Bills’ Eric Wood rips “classless” Browns after EJ Manuel injury

EJ Manuel AP

Bills center Eric Wood says players on the Browns showed poor sportsmanship after Buffalo quarterback EJ Manuel left Thursday night’s game with a knee injury.

Wood said the hit that Browns safety Tashuan Gipson put on Manuel wasn’t dirty, but the way the Browns acted afterward was “classless.”

The hit was fine,” Wood told ESPN.com. “What ticked me off was the way [the Browns] acted afterwards. I hope our defense never acts that way when they injure an opposing quarterback. You have to show some class in that situation.”

Wood says Cleveland safety T.J. Ward yelled that the Browns were “going to get him” after Manuel went down. Ward denies that he said that.

Manuel is scheduled for an MRI today on his injured knee.

You read the comments from the guy who hit Manuel and it sounded like he was gunning for him, but it would not have mattered at all if the ROOKIE QB got out of bounds.

The extra three yards is no where near as valuable as him being on the field. Live and learn.

  2. dsigrey says: Oct 4, 2013 1:10 PM

This is why the running QB will never last in this league. Pocket passers will always be what this league is about.

Yep, It’s ok. 7-9 for the Browns with Weeden. Too bad hometown hero is done. Classless players and fans.

  4. 23rdusernameused says: Oct 4, 2013 1:10 PM

He should’a run out of bounds!! All EJ’s fault! You’re on the field, running, you can be hit, end of story!

  5. osidebrownsfan says: Oct 4, 2013 1:10 PM

Yada, Yada, Yada. Does he really think the D was celebrating that Manuel got hurt? It was the play itself that was being celebrated. With the rare exception of a few individuals, I don’t believe players want to see someone get a season ending injury.

  7. thestrategyexpert says: Oct 4, 2013 1:11 PM

No you don’t have to show class in that situation if all you care about is winning, and the Browns got the job done and won the game and now they are atop of their division. Sounds to me like Eric Wood is the one who doesn’t get it. Class is not mandatory to win, and you need to worry about figuring out how to win games instead of providing behavioral advice to people who could care less about what your opinions are of how they should carry themselves. They don’t have time to pay attention to you Eric Wood, they are too busy beating lesser teams at football games as opposed to competing for a congeniality competition. Why don’t you go for that trophy instead so that you can win at something this year?

So, the Browns were ‘going to get him’ after he was put out with a clean hit. I would have thought is classless if Gipson said he was ‘going to get him’ before the hit. At least their QB didn’t take a head shot on a slide.

Yeah, cuz Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton, Randall Cunningham, and Roger Staughbach had lousy careers.

And because no pocket passer QB ever got injured.

  15. williamwallacewouldhavebeenaraider says: Oct 4, 2013 1:21 PM

Everybody keeps calling Manuel a runnin QB most likely cuz he’s black. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Watch some games from his FSU days he barely ran

  16. wtfchiefs says: Oct 4, 2013 1:21 PM

I remember Bengals players high fiving and Madieu Williams dancing on the field when Trent Green was being put on a stretcher at Arrowhead in 2006. Saying “going to get him” seems a little weak to get angry about. Besides, if you’re a big lineman and some little safety is mouthing off, you should show him who’s boss, not whine to the media.

  17. bengalskuta82 says: Oct 4, 2013 1:21 PM

I’m not surprised! Those Brownies on defense play a little dirt and get away with holding. They got caught multiple times in the last 4 games.
I guess the reason is they’re NOT use to winning and not use to having people talking about them so I think the attention is getting them too hyped that they are having issues staying calm on the field …lol

  18. ubepunkedagain says: Oct 4, 2013 1:21 PM

No comment from Wood on the head hunting hit by Alonso on Hoyer though? Can you say sore loser.

  19. ronarch13 says: Oct 4, 2013 1:22 PM

  20. shayeezy says: Oct 4, 2013 1:23 PM

hilariously ironic. alonso’s hit on hoyer was much worse and unnecessary.

  21. ihatethejets23 says: Oct 4, 2013 1:23 PM

@osidebrownsfan What was there to celebrate? Manual ran for a first down. The hit was a low hit at Manual’s knee. Why would that be celebrated? I could see if Greg Little made the play because he celebrates every little thing.

