Coughlin on Eli: A couple of those plays were terrible

Philadelphia Eagles v New York Giants Getty Images

The Giants fell to 0-5 on Sunday by following what’s quickly become a familiar script for them this season.

They kept the game close into the second half before completely unraveling under an avalanche of mental and physical mistakes that allowed the Eagles to run away with the game in a rout. Three of those mistakes were interceptions thrown by Eli Manning, which combined with three intentional grounding penalties to make for another bad day for the quarterback in a season that’s yet to produce a good day.

After the game, coach Tom Coughlin said Manning was “way, way too good a player” to have thrown 12 interceptions already this season and said that the quarterback needs to stop trying to conjure up plays out of thin air.

“I honestly believe that he’s trying so hard to get us a win, he’s almost put too much on himself,” Coughlin said, via Gary Myers of the New York Daily News. “He keeps it all pretty much inside. I’m not making excuses. There were a couple of those plays that were terrible.”

Manning agreed that he needs to do a better job of taking a sack or throwing the ball away when he’s under pressure, something that’s easier said than done when you’re under pressure on almost every snap because your offensive line is struggling. It still has do be done, though, especially if the Giants are unwilling to otherwise alter their offensive approach to deal with the reality that’s playing out on the field every week.

You’ve got no problem benching RBs for 3 games for one fumble. You hate Wilson so much you made him the 3rd string RB for the entire year last year after 1 fumble. You benched Wilson for 3 games and played NO TALENT STREET FREE AGENTS over him rather than give him the ball after 1 bad game. The person who leads the giants in carries for the years, who you deemed better than Wilson for the first quarter of the season is now a free agent with no offers.

Yet Eli, who leads the league in turnovers and most likely pick 6s does not get replaced by some guy signed off the street. Nor does he get benched for the backup to teach him a lesson.

At least you came out and committed to giving Brandon Jacobs, who fumbled this game, more carries because, well who knows why. Jacobs was out of football for a year before you decided that he was the missing ingredient. At least you two can talk about the good old days while your team is getting blown out and Eli is on pace to set turnover records. You did Jacobs a solid and in the end, isn’t that more important than winning?

Eli Manning has been terrible this year.

  5. wferg1121 says: Oct 7, 2013 7:24 AM

I didn’t think Eli played terrible, I thought the first interception he was facemasked while he was throwing, the second he got hit while throwing, and the defender made a great play… The last pick Nicks quit on his route. The intentional groundings were bad, but lets face it if he took the sack, they still lost the down, and yards.. I thought if he took the sack he still would have been 10 yards back anyways.. If anything I can’t blame him for trying… Eli looks as Jerry Reese once said “skittish” in that pocket, truthfully I don’t blame him.

The Giants GM Jerry Reese needs to take full Responsibility for this retched nose dive the Giants have taken this year. Not Eli & Co. he was asleep at the wheel when he very well knew that he needed to start buiding an offensive line. He’s been riding the gravy train for the past two years doing absolutely nothing after their XLVI victory.

  8. gpete1962 says: Oct 7, 2013 7:45 AM

Gilbride is the most Unimaginative Offensive coordinator in the league. Combine that with the worst O-line in football and you’ve got the recipe for an 0-5 start.

show me in the history of this game an Offensive coordinator with 2 Superbowl’s in fours that hasn’t been offered a head coaching job?

Gilbride got turned down by UCONN and CT is his home state.

Giants have to much talent to be this bad, so it’s got to fall on the coaching staff.

Jerry Reese should go back to evaluating draft talent and leave Free agent evaluations to somebody else, because he sucks at it!

I love Coach Coughlin, but it times to start rebuilding now….. The organization is in a tough spot with an aging coach..We really need to start at the top with the GM..But we all know that story, A GM want his coach, his Qb, and so on…We have to be prepared to gut this team..Coach Knoll said his biggest mistake was not saying goodbye to the guys he won with, and that cost the Steelers dearly… Even Joe Montana ran his course with the 49ers..

    3) id HATE to see the giants fire coughlin after doing so much for us. he just needs to retire. but another season of lackluster effort, makes you wonder if they learned everything theyc ould from coughlin. it will be time to move on after season THAT DOESNT MEAN HOWEVER, you cant fire gilbride YESTERDAY!

    ———————

He wasn’t facemasked. At WORST it was a ‘blow to the head’, but there was no real force. Defender jumped in to try and tip/bat down a pass that Eli never let go. Eli then juked while the defender was still in the air and his hand slid across the eye opening on the helmet and MAYBE got a finger stuck in the side as Eli turned his head. The defender did NOT turn Eli’s head. Arguably, Eli should simply have taken the sack.

