Panthers, Giants complete Jon Beason trade

New Orleans Saints v Carolina Panthers Getty Images

Jon Beason is a New York Giant.

A league source tells PFT that the trade of Beason from the Panthers to the Giants has been completed after Beason passed his physical today.

The oft-injured Beason played in just one game in 2011 and four games in 2012. He started the first two games for the Panthers this year but was taken out of the starting lineup in Week Three. He may not ever be the same physically as he was early in his career, but he’s at least healthy enough to pass the Giants’ physical.

And even if he’s not the same player he once was, the Giants think he can help their defense. Considering how the Giants’ defense has played so far this season, it’s easy to see why they believe Beason can be an upgrade.

As a skins fan, I want to say that I don’t want him to re-gain his post injury form because he could be huge for the Giants if he is

Sam Huff right now would be an upgrade.

Hopefully we didn’t give up more than a 4 for Beason.

The defense hasn’t been that bad. Stop browsing the stat columns on ESPN. The defense has been very good until the offense went on its 3 and out merry go round for 5-6 straight drives, when they tire out. And the PPG category isn’t reflective of the defense, as some of those TDs have been scored on INT returns, punt returns and so forth. People who watch the games and know what they’re watching knows the defense is not the issue for the Giants, although he will help, if healthy.

Everything emanates from your offensive line play. Can’t say it enough on here. Offensive line affects EVERY UNIT on your team. When your offensive line plays well, everyone else has a leg up to play better. When your offensive line is porous, everyone is negatively affected — the running game, the pass protection and the QB, the defense, special teams, everyone is strained as a result.

But if Beason can return to 90% of his form, he’ll be alright. With the rules today, Mike LBs are basically taken out of the equation anyway. You only hear about Wills and Sams. How many games do you even hear teams’ Mikes being mentioned nowadays, as compared to before, when the rules were less slanted towards offense?

Riddle me this: If the Giants go 0-16, does Coughlin get fired? (No, I do not think the Giants are going to go 0-16. I am just curious to see what people think.)

I am looking at Beason stats. The man hasn’t done anything since 2010. This season he got beat out by Blackburn. I know it is for a later round draft pick but I seen many later round draft picks turned out to very good starters. I am still on the fence about this trade, for the Giants I am hoping Beason can bounce back to his 2010 form. I am worried about his 3 surgeries in a 17 month span and we all know the Giants history with players and injures, it isn’t good.

  7. Mr. Wright 212 says: Oct 4, 2013 4:22 PM

And I believe they gave up a 5th for him.

  8. blacknole08 says: Oct 4, 2013 4:25 PM

Im gonna miss Beason. At one point he was on the same level as Patrick Willis before all the injuries hit.

Hope he returns to form and dominates.

Jon Beason is the best thing that has NEVER HAPPENED.

I guess Reese saw that 38-0 beat down by the Panthers and figgered “how bad could this guy be, if he has all that talent in front of him?”.

Yeesh. i don’t like this move. And I’m sure I’m gonna hate it even more when i learn what the Giants gave up for him.

Easy answer. If Eli supports him, he stays. If not, he goes. Eli is the only player on our team that is not expendable. Since Eli loves Coughlin, Coughlin has an open ended contract.

I love Kuechly and Davis, but Beason has been the heart and soul of the Panthers defense since he was drafted. Even when all he could do was stand on the sideline, 52 was a leader of men.

    Good luck Beast

Panthers fans are becoming Eagles fans overnight. They love to ignore how the Giants have embarrassed them on national TV many times, but will hang onto 38-0 even as they will still end up with a worse record than the Giants this year, and have no Super Bowl wins.

Does this tripe sound familiar to Giants fans?

  19. drunkencat1 says: Oct 4, 2013 5:48 PM

First of all, I have always been a big fan of Beason and you can think of him as Dan Morgan 2.0. Both could have been HOF linebackers had they stayed healthy. Both were leaders of the Panthers D.

However, Beason will never be what he was. Alot of guys never come back from Microfracture surgery. I have had it myself and maybe got a good year out of it before I wore through all that fake cartilage again and I’m just a broken down hack…not a NFL linebacker.

Beason wanted to be a starter somewhere and it was not going to happen anymore in Carolina. I’m going to miss Beason, but the Panthers have finally started running the team like they should have been.

Panthers have some big re-signs coming up including Hardy and Newton. Hurney would have never made this move and kept Beason on the roster and then ending up taking a cap hit releasing him before next season. Along with getting this team under the cap and the continued moves, I’m comfortable with Gettleman making the right moves going forward.

