No touchdowns for Brady and no win for the Patriots

Tom Brady, Wallace Gilberry AP

Tom Brady will not break Drew Brees‘ record for throwing touchdown passes in the most consecutive games this season.

Brady’s streak ends at 52 games and the Patriots’ winning streak is done at four games after the Bengals held on for a 13-6 victory in Cincinnati. The Bengals looked like they were on the verge of putting the game away as they were up 10 and driving with under four minutes to play, but Giovani Bernard fumbled to open the door for the Patriots. They could only cash in for a field goal and the Bengals made the choice to trust their defense more than Andy Dalton by running three times and punting the ball back to New England.

The defense almost cracked, handing the Patriots first downs by jumping offside and roughing Brady, but they survived when Adam Jones picked off Brady at the Cincinnati 5-yard line with 16 seconds to play. It ended a miserable day for Brady, who took the field for that final drive in a monsoon and wound up completing just 18-of-38 passes on the afternoon and only one of his last 10. There were drops by several receivers, miscommunications and very little pass protection on the way to four sacks, all of which were exacerbated by an excellent Bengals defensive performance.

It wasn’t a particularly bright day for the Bengals offense either, but they came through in the fourth quarter when they needed to. They took advantage of the Patriots missing both Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly and went for it on fourth-and-goal by putting BenJarvus Green-Ellis behind moonlighting defensive tackle Domata Peko and pushing the pile for a touchdown. It made up for Peko’s false start two plays earlier and allowed the Bengals to pick up their third win of the season.

Dalton finished 20-of-27 for 212 yards and threw a costly red zone interception in the first half before leading the team to 10 points in the second half. The Bengals ran the ball well until Bernard’s fumble, using the Patriots’ weakness against them early and often, but it was a strong day for the Patriots defense overall. Linebacker Jarod Mayo was particularly effective for New England.

If Kelly’s out for any extended period, the Patriots will be threadbare at defensive tackle. We’ll see if that is deemed a bigger worry in New England than the offensive step backward.

    Andy Dalton OUTDUELED tom brady.

Cincinnati didn’t even have their #1 cornerback Leon Hall.

Maybe one day the Patriots will find a QB who really is good without Spygate.

You’re seeing now why Brady was available in the 6th round. There was nothing “genius” about picking him there. QB’s who are in the 6th round are there because they suck.

Or they get Spygate help from their coach.

credit to the bengal’s defense, they played lights out in the second half

So we finally gonna give some respect to the patriots d!? They kept Tom in the game despite probably the worst performance of his career. Patriots and Bengals defenses played very well today and are both top defenses

  6. brazzz01 says: Oct 6, 2013 4:20 PM

And so what about the TD pass “streak”.

Real game streaks are impressive. This streak was a fraud, as are all “streaks” that count only regular season games.

His real TD pass streak that got broken today started in the 2011 Super Bowl and it wasn’t even close to 52.

  7. sportsinhd says: Oct 6, 2013 4:22 PM

Completely confused by the play calling near the end of the game with the Pats on the 1 yard line. Brady threw three passes, not one rush attempt. Were they worried about keeping Brady’s TD streak alive?

  8. t8ertot says: Oct 6, 2013 4:22 PM

Bengals D is for real and Dalton came through when it mattered. Give Cincy some credit and get off New England’s jock strap, media

  11. patsbrat says: Oct 6, 2013 4:27 PM

Mike Zimmer should get the game ball today. Pats offense just couldn’t get anything going.

  12. thegenoatkinsdiet says: Oct 6, 2013 4:28 PM

If you like defense, this was a fun game to watch. I thought that the Patriots’ defense was maybe not quite as good as they seemed on paper because of the less-than-stellar teams they had played so far, but they were solid all day. Hats off to the Pats D, who played a classic AFCN kind of game.

But despite a depleted secondary, the Bengals defense was stout all day. Breaking Brady’s streak is no small feat.

  13. udub says: Oct 6, 2013 4:29 PM

Number of Tom Brady-rules-Baby-Touch-Roughing the Passer Penalties – One.

    WHO DEY!

(And, yes, I realize the Bengals have 0 Super Bowl victories, but at least they didn’t cheat to win those games. Which I’m sure they would have if they had cheated like the Patriots!)

not to mention the bengals d hasn’t allowed a 300 yard passer in almost 20 gms, facing big Ben, flacco, both Mannings, Rodgers, & now Brady in that stretch… that’s damn impressive

    Andy Dalton OUTDUELED tom brady.
    __________________________________
Another FB savant. Dalton threw for 212 yrs, o TDs and 1 INT, while scoring 13 pts. What a duel. The Bengal’s D outdueled the Pats D, pure and simple. Both played well, but due to the loss of Wilfork, Pats couldn’ stop the run, the OL couldn’t stop the Bengal’s pressure and Brady just doesn’t have any skill players to work with. Bengals deserved to win. That’s what happened.

