Manuel has LCL sprain, won’t need surgery

Bills rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel was the lucky one last night.

After Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer was lost for the season to an ACL tear, Manuel escaped relatively well.

Bills coach Doug Marrone said, via the team’s official Twitter account, that Manuel suffered a sprain of the lateral collateral ligament (one of the lesser-known CLs) and would miss “a few weeks.”

That’s good news for the long-term for the Bills, but they will need to add somebody to get them through until then. Backup Jeff Tuel is the only other quarterback on the 53-man roster at the moment, though they are carrying Thaddeus Lewis around on the practice squad.

  1. Two starting QBs knocked out the same day Josh Freeman gets realesed..we will find out if the Browns are serious about winning this year..They dont have much to lose by bringing him in for the rest of the year

  2. I hate to say it, but that’s just our luck.

Here’s to another miserable, boring 5-11 season in Buffalo.

  3. Might not take long for Josh Freeman to find a job after all. Hoyer out for the year… Manuel out for a few weeks. .. Oakland’s Flynn not working out… maybe not a starting QB position, but a lot of backup spots with chances to start are opening up

  4. Being out for a “few” weeks might just be a worst case scenario. You can’t really bring in someone like Freeman to hold down the starting job for him for four weeks, you can’t trade for someone, and the options to sign off the street are on the street for a reason. It is much like the situation with the Titans, you’ve got a defined starter that your future is tied to and you don’t have a whole lot in the backup department.

Tuel might be able to shoulder the load until EJ is back, but in a division with New England and Miami both playing winning football, and the Jets somehow in contention still, losing three of the next five ends their season.

Here’s hoping that Buffalo can be patient and wait for Manuel to be all the way healed up instead of rushing him back, even if it tanks their season.

  5. I don’t see Freeman happening. He wants to start so when Manuel gets healthy it’ll be right back to the bench for Freeman. I think Cleveland and Jacksonville are the only places he can start the rest of the season.

  6. Tuel looked really good in preseason……. when he worked with the starters. The coaches were comfortable enough to go with him in Week 1 had it been necessary. His performance in preseason makes me more comfortable than a Freeman/Leinart/Quinn fire drill.

  7. As a Ravens fan I laugh at the other 31 starting QBs in the nfl. They are all soft and get injured during the year. Flacco stands strong, stays healthy, and wins the Superbowl MVP Award.

  8. As a Bills fan I laugh at how many sacks the Bills got on your clueless Flacco. He had recievers that could bail him out last year….he’s done this year buddy. He may as well be injured because he will suck all year….

  9. Dear Jake Locker:

Please notice that both quarterbacks last night were injured when each failed to protect himself. Your reputation for toughness is already secure with us, so please make use of those slides you learned as a baseball star.

    Sincerely,
    Titans Fans

  11. The Bills would be dumb to go after Freeman. Manuel is the guy and if they are honest they’d know that no matter how good they’ve looked this isn’t the year.

Bite the bullet for a few games, get Manuel back and get him as much time as possible with no one looking over his shoulder.

  12. I can’t believe Tuel is on an NFL roster. You can’t tell me there isn’t somebody, anybody, to step in. I thought Jordan Palmer looked decent with the Bears, not sure why they didn’t sign him. Hell, Trent Edwards would be better than Tuel.

The “LCL” is actually the Fibular Collateral Ligament. (Today’s anatomy lesson)

The LCL….Lateral Collateral Ligament is AKA the FCL. In the medical world, either term means the same thing. So thanks for the useless anatomy lesson!

Joe Flacco isn’t good enough to shine the shoes of Ryan Tannehill. The Rat Birds are a team of no good convicts who can only dream to reach the skills of the greatest football franchise ever, the Miami Dolphins.

AND throws 5 INTS during ONE GAME to a secondary full of number 2’s!! another news flash… no one wants that guy either, esp since he makes 22, hahahhhahaha, 22, ahahahahahahahhahahahah, 22 million a year!! lololol

  16. At least it wasn’t a season-ending injury. I know that Tuel was put into a difficult situation last night, but I’d still like to see Thad Lewis get a shot in Manuel’s absence. He showed poise against the Steelers last year and appeared to do well in the preseason this year.

  17. Hardly a good situation regarless of who might be available on the street.

If a player is good enough to be on a roster, they are on a roster. I do not think the Bills have much of a choice but to sign a sub standard guy in hopes he can manage an offense effectively enough to not lose. The Defense there looks really good and is the reason for the Bills successes this season.

Even with a healthy E.J., I wasn’t betting on the Bills to win the division, make the playoffs or to win it all. They will be good in a year or two though. They have some talent on that team, but they are young.

  18. Hate to see this with either of these guys. Great story w/ Hoyer and EJ is a up and comer with talent. EJ is young, he’ll recover. Get well soon guys.

Dude, youre a Lions fan. 3 good years in the last 20 and youre going to talk trash about any other team in the leauge? Up until 2 years ago the Lions were the laughing stock of the NFL for almost two decades.
