It took until the third quarter but the San Diego Chargers finally got on the scoreboard against the Oakland Raiders.
How they did so was a bit unusual.
After putting together their only really sustained drive of the game, Nick Novak had a 37-yard field goal attempt blocked by Tracy Porter. However, the deflection bounced directly to Ladarius Green and he picked up and converted the first down with a 5-yard gain on 4th and 2 to give the Chargers a fresh set of downs.
Philip Rivers looked to connect with Keenan Allen for an 11-yard touchdown, but the call on the field was overturned on review as Allen only managed to get one foot in-bounds.
The Chargers couldn’t find the endzone and had to settle for another field goal try. Novak connected on his second attempt of the drive from 35 yards out to give San Diego their first points of the game. Following the score, the Raiders still held a 17-3 lead before Charles Woodson returned a fumble from Danny Woodhead for a touchdown to give Oakland a 24-3 cushion.