You can’t be serious. Eli has ZERO clout in that organization. How in the hell can a guy who throws to the other guy as much as is own, have any sway?

All he has done is still two SB MVPs from his teammates. I almost chocked laughing at that crap.

Beason was a lot of fun to watch when healthy, you always knew he gave everything he had.

You are an idiot. You act like most of the TDs against the Giants have come from STs or turnovers. There have been exactly 4 TDs from such, which means instead of the Giants giving up 36.5 PPG, they are giving up 29.5. Still bottom 5 in the league and that isn’t even accounting for the TDs that were scored by STs or Turnovers for them other teams. Yes, the Giants D has been that bad.

    @qdog112

Really eagles fan? When you Mike “the human turnover machine” Vick as your starter?

Eli brought them back in both Super Bowls in the last 2 minutes to win. You wish you had a QB that could just win a game for you late, never mind a Super Bowl.

The last time your ex-con animal torturing QB had a chance to bring a team back in the playoffs, he threw it to the other team!! Mike Vick never delivers in a big spot. Never has & never will. 1960, 53 years isn’t it? Soon it will be 54.

Don’t hate on Eli for being a 2 time Super Bowl Champion & SB MVP, just accept your eagles will never have either one.

Bad move by the Giants, they are gonna need every draft pick they can get…

Four weeks ago logicalvoicesays would have been saying how horrible of franchises the Giants and Panthers are, while claiming the Skins would be Super Bowl Champions nine out of the next ten years…

  27. saints4life57 says: Oct 4, 2013 6:58 PM

Like the man said….quit looking at the ESPN stat column. The Giants defense has kept each game close until the late 3rd Q when too many offensive 3 and outs and ridiculous turnovers have left them zapped and demoralized. It’s not like the Giants have been down 17-0 before people have taken their seats.

    Giants Broncos 10-9 at half
Giants Carolina 17-0 at half (t.o. for td)
    Giants KC 10-7 at half

Dallas offensive line was never as bad as the Giants’ was in the first three games of this season. And that still does not get Romo off the hook for being a lifelong choke artist.

I cannot stand the Giants but you don’t fire a coach with 2 Super Bowl wins. Coughlin goes when he wants to go.

Good luck to you Jon. You gave your heart to the Panther’s and I and many others will never forget. Most of these people who comment here will never know how painful this sport can be. You are a winner, and don’t ever forget that.

  39. usg1 says: Oct 5, 2013 1:47 AM

What I posted was a fact. You just choose to ignore it because you want to believe your team doesn’t absolutely suck. Your team is 0-4, and has a crap offense and defense. Keep trying to act like the defense is good though. I will sit here and watch their defense keep getting lit up every week. They are bottom 10 in yards per game too. Which the offense has no effect on. Giants fans are the dumbest fanbase in all of America. They called for Eli and Coughlin’s head the year they won the SB before they actually won of course. Now they act like Eli is a top 5 or even 10 QB, even though his career stats are middle of the road. And I heard many of you calling for Coughlin’s head this year even though he is the greatest coach your team has ever had and the main reason for your 2 SBs. You wouldn’t know football if it smacked you in the face.

  40. bosspower says: Oct 5, 2013 8:25 AM

The Giant D hasn’t been that bad. They have been getting T.O.’s in every game and The Offense comes out and gives it right back. Kevin Gilbride is the reason Eli is not top 10 stat QB. I guarantee if Eli goes to another team he will be lighting it up. ((Drew Brees anyone???)) Guys be Stat watching instead of game watching. I call them Stuart Scott fans, 3 and outs tire out your defense, which is why Victor Cruz said he wanted to go for it on 4th and 1, to help out the Defense and swing momentum more to the Giants. instead they punt and Chiefs run it to the house. If Giants Offense gets on a roll the team will go on a 5-6 gm win streak easy.

  41. bosspower says: Oct 5, 2013 8:30 AM

And one more thing……..How can you steal MVP????? you either the Most Valuable Player, or you not. Most Valuable Player wins the game for you, and if I can remember Eli won both SB in the Final Offensive Possession. Meaning without his drives they don’t win. Sounds like MVP to me!!!!!!

  42. jgedgar70 says: Oct 5, 2013 2:09 PM

Beason is a great guy and will be missed by Panthers fans. However, he has clearly lost a step. This is a good move for us. As the draft unfolds next year, we can package this and one of our own picks to move up in the middle rounds and get a better player, or we can just do a Jimmy Johnson and pick as many players as we can and remake the roster. I think Gettleman has us going in the right direction.
