49ers go ..thoe 2 teams have always gotten away with holds and pass interference and then once the game is out of reach then the refs will call a few on them so it dont look so bad…i been following NFL for 40 plus years and yes i noticed that along time ago…good call Romo

  50. The next time your all pro TE puts out his arms, tugs at the defender then cuts to an open spot I want you to tell the refs you shouldn’t accept the first down and do it over.

No secondary holds and grabs more than Seattle
    ———————————————————-

    That needs to be repeated.

and Romo shows again another reason why he’ll never be a top echelon QB

  52. You have to give Denver the edge in this one. But sorry Denver fans, you will not make it to the big one. How many seasons have we been through this with wonder boy Manning. He always flames out in playoffs just like last year. As many times as this guy has taken his team to the playoffs and only one Superbowl win. The one Superbowl he did win they were wild card team. For some reason having a by week really hurts Manning’s play. Sorry Denver fans.

  53. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Oct 4, 2013 8:18 AM

The Cowboys secondary needs to try some of these “tricks” because what they have been doing isn’t working. Eli and Rivers with over 400 yards passing. Peyton will get at least that much.

What does Eli have to do with the cowboys? please clarify

  54. the Defense is just trying to keep the games interesting for the offense……
they are trying to give away yardage to help make it fair
