Report: Vikings currently the most likely destination for Freeman

Freeman Getty Images

As previously mentioned, Jay Glazer of FOX strongly linked quarterback Josh Freeman to the Raiders.  Glazer linked Freeman even more strongly to the Vikings.

Per Glazer, Freeman has spoken with coach Leslie Frazier and G.M. Rick Spielman.  Glazer calls Minnesota the “most desirable option” for Freeman.

The Vikings likely wouldn’t bring Freeman in without a plan to use him.  Currently, Minnesota is on a bye.  Starter Christian Ponder missed the Week Four win over the Steelers with a rib injury, and veteran Matt Cassel drew praise from teammates in pulling off the win.

We’ve heard for a while that Freeman’s first choice would be Minnesota, given the presence of running back Adrian Peterson, strong to quite strong weapons at receiver and tight end, and a defense that still has some punch.

From Minnesota’s perspective, there are two good reasons to be interested in Freeman:  October 25, 2012 and September 18, 2011.

Last year, Freeman engineered a 36-17 win over the Vikings in Minnesota.  The prior year, Freeman helped dig the Bucs out of a 17-0 halftime hole to upend the Vikings in the Metrodome, 24-20.

Freeman hasn’t played quite as well in plenty of other games, including the final 10 in Tampa.  But with Ponder continuing to struggle and Cassel being good but not great, it could make sense for the Vikings to give the ball to a guy who already is 2-0 in the place where the team plays its home games.

Poor Adrian Peterson. Like going from Scott Mitchell to Charlie Batch…

You guys mentioned every team in the league!!!! You have absolutely no idea where he is going!!!

  3. jakec4 says: Oct 6, 2013 3:05 PM

So basically Freeman wants to be a game manager in a temperature controlled environment.

  4. therealraider says: Oct 6, 2013 3:06 PM

I’m inclined to believe that Freeman to the Raiders was just speculative fodder by reporters trying to break news first.

Thank you god. Stay away from the Raiders freeman. We don’t need you.

  7. racksie says: Oct 6, 2013 3:08 PM

This is bizarre to me. Take a messy qb’s situation and make it even messier? Not against Freeman, but this really upsets the team dynamic. We shall see….

  8. jerrykill4pres says: Oct 6, 2013 3:09 PM

NO! Please say no! To much drama already surrounding this situation!

Highest scoring teams in the NFL… Broncos are number 1… Next four teams are from the NFC north… Cassel and even Ponder moved the offense just fine. Worry more about DEFENSE! You can’t win in the NFL if your defense can’t get off the field.

    That’s a fact Jack!

  9. bucrightoff says: Oct 6, 2013 3:09 PM

    Josh Freeman’s best season (2010): 3451 yards, 61% completion, 25 TDs 6 INTs

    Matt Cassel’s best season (2010): 3116 yards, 59% completion, 27 TDs 7INTs

So why bring in a guy who will cause a distraction when you have basically the same guy already on your roster?

  10. Spencer says: Oct 6, 2013 3:11 PM

Feel kinda bad for Cassel, interested in seeing how this whole thing pans out.

  11. ther3alslimshady says: Oct 6, 2013 3:13 PM

Die hard Vikings fan right here and right now part of me is like NO, we can work with Cassell.. the other part is YES, this guys has shown that he CAN play… I mean why not I guess… Cassell is 1-0 though…

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  13. conormacleod says: Oct 6, 2013 3:14 PM

That will essentially turn the page on Ponder. But it also gives the Vikings 3 “not great” QB’s.

  14. truths4all says: Oct 6, 2013 3:14 PM

    NEWS FLASH!!!

I hear VERY STRONGLY the Russian League will pay Freeman millions to play for them. Besides the money, they also offered Freeman an exemption from being drug tested (easy to do since they do not test anyone). Can Glazer’s Strongly Interested Vikings top that?

Can’t wait with bated breath to hear that the Colts, Broncos, Cowboys, Bears, Panthers, and Falcons are also ‘Strongly” interested too.

Betcha the Freeman camp is paying Glazer shill money to keep his name alive during today’s games.

  15. swenny19 says: Oct 6, 2013 3:17 PM

Just what the Vikings need. Another sub par qb with a 15% chance of ever playing one decent season…

  16. hmmm71 says: Oct 6, 2013 3:21 PM

Get him signed to an incentive filled contract.

  17. norsedrew says: Oct 6, 2013 3:23 PM

….”a defense that still has some punch”…. did I read that right?

I can’t help but put a HUGE part of the blame off the Vikings 1-3 record on a defense that doesn’t seem to have much punch at all this season.

Losing Winfield was probably a much bigger blow than they expected this year.

  18. guruvious says: Oct 6, 2013 3:24 PM

  19. 84smooninlambeaunevergetsold says: Oct 6, 2013 3:25 PM

    Go to Buffalo, please.
Or Cleveland, or Oakland, or New York, or…

If cassel was not here I would be thrilled to take freeman…but I’m more confident with cassel. Vikings should release ponder and take freeman as a backup.

I actually think Cleveland makes the most sense for freeman. Great options out wide. Better chance at starting.