  17. arwiv says: Oct 7, 2013 8:27 AM

That was definitely a penalty on eli’s first pick…no doubt about it. The pick itself though was totally Eli’s fault.

Eli is spooked….and when Eli is spooked, he goes from a very competent QB to a very lousy one very quickly. He knows he has almost zero mobility so he tries to force things because he’s afraid of getting the you-know-what knocked out of him….and the results are what you are currently seeing.

Eli matched the coaching on the sideline and the play of many of his teammates. I guess if Cruz can’t do his stupid dance then he’s not going to give a full effort. He didn’t even try fighting for the ball on the one interception. Eli doesn’t help himself when he has that ridiculous look on his face when he is on the sideline. He doesn’t look mad, he looks like he’s lost and he’s trying to figure out why he’s at a football game.

I said my Giants were finished in preseason. I said this was a rebuilding year and they would compete for the first pick in the draft.

I said Snee, Tuck, JPP, Hynoski, Nicks, Kiwanuka, Diehl, and Baas were finished and might as well retire with dignity. I said Eli’s arm was shot and his era was over.

Whether or not you want to give the Giants a pass because they won 2 Superbowl in the last 5 years, this team looks poorly disciplined and coached. Every facet of the team; o-line, d-line, total offense, total defense, special teams, coaching, and g.m. signings looks really bad right now.

Andy Reid 5-0 with a team that went 2-14 last year. Couldn’t wait to get Andy out of town.

A QB that has never produces in a big game. His last playoff appearance (which was 2010), he threw the game away late.

    Last championship 1960.

They want a 2 time SB MVP benched & bring up David Wilson as their basis.

But when they win a REGULAR season game, they come out in droves, talking & talking & talking…

Eagle fans boo Santa, throw batteries at opposing fans, intentionally puke on fellow fans kids, act like they won the SB when they win a few regular season games after they throw a hall of fame coach outta their city as they cried the whole time. Philadelphia fans continue to prove they are NFL’s worst, most unknowledgeable fans, bar none.

  27. bigbluenationdb says: Oct 7, 2013 8:49 AM

Let’s jsut face the facts, the Giants have the least amount of talent on their roster then past 20 years. We can blame Eli all we want but he is far from the issue. Has he made some bad plays. No doubt. But what else is he to do. Our oline can’t block Phillys front four. When teams only have to rush four and we still can’t protect the QB that is bad. Philly dropped 7 into coverage all day. Cruz was doubled all day. Randle had 1 on 1 opportunities and dropped several balls.

Of the three picks, one was really bad but when Eli is getting hit in the head it is hard to fault him. Cruz can’t let a DB take the ball with 1 hand from him. Nicks quit on his route whick lead to the 3rd.

The Giants problem is the front office and coordinators. Reese has been terrible since taking over. Of the last three drafts (20 picks) we have 3 people contributing. Prince, Pugh and Randle (barely).

Free agency has been a diaster as we keep reaching for old broke down cast off from other teams. Jenkins, Rogers, Rivers, Baas and now Beason.

We wasted a 4th round pick on a QB that will never see the field. Haven’t drafted a linebacker in the top three rounds in over a decade. We have the slowest group of dline, LBs and secondary in the league.

Coordinators are awful. Fewell thinks he can play with three safeties. Not happening. Dline can’t even sniff the QB.

Gilbride – he game has past him by.

Trade Nicks now for a 2nd or 3rd rounder. No way we can pay him and Cruz and hope to remain competitive. Try to trade Tuck and Kiwi to a team that needs some help on the dline. Their days are over in NY.

I can’t wait until the April draft. Hopefully Reese won’t be leading that ship. Maybe Accorsi can come back!

  32. szwhtsup123 says: Oct 7, 2013 9:30 AM

Man this has been a tough season. I’ve never seen the Giants look so bad. The Dolphins are the AFC game and the Giants are ALWAYS the NFC game here in the Palm Beach market, and after listing it as the game all week the NFL pulled the game at the last minute and showed Indy/Seattle instead. First time I’ve seen that in 13 years, and it’s been happening all season. Thank you Roger!
While Eli hasn’t been spectacular, you have to think every time the ball is snapped he knows he’s running for his life. The coaching staff writes old, tired, outdated and predictable game plans. The Accorsi era is now really over and the Reese era is showing what it’s worth. I posted last week not to count these guys out – I’m posting this week you count these guys out now.

  33. rugdaniels says: Oct 7, 2013 9:38 AM

Coughlin is likely gone at the end of the season along with his staff. Eli is going to be here for another 4 or 5 years. The Giants really should take a season or two to rebuild and try to make another run while Eli has a few years left.

