Kelly slams door on talk of quarterback controversy, but Vick may not be able to play

With Eagles starter Mike Vick exiting before halftime of Sunday’s win over the Giants and Nick Foles playing well in place of Vick, coach Chip Kelly was unequivocal regarding the status of the starter.

No,” Kelly said in response to a reporter question on whether Foles’ performance opens up the competition again, according to Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com.

Kelly said when picking Vick in August that it was a full-season decision.

That doesn’t mean Vick will be able to play next weekend.  Vick has a hamstring injury, and he’ll have an MRI on Monday.

The Eagles travel to Tampa next weekend, where the Bucs are as desperate for a win as the Giants were today.

It was the Giants. Tebow could have probably gone out there and threw a couple of scores.

Reid lost the team when he replaced an injured Kolb with Vick…you lose your starting job to injury makes you play scared. But, I would be very glad to see Foles as the starter.

  4. eaglefan94 says: Oct 6, 2013 8:14 PM

Talks of a QB controversy is stupid. Vick left at halftime, and the Eagles team took a whole quarter to get back on track. I thought for sure they were going to blow the game.

Let Vick go at the end of the season and let Barkley and Foles fight it out for the number 1 next season! Vick will always be fun to watch but he will never be consistent enough to take you all the way!

  6. titans4evr says: Oct 6, 2013 8:18 PM

Eagles will have to ride foals to victory next week.

    Ha ha.

What make you think that Foles can take the Eagles to the promise land? Some people need to rethink what they post!!!!!

Don’t sweat the small stuff. What’s more important is the vikqueens are cellar dwelling where they belong!

Why didn’t they ask him about bring TO back. Marcus Vick said so lol

Vick was playing well before he got hurt, too.

I have no doubt Vick would have won this game just like Foles did.

  11. gopblows says: Oct 6, 2013 8:26 PM

So the BACKUP came in to preserve a 16-7 lead that he lost and:

    1. Played vs the number 32 defense.
    2. Played vs a team that prepared for Vick.
    3. Played vs a defense that has given up 30 a game.

    He is a backup…..that’s all.

Thank God for small favors! None of you are calling for Freeman. Eagles? Let the coach, coach!

    3 thoughts:

    1. Giants fans were classy as always by cheering when Vick grabbed his hamstring. I thought it was only Philly that did that?

    2. Foles is a better passer, but there is no running game without Vick’s threat to keep it on the read option.

    3. Foles is better in the red zone but Vick is better between the 20s. If any coach would run a 2 QB system, it’s Chip Kelly.

  14. bobbyhoying says: Oct 6, 2013 8:34 PM

Rest Mike as long as necessary. It is a long season and this team could win a bad division.

P.S. Thank you Tony Romo, for doing what you do when the game is on the line, once again today.

Eagles would have put up even more of Vick stayed in. Keep rolling with Vick, he has the most potential to make big plays anyways. There’s so much hate for the guy but there’s only the obvious handful of qb’s who are better.

    Kelly is so stubborn!
When you decided on Vick u were facing vanilla defenses in preseason!
Now anyone with half a brain can see that Foles is the better option!

Go ask Shady which QB is the better option… 20 carries for 46 yards. Without the read option, the running game is dead.

I remember when Vick had his breakout season. How the crystal ball is so foggy, how many would have guessed back then that the Vick-talk ten years later would be about benching the guy for backup Nick Foles!?

    Nobody knows the future…

Coming from a Steeler fan, I expect you to call for Tebow for your own team. He does win games, just sayin.

  24. dolphins4 says: Oct 6, 2013 9:29 PM

Chip would rather lose with Vick than win with Nick.Foles is going to be a great starting NFL QB if given the chance where as Vick is a runningback playing QB who will never win a championship as a starting QB.

Vick is my guy but it was nice watching Shaggy overcome the adversity and lead my boys to a victory. The A’ints played their BEST game of their season against my Birds… our D stepped up as did ST… Shaggy did his thing . Good job Nick.

Freeman is prob the best QB in the NFl – why not pick him up? Or maybe talk V. Young out of early retirement. This is ESPN world.

First place in the NFC East.

    2 – 0 in the Conference.

Seems like things are going pretty good in Philly.

Next three games are against teams with a 2 wins between them.

    Looking pretty good.

  29. newagerocker says: Oct 6, 2013 10:22 PM

I’m an Eagles fan and the reality is that a mediocre Eagles team beat a bad Giants team today. Dallas put up 48 against The Broncos 1 week after The Eagles could only muster 20 against them. The Giants are done but The Redskins will be playing better come year end. So 2nd and 3rd in the Division is wide open. As much as it pains me to say, Dallas is playing the best all around football in the NFC East right now

Nick Foles looks like Napoleon Dynamite and plays QB like Uncle Rico.

  32. iceburgskin202 says: Oct 6, 2013 11:00 PM

Let a team gameplan against a guy before naming him the starter G-men prepared for Vick. Foles took a quarter to get acclimated but then looked good…. But no run in Kelly’s offense doesn’t work. Will be interesting to see how Foles does with a team prepping for him.

  33. ace8842 says: Oct 6, 2013 11:21 PM

With Vick the offense is erratic. Big plays, big runs by Vick, but no consistency. The offense that way is not sustainable and does not win games. Foles made better reads and threw the ball anticipating routes. Vick holds the ball too long and it doesn’t get to the receiver until the defender has caught up and is draped all over him.

We know what Vick is. It’s time to find out what Foles is.

  34. somekat says: Oct 6, 2013 11:33 PM

did you vick lovers not watch the first half? He can’t hit a house with a football. He had open receivers all day and missed them again and again. Vick is an AWFUL QB. Period. He will not get better, he is on the downside of his career. He can still run, but not like he used to, but he still can’t pass a lick, and that won’t change.

If Foles “going to take us to the promised land” (stupid saying), probably not. But Foles has the ability to be better in 8 games than he is now. Vick will not be, in any way shape or form. Should Foles start next year? Only if the QB they draft isn’t ready. The offense moved better with Foles than they did with Vick, period, there is no way around it. Just like last week when Vick couldn’t do anything and Foles walked right down the field.

The ONLY thing that Vick has on Foles is running ability, which is cancelled out by the fact that Vick can’t run without getting hurt. The best QB on this roster right now wears #9, and it’s not even close. The numbers over the last 2 years prove it.

This is one of life’s great MYSTERIES , but i guess you have to live in that city to know of the few wretched clowns in the media who don’t care much for vick , and we all know it has NOTHING to do with football.

Because to many of us who watch this game that live outside that city will never get the silly disrespect, when there is print of such a topic in who should be starting.

We all know these individuals would NEVER start any of those backups QB’s over a 4 time pro bowl player in Vick , who has the eagles mind you rank 2nd in the league on offense had they OWNED the team.

you sound like the same idiots who said the same things about McNabb. Then he left Philly, and the rest of the country saw we were right

There is no “football reason” to start Vick. The Eagles won’t and can’t win this year. Not with that defense. The only person in the eagles franchise that benefits from starting Vick is Vick. He will not be here by the time this team is ready to contend, he’s not good enough to win games now, so what is the “football reason” to play him?

I am sure you agree with the “ask shady who’s better”, without looking and seeing that his ypc went up .5 in the second half.

Vick isn’t and never will be anything but a great athlete and below average qb, who isn’t as athletic as he used to be.

  38. phillysports77 says: Oct 9, 2013 3:05 AM

If we would’ve kept Kolb at QB you guys would be saying the exact same thing you say about Vick. You are a bunch of Fake Fans who jump ship when we lose but when we win you’re back.
