Raiders cast broad net in search of possible new players

White AP

As the Raiders find themselves at a better-than-expected record of 2-3 but still struggling to remain relevant in a division with a pair of 5-0 teams, they’re looking for a few better players.

On Tuesday, the Raiders brought in 13 players for tryouts, per a league source.

They were quarterbacks Pat White, David Carr, and Trent Edwards, running backs Montario Hardesty, Keiland Williams, and Jonathan Grimes, receivers Ramses Barden and LaQuan Williams, tight end Evan Moore, and defensive backs Marcus Burley, Myron Lewis, Curtis Marsh, and Markelle Martin.

As David White of the Fresno Bee reported last night, a new third quarterback could be added after Sunday’s game against the Chiefs, when the Raiders enter their bye week.  The Raiders recently cut Matt Flynn.

The Raiders will beat the Chiefs. 5pt dogs is almost laughable. Chiefs should be 3-2 at best.

    1. You geniuses ever here of Tryout Tuesday? Every Tuesday during the regular season teams bring in players to ‘kick tires’. Maybe you should familiarize yourself with the workings of NFL teams before exposing your stupidity and ignorance to the world.

    ==================================

Actually every team in the league is doing this around this time of year when players come off suspensions and designated to return IR week coming up soon but dont let facts sway your opinion just because PFT and its cronies like to talk trash about the Raiders every chance they get. Fact is that if the refs didnt blow 2 calls or Seabass doesnt mis that FG, the Raiders beat the Colts and if Wesley Woodyard didnt give Pryor a concussion with an illegal helmet to helmet hit, we beat Washington and are 4 and 1. Just the facts mam.

  23. racerx1225 says: Oct 9, 2013 11:01 AM

Really I cant wait for us to have $70m to spend next season.

Also we lead the league in sacks thru the first few weeks and rushing and lets not forget we have 3 starting offensive lineman and 2 of their backups injured and our starting All pro quality SS in Tyvon Branch.

Raiders are doing just fine so far and look like they will be able to beat anyone with a lil more experience under Pryor’s belt.

  38. truths4all says: Oct 9, 2013 11:54 AM

Raider defenders declare it is always correct to keep casting their nets for better players, even when over 25% of the regular season has been played.

Accusing and attacking those who point that this wholesale review to find better talent for the Raiders signifies much deeper problems with their roster. Obviously, the Raiders have determined that they have done a horrible job in assembling their opening day roster and hope to fill in as many of the deep holes and lack of talent they now are aware of.

Suffice to say, no successful NFL team has ever recovered from such massive panic influx of free agents in hopes of merely trying to be competitive and finish 3rd (even with a losing record) in their division as long as they finish in front of the hapless Chargers (the ‘magic’ of Ken Whisenhunt, anyone? Blame the players, not his system).

OK Raiders fans, of course your team is in disarray and knows they messed up big time in who they kept for their opening day roster. The good thing is the Raiders are not afraid to gamble to keep them in a decent position to finish 3rd and not in the bottom of their division.

And who knows, the Chiefs could implode if the injury bug gets them when they hit the tough part of their schedule (last season, Whisenhunt’s Cards were 4-0 and then finished 5-11). You can always dream of finishing second if the Chiefs fall on their faces.

If you are an objective football fan and not a hater, you would realize that the Raiders started this season knowing that the talent level wasn’t that high because were still paying for past mistakes on the payroll (DHB, Seymour, etc.). It makes sense to look for more talent if its out there and can help the team.

Donkey fans, you’re 5-0 and thats ok if you base all your hopes on the regular season. As I recall Tebow led the Mules farther into the playoffs than that swollen headed QB you got now. Take your 2 rings (out of 6 tries), enjoy your 38 yr old QBs last couple of yrs and sit down somewhere. Despite our recent past history, all the teams in our division added up barely equals the number of rings the Raiders have. Raider Nation stand up!!!!

Every team in the NFL…MLB…NHL…Soccer….Girls Vollyball and Gymnastics…and on and on. Bring players in for tryouts…… Ill explain why…Then maybe PFT can create a headline of my explanation, So you retards that know nothing, probably don’t even watch football but have a computer in your hand with nothing better else to do, other then wait for the next access check to come in, so you can buy your milk and bread, NFL teams bring in players for try outs based on the knowledge you never know who will go down with an injury. So if you have your homework done you can bring in a guy that can contribute.

The Raiders will rebuild their offensive line in the off season when they can get rid of the dead cap money. Only jealous haters and idiots can bash a team that is hand cuffed financially and had to be totally over hauled. It’s a slow painful process but the dark clouds are fading away in Oakland. T. Pryor looks like a 21st century Randall Cunningham in the making. Saints TE Jimmy Graham will be a FA in the off season . He would look great in Silver & Black. Al Davis LOVED Vince Young ! it’s time to sign him and let him contribute to the Raiders future positively. Step by step inch by inch practice by practice and game by game the RAIDERS ARE COMING BACK FROM THE DEAD . 2 more quality drafts and the Raiders will be back in the Playoffs . Brady and Manning will be out of football soon. The Rise of the Raiders is coming. BOOK IT AND DEAL WITH IT HATERS !

Gotta love all these dumbass inbred hill-folk Raider-haters in here.

EVERY team has players in during the season for tryouts because of injuries. Even the playoff contenders bring in new guys late in the season when their 3rd string CB gets hurt in practice, or whatever. You can never have too much depth, and one of the guys might fit perfectly with your scheme and be a hidden gem off the street.

For the Raiders, we need a backup veteran QB. Behind Pryor, it’s 2 rookies. I’d like to see Pat White or maybe even Vince Young if he has anything left, they are both extremely athletic and can sub in for Pryor without missing a beat in this offense.

  64. granadafan says: Oct 9, 2013 2:31 PM

I’m a Niners fan and I don’t see anything wrong with bringing in players for tryouts when things aren’t currently working. The number seems a bit high compared to other teams, but that doesn’t mean the Raiders are horrible. I’ll take the Raiders over the Jags or Bucs right now.