  22. tigerlilac says: Oct 6, 2013 4:41 PM

The Bengals were impressive on defense (particularly on the goal line in the fourth quarter) and had a couple of very impressive offensive drives to control the ball. The three and out against the Patriots after Edelman’s punt return to midfield in the fourth quarter was key. The corner who got his hand on the throw (on that series 1st down) in the endzone was huge as was Amendola’s drop. The Patriots’ inside passing game (slants and inside screens) should be on a carton of milk because it is missing.

  23. tigerlilac says: Oct 6, 2013 4:44 PM

Passing records are for losers. The game is about wins and losses. Much bigger that the Patriots lost than a passing record went by the boards.

  24. patsfansknowitall says: Oct 6, 2013 4:46 PM

Definitely NOT the best of all time.

  25. idothis2 says: Oct 6, 2013 4:46 PM

dont let the final score fool you. the pats D wasnt as close as the score. Dalton was 20/27 for 212 yds. He completed 74% of his passes. The score shouldnt have been that close if he didnt throw that bad int.

  26. jr4real says: Oct 6, 2013 4:46 PM

  32. saucegarbonzo says: Oct 6, 2013 5:05 PM

I sure hope this spells the beginning of the end for Brady in New England. This performance puts to bed the argument that he’s a better leader than Manning simply because the Patriots happened to win games with lesser talent at the skilled positions than the Colts. Sure Manning had Harrison, Wayne, Stokley and Edgerrin James but what he doesn’t have is a supermodel wife, which simply means that my seething hatred for Brady hinges entirely on that fact.

  34. brazzz01 says: Oct 6, 2013 5:06 PM

Brady is being exposed by the lack of Spygate and I predict will be out of the NFL in 2 years.

Then the Patriots can finally draft a real QB who can be good without Spygate.

I suggest this time they stay away from the weaklings, system QBs, and other dreck in the 6th round.

  35. 8man says: Oct 6, 2013 5:07 PM

Wow the idiots are out in force today.

Again ? Brady is 4-1 all time against the Bengals quite a domination.

And the Steelers have won a similar percentage against the Pats over the years and haven’t dominated anything in a long time. About the only thing the Steelers can dominate these days is college girls that weigh about 1/2 of what Ben does while he’s holding them down and forcing himself on them.

Wow the Bengals have 1 whole victory against Brady and the Pats in recent time. All these moronic comments also give no credit to the current Bengals players who have a very good defense.

The spygaters love to go on Pats threads and try to get under Pats fans skins and see how many ‘thumbs down’ they can get. I think it’s hilarious. Either they think their team was beaten because of it, and it apparently ruined their lives(12 yrs and counting), or they just waste there lives posting about it, because all the ‘thumbs down’ reminds them of there childhood upbringing. Either way, I don’t know whether to laugh or pity them. Both, I think.

I’m a Rams fan and if anyone should be mad about spygate it’s me, but guess what, who cares? The Pats were not the only team to tape other teams. The only person/fans who should really be mad is Peyton Manning/Colts fans because Peyton relies on audibles so much.

First of all I am a Pats fan and I did pick theBengals yo not only win this game but also their division.Having said that if I were the Bengals I wouldn’t be to excited about today’s win. While Tom had a pretty bad game when he gets some players back his game will improve.at 36 years old his best days are behind him but he can still throw the mid yard ball and manage the clock. Dalton however is another story. He will never be the QB to take Cincinnati to the SB. As for Drew’s record it WILL be broken this season by Peyton Manning. Manning has too many offensive weapons.I am a Pats fan,I will always be a pats fan so I can say this without feeling guilt or disloyalty. It is time for # 12 to retire. He has nothing left to prove and a beautiful family that he is still young and healthy enough to enjoy. How many of us wished we could have had more time with our dad’s while growing up?I did, but he was to busy working.by the time these rookie receivers are really settled in and can learn the Pats very complicated offense Tom will be a shell of himself.I don’t think Gronk will play at all this season and even if he does,he’ll be so rusty it won’t matter. So let’s write this season off, because even if we do win our division we aren’t going anywhere in the playoffs. To think that we stood pat( no pun intended) while 10 mil (some say 8) under the salary cap was just shocking.BB is not the wizard especially when it comes to offensive draft choices,So so long to the team I have loved for these past 15 years and I bid hello to the team we will be building in the very near future. No matter how long it takes , I will be waiting patiently and rooting loudly.I am very excited for the future. Father Time waits for no man and while I have loved pretty much every minute of the Brady- Billichick era,it’s time to begin anew. Thanks to all the present and former Pats players for all the wonderful memories, but let’s move on and retool our beloved Patriots.