  22. ilovefootball2525 says: Oct 4, 2013 1:24 PM

EJ Manuel got hurt AFTER Hoyer got hurt. The hit on Hoyer should have drawn a flag, but didn’t…Hoyer is out for the year..Manuel is not…um, why is a member of the Bills complaining?

  23. shayeezy says: Oct 4, 2013 1:24 PM

alonso is fun to watch but he’s a maniac, on and off the field, and will probably maim a lot of other players over the course of his career. the way he drove hoyer into the ground when he was already sliding is what caused the ACL tear – it was hard to watch.

  24. tmh87 says: Oct 4, 2013 1:26 PM

I’m a bills fan and have never posted here before but this incident with the hit on EJ got me fired up. Watch the replay of the hit afterward. Gipson was so excited that he hurt EJ and the celebration was ridiculous. So, now I have another team to hate with the Steelers and patriots!!!

  25. urbusted2 says: Oct 4, 2013 1:27 PM

The hit (helmet to helmet) on Hoyer who was in the process of sliding WAS a cheap shot. You watch, the NFL is going to agree. Remember, there are two sides to every story.

  33. 80sbroncofan says: Oct 4, 2013 1:35 PM

I think this is funny this is coming out. Watch the replays of the game. The Bills were celebrating when Hoyer went down. Yet, not a peep about it today out of the winning teams side. Can’t take a loss like a man.

  36. ezwriter69 says: Oct 4, 2013 1:43 PM

osidebrownsfan… if they were celebrating knocking a guy out of bounds after he just picked up a first down with a fifteen yard run on third down then that’s more disgusting if they WERE celebrating the injury, which you of course KNOW is utter bullbleep. C’mon, this was payback, pure and simple, and you know it.

  37. clwb419 says: Oct 4, 2013 1:44 PM

Well, apparently he knows about classless – Kiko Alonso had 2 helmet to helmet hits last night (one on Hoyer one on Ogbannaya) & neither came back into the game.

  38. ubepunkedagain says: Oct 4, 2013 1:44 PM

Lol at Bill Fan. Wood whines like they do. I seen the Bills holding so much last night and not get called it was sickening. On that run by Spiller Mayock stopped mid-sentence on the replay when he seen it and didn’t say a word. He didn’t want to see a replay on the Hoyer hit but wanted to see one when Ward avoided contact over the middle. I have never seen a team whine and Cry so much(accept for Caughlins Jaguars) trying to manipulate the game. Still no word from Wood on the “classless” hit by Alonso on a sliding Hoyer? Shameful.

  39. wingz101 says: Oct 4, 2013 1:44 PM

Not a Bills fan in anyway but watching this game I noticed the Brownies were also really going low on the Buffalo DE’s. I know its legal and all, but I really think it shouldn’t be.

In defense of the Brownies (on the Manual hit) I don’t think players realize what happened. Fans and guys that cover the game are looking at it from great angles, players are down on the field looking through traffic, fighting off blockers etc. All they know is someone made a great/good/TD saving play. They are happy …

  40. devidisi says: Oct 4, 2013 1:44 PM

  41. ravensterps says: Oct 4, 2013 1:45 PM

Considering the Bills blew out Hoyer’s ACL while HE WAS SLIDING, I don’t think Wood has much room to talk.

After Sunday, you will be 2-3, not living up to the Superbowl Predictions many people had for the Bungles coming into the season.

The hit was not dirty on Manuel, and both teams were playing with a lot of fire last night. I dont think Gipson was celebrating the fact that he hurt EJ, think he was just celebrating the big hit. I live in Bills country and am a Browns fan, and the way the bills played last night, I gained alot of respect for the team and the direction they are going in the future, however, the fans are still obnoxiously stupid.

To the commenters. Wow. I should watch the replay to see if the bills celebrated after the hoyer hit. Also it’s ironic for you tough guys to at the same time call “illegal hits from kiko” in the same sentence. Kilos shoulder hit him first and he had a pathetic slide. That said Manuel should I went out of bounds sooner.

  69. damand2 says: Oct 4, 2013 3:13 PM

Alonso’s hit was helmet to helmet and for that deserved to draw a penalty. Hoyer’s attempted slide resembled a cut and by that time Alsonso had already approached the tackle and clearly tries to pull off and does not intend to drive Hoyer into the ground.

