Aldon Smith “doing well,” with no specific timetable to return

AP

Two weeks ago today, 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith decided to pursue in-patient rehab for substance abuse, two days after a DUI arrest.

Per a league source, Smith is “doing well.”  Another source told PFT that Smith has been in touch with some members of the organization, and that their impression also is that Smith is doing well.

There’s no timetable for Smith’s return to the team.  He remains on the non-football injury/illness list indefinitely.

Typically, in-patient rehab lasts 28 days.  It’s unclear how long Smith will need to get himself mentally and physically ready to return to the field.

  1. Scientific studies have show that drug abusers and alcoholics are rehabilitated quicker when their co-workers suffer groin injuries.

  2. Mike – the man’s life outside of, or away from football is what’s at stake here. That’ll be the hard part for him. Going back to practice and playing games will be the easy part.

I have a sensitivity towards anyone in recovery with an addiction problem, but give me a break. The guy is a millionaire, his employer is paying for top notch rehab, and he plays a game for a living. He just needs to grow up, be accountable, and realize just how lucky he is. He has every resource available to him to be successful going forward.

  4. Look we all love our teams and hate our closest competition, but life is more important than a game.

As I have a daughter that will be in high school shortly,I don’t need some drunk killing her while she is out with friends…

BTW, can I make her stay at home all four years?

People are still people regardless of financial stature. It doesn’t matter how much money he has or what he does for a living, he’s got the same human brain we all have.

Your sensitivity towards people with an addiction problem clearly does not include so much as a rudimentary knowledge or understanding of them. There are high functioning, high earning professionals in all walks of life who struggle and relapse with all sorts of addictions. You may have an opinion, but that’s different from knowing what you are talking about.

So Aldon Smith doesn’t have an easier time of being successful in his recovery than the person with the same addiction who has no money and no health insurance if they both really want it?

Aldon Smith is blessed. He’d be a fool to squander it.

  8. Thank you Indy! Now when Aldon is ready to come back, it may only be a 1-game difference with Seattle.

  9. Why isn’t how Smith is doing in rehab subject to confidentiality? What if he was doing poorly, could the “league source” leak that information? It seems to me “leave sources” should not leaking information on how a player is doing in rehab.

You keep arguing your opinion on a subject you know nothing about. When your in a hole, stop digging.

I heard he’s doing very well in rehab, he’s only drinking one bottle of a Scotch a day.