  35. anon5121 says: Oct 7, 2013 9:50 AM

I’ve always disliked Tom Coughlin. He’s been smiley and kinder lately so I’ve laid off him, but I’m reminded of why I just didn’t seem to like him no matter how much people said I should. This is the reason.

He threw his QB right under the bus here. Eli plays in this aggressive offense and everything is falling a part around him. His team is 0-5 thanks to the terrible moves the Giants brass made in their off seasons. Now that the heat is way too hot, he just throws his 2xSBMVP right under the bus. I’m disgusted, frankly.

That the Giants surrounded this once in a lifetime player with these knuckleheads is mind-blowingly arrogant. Giants fans should be livid. Not at Eli Manning, but at the giants brass.

Did any of you watch the Broncos V Cowboys game? Everytime Peyton handed the ball off to his RB I wanted to ask Reese and Coughlin to step down.

Eli has played out of his mind twice now and saved Coughlin and his Paleolithic coaching staff. But Reese got WAY too arrogant this time around and he gave actually Eli gave this PUTRID Oline, garbage dump RBs and a TE that refuses to block, and said “Ok Eli. Here is this SB countdown clock. Now go win it all ok?”

The way Coughlin has thrown Eli Manning to the wolves here is awful. Want your champ to play better? Put him and all of your players in better positions to win. YOU’RE THE COACH

  36. jakethesnake57 says: Oct 7, 2013 9:57 AM

Call Joe Bummer or Mike Lombardturd. They would trade their entire draft for Eli. The added benefit to Bummer would be that he would not have to rely on Lombardturd’s judgment to select a quarterback in the upcoming draft. As a bonus the Browns would throw in Weeden; he could double as Opie in a Broadway production!

  39. bigbwoy000 says: Oct 7, 2013 10:27 AM

    @eaglesw00t

It’s not directed at your team, it’s directed at the comments made by your fellow fans.

Just stating facts bro, no championships since 1960. The coach you just hired never won anything in college & won’t in your lousy city. The guy you ran out of town on a rail is 5-0 with a team that was 2-14 last year. You guys haven’t even sniffed a NFC championship game without Dono, another guy that was will never be appreciated for the things he brought to your city, even his blackness has been questioned by people in Philly. The sad part is, your city doesn’t even know enough to be ashamed by how they have treated these men.

Regular season wins aren’t important to anyone except Philadelphia fans. When you haven’t seen a championship in 53 years I gues that how fans act. Remember Eagle fans, you won a regular season game.

When you haven’t won a championship in 53 years, classless bad fan behavior is to be expected. Including being unappreciative to former coaches & players that gave your city years of great football.

This lost year will be a blessing in disguise. The young guys will cut their teeth and we’ll have a much needed cleansing in the offseason. Picks in the top 5 and top of each rd will let us replenish our trenches. We’ll have a ton of cap space next year. The hardest positions to fill are qb and wr and we’re set there. I don’t mind these fans Reveling in our misery. It’s their only sense of accomplishment. Still. It isn’t gonna give these crowing fans half the success we’ve had this millennium. No worries

Reese has ran this ship into the ground. Since taking over as GM he has been awful. He rode the Accorsi ship to the 2011 Super Bowl. Only a handul of players that contributed to the 2011 Super Bowl were Reese guys. Rolle (probably his 2nd best free agent signing. Cruz being his best) and JPP (his only pick that has really panned out).

Look at the last 5 drafts, roughly 30 picks. How many are contributing or All-Pro type players? He continued to draft value and not need. How many “experimental” draft picks/chances has he taken that has worked out. NONE.

Marvin Austin (2011 2nd round bust), Phillip Dillard (4th round LB 2010, never played) Chad Jones (3rd round pick 2010, never played), Jerrel Jerninhan (3rd round pick 2011, terrible. Already had depth at WR), James Brewer (4th round 2011 sucks). Wilson (1st round – will never make it in the NFL.) Rueben Randle (2nd round. Why we already had WRs), Jayron Hosley (3rd round pick 2012 awful), Adrien Robinson (4th round pick TE, hasn’t played at all).

All the above draft picks wasted during a time in which we had depth at WR but had an aging Oline and linebackers.

    WOW!

Giants finish 3-13 landing them in the top 5. Could maybe even trade down and pick up 2nd and 3rd round picks. The QB class will be deep so teams maybe will to trade up. Go ahead and trade Nicks now to a team that needs a WR and let them figure out if he is worth a huge deal. We can’t pay him and Cruz.

Hopefully we can land a franchise LT, good center and guard.