Manuel should have gone out of bounds after getting the first down (similar situation to RGIII’s injury). Gipson was clearly cheering at the end of the play, No one but him will know why. The fact is injuries happen in football and always will unless Goodell puts them all in skirts and turns games into a team party. Even then you might have the occasional burnt tongue.

  70. billsboy88 says: Oct 4, 2013 3:18 PM

    @bengalskuta82

If only there were a good way to compare the Browns and Bengals in some sort of head to head matchup that could have happened lately, like oh say, last week, that could accurately measure a winner and a loser in this “what have you done for me lately” league of yours.

I never said winning was more important than human authenticity, you just flat out made that up. Also not showing class has NOTHING to do with being authentic or not. They were absolutely authentic because they showed no class. That was their choice and nature, if they put on an act to show class when instinctually they didn’t want to, then that is a lack of authenticity. But this is the opposite case, they were acting like their true selves!

    @ go Bills
How many championships have the Bills won? The Browns have won the 3rd most in NFL history.
    —————————————————-

And how many since the merger? oh thats right, none…

@bigblackzaranek: The same amount your team has.

I’m a bills fan and have never posted here before but this incident with the hit on EJ got me fired up. Watch the replay of the hit afterward. Gipson was so excited that he hurt EJ and the celebration was ridiculous. So, now I have another team to hate with the Steelers and patriots!!!

    —————————————————-

Don’t be an idiot. Gipson was celebrating a CLEAN HIT on the THIGH in which E.J. hyper-extends his knee. On the other hand, you bums were giving high fives on the real dirty hit on Hoyer. Stop your complaining, we’re the ones who lost our Quarterback for the season from a dirty hit, not you. How bout you and your franchise show a little class yourselves and take the L like men. We as Cleveland fans have been doing it for years.

  89. upstaterules says: Oct 4, 2013 6:20 PM

Alonso didn’t take Hoyer’s knees out. I know Cleveland fans might have a problem with Anatomy 101. It has been said they don’t know their butt from a whole in the ground. However, Wood is right, pretty classless from a team that Bills fans HAD a lot of respect for!!!

  90. billsfan1 says: Oct 4, 2013 6:36 PM

I laugh at browns fans yapping about a helmet to helmet hit.. Hoyer went out with a knee injury… Just an FYI. Much like you talking how ej should have stepped out of bounds sooner, hoyer should have slid properly. Sure you won the game, but Kiko won the war…

I have always been led to believe that one of the goals of the defense is to knock good offensive players out of the game. Both teams accomplished that.

  93. bagjr387 says: Oct 4, 2013 7:35 PM

Its pretty easy to say both injuries were because of the QB’s, and their bad timing…Hoyer doesn’t slide, and Kiko times a clean hit perfectly. EJ gets his first down, and goes out of bounds, and doesnt get touched…I am at a loss here, Whats up with two blue collar cities bashing each other?

One of those classless Cleveland fans also chucked a beer can at a Tampa Bay Rays player during the MLB Wild Card game. While the game was still at hand.

At this rate, Bernie Kosar getting busted for another DUI and blaming it on Obama isn’t far behind.

    Classless players, classless fans.

  95. mobil4life says: Oct 4, 2013 7:52 PM

Shut up. I live in buffalo. Bills fans were cheering when Hoyer got injured. I’m not a Browns fan either. Manuel should have went out of bounds earlier.

Cleveland is the most depressing sports city. Ask Lebron.
I’m glad we’re in Cincinnati. I feel bad for those loyal fans..keep cheering.lol

This is why the running QB will never last in this league. Pocket passers will always be what this league is about.
    ——————————

The future says otherwise. Are you an old man or stuck in the past? You and the 400+ thumps up clowns are most likely biased fans with pocket passing QB’s LOL… wow

  101. bukes111 says: Oct 4, 2013 9:22 PM

@dsigrey a running qb will be fine because there is enough rules to protect them. EJ should have went out of bounce and Hoyer and many of the other qbs in the league have to learn how to slide. The Hoyer slide was ridiculous. He could have tore his ligaments w/o the hit.
But the point is if an athletic qb can keep his pride in check & run smart, they’ll be fine.

Ummmm, I’m gonna go out on a limb on this one and say it’s because they LOST. Our offence with the backup QB scored. Our special teams scored. Oh yea and our defense scored. Maybe if Mr. Wood & the rest of the BB offensive line were doing there job. You know like actually protecting their QB, He would of not needed to sprint for a first down and get tackled.
