Record touchdown leads to weekly honors for Charles Woodson

Charles Woodson AP

Charles Woodson provided reminders of both how long he’s stuck around and the ability he has left against the Chargers late on Sunday night.

Woodson has been around long enough to be tied for the most defensive touchdowns in NFL history, something he couldn’t have done without still playing at a high level in his 16th NFL season. Woodson proved that he was by returning a Danny Woodhead fumble for the record-tying touchdown and icing the game with an interception of Philp Rivers in the fourth quarter.

As a result of those plays, Woodson’s been named the AFC defensive player of the week for Week 5. Woodson tossed in four tackles for good measure in a 27-17 victory that moved Oakland’s record to 2-3 on the season.

The weekly honor makes for a nice birthday present for Woodson, who turned 37 on Monday. He has 30 tackles and one sack this season to go with the two big plays he made against San Diego.

Loved Charles as a Packer. He did a ton for the team and for the franchise.

Couldn’t be happier seeing him have late career success in the place it all started for him.

Looking at the entire breadth of his career from college to the pros, in my opinion, he will go down as one of the best pure football players of all time.

The guy was built to play this game!

As a Packers fan, I knew Charles still had plenty left in the tank. I still couldn’t see the Packers paying him $13 miillion for this season.

I’m glad to see he is still playing excellent football. I wish him nothing but the best for this year and the rest of his career.

He is a legend. It was a privilege to have him play in the Green and Gold. Truly, a privilege. I was so lucky – I just turned on the game when he made the fumble recovery and scored the TD to tie the record. I hope I am as lucky to see him break it.

The fact is that his ability has diminished. He is not nearly as fast, quick, or stout as he was, even a year ago and especially 10 years ago. However, every year it seems he adapts. He has never been a liability in coverage or run support, only always a plus player. I think that is what makes him special.

The Packers let him go because he was too expensive and they wanted to get into rotations, letting others play where Woodson has played his best. If you look, Tramon Williams has been playing a lot of slot defense this year and has been fantastic. Lock-down fantastic. That opportunity does not happen if Woodson came back, as he would have filled in for the missing Hayward.

Or, worse yet, the opportunity does come and Woodson is left languishing on the bench, like Donald Driver last year.

So, I think the time was right for Woodson to march on. I am sure that the Raiders are happy to have him. And am sure that the Packers are happy to see him do well.

One of the best football players ever to play the game. Tied NFL record defensive TD’s, most consecutive seasons with a pick six, 8 pro bowls, one of two defensive players ever to win the heisman, college national champion, Super Bowl, played wide receiver and returned punts in college, NFL all decade team, 56 career interceptions. I looked up 100 best football players of all time and woodson was not on the list. What else does this guy need to do? Charles woodson is one of the greatest football players every to play the game, back me up people!