Eli should take a page from Tom Brady and take less to free up cap space.

The thing I would be most worried about if I was a Giants fan, is the way your whole team is reacting to the situation. From an outsider looking in, there seems to be a lot arm tossing and head scratching going on. That’s usually a sign of a team imploding on itself.

    At cunninghampeete,

Not sure what giant team you’re watching but, surprisingly, they are not quitting as in years past. They are battling and pulling for each other it’s just that we’re no good right now. Smart eagles fans should hope we win a few games and fall out of the top five picks. It’s a qb heavy draft and we could restock the shelves quick if the draft is run right.

  52. blu4l1fe says: Oct 7, 2013 12:35 PM

The Giants as a (whole) team is in state of disarray. They did not start this season at 0-5. They’ve played 5 games and, aside from one or two scoring drives, have looked terrible at each.

I am an avid Giants fan and it is quite painful to watch, somewhat reminisce of what took place in Eli’s rookie year.

I read the first comment and it makes a very good point. I do understand that he’s the franchise QB but one has to see that he along with majority of his teammates are struggling. It shows in his mechanics and his overall play. This season is awash, and it would not make any sense to still play him or others in the team who are underperforming. Yeah, things need to be corrected, playing the rest of the season may just correct what needs to be corrected. But at what price, injury? More bad plays? More losses?

I don’t want to see a rookie at QB but I am kind of tired of seeing the same losing effort week in and week out. I am also not sure if a first rounder would be any help. This team, or most of the players and coaches that are in it now, have strived in the face of adversity. But this team also appears lost and don’t have that same resolve.

  53. footballchic777 says: Oct 7, 2013 1:06 PM

Yes, Eli can make improvements on his choices, and lower his turnovers. NO…..THIS DOES NOT FALL ALL ON HIS SHOULDERS! Coughlin can say what he wants, but he shares culpability. And this line has been decimated with injuries. They let go of Bennett and Bradshaw. They lost Brown. Haven’t upgraded any of the positions around him, and they want to blame Eli. Wow, let’s fix it by bringing in Jacobs…….. They have Cruz, Nicks and…..Randle? Their D is giving up points, so the O has to try to not only compensate for lack of offensive production, but lack of defensive production. No…….this blame can definitely be shared.

That’s why I made a point of saying as an outsider looking in. You’ve obviously seen more of them then me, being that your a Giants fan and I’m an Eagles fan. Admittedly I’ve only watched 2 full Giants games and parts of 2 others, but I am seeing, in my opinion, a lot of the same reactions as I seen last year with the Eagles. And we know how that ended.

Also, I don’t care one way or another who you draft, sign or play on your team. I’m selfish. I only care about the Eagles getting better. Outside of that, I just want see good football, regardless of team or player.

The blame lies mostly with Reese. He got greedy. The two SBs let him think that the formula was simply QB, WR, DE and fill ins. He thought, and nobody can really blame him b/c the results speak for themselves, that if you can throw and rush the passer, you can fill in the rest of your team with bottom scrapings.

Well, our o-line has been neglected long enough that we can’t throw. Our d-ends aged overnight and now we can’t pass rush. Without either of these, teams are exploiting the crap out of the bottom scrapings littering our team.

Thankfully, we still have a QB that is great when he’s protected. We also have a WR corp that is better than all but 2 or 3 others.

After this year, we’ll cleanse the rubbish and let some of the elder, non-effective players (Tuck, Kiwi, Diehl, Webster) walk. We’ll have a ton of cap space to sign actual talent and we’ll have enough high picks (maybe more if teams are desperate for high pick QBs) to completely revamp our trenches. We can rebuild this thing back in 1 yr, 2 max. Not worried. We’re not a team that’s forced to use a high pick on a qb every other year.

Giants as a team are bad right now,but so is the whole NFC East! I could say terrible things about Eagle Fans, but I won’t, I’ll just relish about recent Superbowl victories which takes away some of the sting about how awful my Giants are right now. Winners will find a way back to form, maybe not this year, but soon. The Giants are my team good or bad, at least 2 Superbowl wins in 6 seasons are more than most teams in very recent history. Regular season wins mean nothing unless you can make noise in the postseason where it counts. The Giants have proven they can WIN it matters most. Giants &(Eli&Coughlin) 2 Superbowls other NFC EAST Teams ZERO(000000) and counting since since 2007. Keep the faith BigBlue nation, we’ll be back, because The G-Men are proven winners the rest of the NFC East not so much, yes the Giants are bad now but Giant Fans know that they can win and have Lombardi Trophies (2007-08 & 2011-12 seasons) to prove it.. BigBlue 4 Ever!!!