Where was this great Bengal defense in Game 1 against the Bears when they blew an 11 point lead in the 4th quarter and got all the Bear’s fans talking Super Bowl.

To trg7-Brady didn’t actually take a pay cut. It was more of a restructure that will net him more money at the end of his carer. All the people that are complaining about WW(I’m talking about Pats fans) they are the same ones who were screaming about his dropped passes in the playoffs and the SB.Well, you can’t have it both ways.you either accept someone faults and all or you move on.for whatever reason WW and BB could no longer live and play together harmoniously. One had to go and Welker it was.zit’s not the first time this has happend on a sports team and it certainly won’t be the last. With 5 SB appearances I the last 14 seasons I refuse to hang my head. It’s Father Times way of saying move on and rebuild you offense. Thanks Tom and company for all the great games and memories. No other team in the NFL can say that they have accomplished what my beloved Patriots have in the last 14 years.Tom Brady has OWNED this league in that time and now it’s time to pass the torch. My best guess is the new Great One will be Andrew Luck. I have aid it before and I will say it again. All these teams who have sunk soooo much money into these running QB’s will be sorry. These RG’s and Kappernicks and so on will either be sitting the bench injured or retired way to young. Coaches from pee wee league to college will go back to coaching QB’s to play from the pocket where they belong.I’m not saying a mobile QB is not a good thing, but your QB should not be racking up the kind of rushing yards that your running back does.Especially when no one teaches them how to slide properly.IE-RG3.You would think after all his years at QB in HS and college SOMEONE would have taught him not to slide head first.

It’s time to re-sign The Terminator (John Connor). I noticed that when the Bengals used a “Fullback”, it was Smith… and not the Orson Charles. Using Peko at the goal-line is cute. But this is the NFL. We should be fielding a true FB and not trying anymore of the experiments.

Contrary to all these guys saying Dalton is “clutch” and “outdualed” Brady, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Dalton looks not-so-good again. Not as bad as last week but still not good. One person said he had a TD. No, actually that was a rushing TD. He had a BAD INT in the red zone earlier in the game then came off the field as he and Jay Gruden were yelling at each other. The kid finally feels the pressure. The coaches kept blowing him full of false hope so he felt comfortable. Not so much now. If it wasn’t for the defense, we could be 1-4 or even 0-5. The D has kept us in every single game. I know the Green Bay game was high scoring but the D won that game for us, plain and simple.

The couching really sucks..Year after year they let great players go and that means Brady has to start all over again. After 30 years as a patriots fan I left to follow Welker and go with Denver. The patriots treated Welker like crap so they will get just what they deserve… a really bad season…what goes around comes around as they say… and yes manning is the best quarter back that I have ever seen……Tom is like the 5th best now….

For the record: Pats did NOT go 16-0 after Spygate. If you start with a false premise, you will always have a false conclusion. Pats went 16-0 during Spygate, because they were caught cheating during the 1st game of that season, against the Jets, and were allowed to keep the win, because Goodell loves Kraft, and allowed it. Truth is: Pats haven’t won a SB since. Tom Brady is a very talented QB, but not a great one, and doesn’t deserve 3 rings. Everyone in the NFL knows it, including Tom.

All of the commentary about the genius of the almighty Tom Brady and Bill B has been about their amazing ability to adjust. They have won all games until now. They were supposed to beat the unidentified Bengals. The amazing patriots are known for playing great in bad weather, too. They got their behinds handed to them. Brady was shell shocked. Bellichek got out-coached. This is not a fluke, or a bad day. The patriots were soundly beat. I don’t care who was out on injury for them. The Bengals’ top CB and DE were out. This was supposed to be a Brady field day with Leon Hall and Michael Johnson on the side lines.
Coach Lewis is a very hard working and intelligent Head Coach that should get respect for his contribution in turning COMPLETELY around this franchise. He definitely deserves credit for OUT COACHING NE.
Always remember how Monday’s commentary would have been about the Super patriots had they won…

Wow! Pats fans can be sore losers. You get beat in a good defensive battle then come here and talk smack about how dominant your team has been in the past. Doesn’t matter how many times you’ve beaten the Bengals in the past you lost Sunday and that’s all that counts now. We had critical players out just like you did so get over it and take it like a man.