  24. packfan0492 says: Oct 6, 2013 3:35 PM

  25. govtminion says: Oct 6, 2013 3:37 PM

It was one thing when we went through this ‘where will he go?’ crap with Peyton Manning a couple of years ago, but… the constant speculation and attention on a player who never has been exactly top-level talent in the first place is really getting old. Hoping he signs somewhere tomorrow just so we don’t have to hear about him anymore.

you mean the defense that caused 4 turnovers in back to back losses to the bears and browns? if ponder and the offense could have actually held the ball and put some points up the defense wouldn’t have been in position to lose it at the end.

Report: reportedly, there is a team in Winnipeg that is actively seeking the services of Freeman, but it’s not the bombers.
Per a source with knowledge, the Winnipeg Jets are inquiring about Freeman as a goalie. “That big block head of his could stop any puck” says Jets head coach.

  29. nflpoker says: Oct 6, 2013 3:56 PM

If Freeman were to come to Minnesota, it would mean 1 of 2 things:

    1) Ponder goes on season ending IR, OR
    2) Ponder is cut.

I would go with #1 right now, with #2 possibily happening at the end of the season.

If another QB comes here, says the Vikings are not interested in talking with him about a new contract after his rookie one expires at the end of this year.

Oh well, Samantha can make things all better for him.

    Do you watch football?

    Offensively speaking…
    2013 Vikings are averaging 28.8ppg…
    2012 Vikings averaged 22.9ppg

    Defensively speaking…
2013 Vikings are giving up 30.8ppg
    2012 Vikings gave up 21.9 ppg….

You can’t expect to win games when your defense gives up more points than your offense scores. I thought the object of the game was to outscore your opponent. When your defense has a chance to win the game on 3out of the 4 games you’ve played, and loses it in 2 out of 3… I’m sorry, but that falls on your defense.

The offense is averaging almost 6ppg more this year, and the defense is giving up almost 9 ppg more… Figure it out! According to those numbers, the offense is scoring more, but the defense is stinking up the joint even worse than it did last year!

  33. spyder9669 says: Oct 6, 2013 4:22 PM

At least we will lose every game while this guy learns the offense. Thats assuming he’s capable of learning an offense. Either way we will be able to secure a top flight QB in the draft.

YES I AGREE. The Vikings Defense is slacking greatly, but WHY NOT? We are 1-3. Bring a guy with a chip on his shoulder and see what he can do. He is only 25 and has shown promise. The BUCS blame Freeman for the mess, but the whole team is in shambles. Ponder hasn’t stepped up this season, 2TDS 5INT. Cassel is fine, but not the answer for a superbowl. Let’s go with Freeman and don’t look back.

  45. thetooloftools says: Oct 6, 2013 5:13 PM

Wherever he lands is better then Tampa Bay. They need to throw their coach out as soon as possible. Once a coach loses a team, he’s not getting it back. [The Giants coach is the exception. ]

  46. immafubared says: Oct 6, 2013 5:24 PM

Just a hunch, but I believe he only wants to play for a black coach. I think his problem in Tampa was due to having a white coach as boss telling him what to do.

  49. immafubared says: Oct 6, 2013 5:36 PM

I think the Vikes seeing Casell have a decent outing, and they have a lot invested in Ponder time wise, they think he is still the guy, I say Freeman is way more interested in them then they are in him.

Here is Freemans problem, were game 5 now. Any team that takes him will need three weeks for him to learn the play book so that’s game 8 and you get a whopping 8 games from the guy. If he sucks, your done. Kiss your season goodbye because he will be free at the end of the season. Who the hell wants that?

  54. banlarson says: Oct 6, 2013 6:19 PM

The ONLY way picking up Freeman makes any sense is if the Vikings cut ties with Ponder. No way can you have 3 average (at their best) QBs on the same roster. If they do this they must cut Ponder, keep playing Cassell until Freeman proves in practice he a) knows the offense (aka – can hand off to AP), and b) can hit a WR and not a DB.

Either way the Vikings pick a QB in round 1 of the 2014 draft. To me this makes no sense, Freeman is in some ways worse than Ponder, definitely not a long term solution. One good thing going for Freeman though, he is NOT Ponder.

    Lets see

    1. Ponder is out 1-12 weeks depending on who you listen to, has an injured rib near the heart and cannot throw

    2. Cassel had a good game but is not mobile and except for playing against the Steelers D line has look horrid this year. How many hits can Cassel take before he is out.

    3. Then there is not really ready MTB and WEBB who has not thrown since the playoffs.

    4. No reason to look to upgrade your QB roster with a mobile young QB who has an arm, can be accurate, has had very good years and bad ones and is not a perfect guy. No need here at all.

    5. I’m for the Seattle method. Keep bringing in QBs and have competition until you find one that works.

    6. Bring back Winfield too.

  65. tokyosandblaster says: Oct 6, 2013 10:28 PM

Rumor has it they’re interested in bringing him in to help out what is considered to be the worst defense in the NFC North (by far). Maybe he can tackle someone. Probably not, but hey… 3-13 is better than 2-14. He could be that difference.

  66. bobnelsonjr says: Oct 7, 2013 1:21 AM

The vikings signing Freeman make a lot of sense.

    1) He will never be cheaper to sign than now.

    2) Freeman’s work ethic and team loyalty will fit right in with the franchise.

    3) Minnesota fans love black QB’s.

    4) Freeman can play for another 10 years.

    5) Playing in that artificial environment of the metrodome fits Freeman’s style.

    6) Freeman will provide the hope that there is always next year.
