Man accused of killing Peterson’s son was previously charged with abusing a 3-year-old

Joseph Patterson AP

The man accused in the beating death of Adrian Peterson’s 2-year-old son had previously been accused of abusing a 3-year-old.

The Argus Leader reports that Joseph Robert Patterson had previously been given a suspended sentence on two domestic abuse cases, one involving an assault on a woman he was previously involved with, and another involving an assault on that woman’s child.

Patterson was given a one-year jail term for each of those two charges, but the jail time was suspended on the condition he attend domestic violence counseling.

Now Patterson is charged with aggravated assault on an infant in the beating of Peterson’s son. Additional charges are possible now that Peterson’s son has died.

Maybe it’s just me, but I would like to think a charge of murder would be a certainty.

This isn’t like a tragic death of a child as a result of an accident or even questionable negligence. This was a beating. This guy should never be let out of prison. My preference would be a death sentence of something viewed as cruel and unusual

Say what we want to say about some of these Muslim countries but that eye-for-an-eye justice make so much sense in cases like this.

man, Ive read all the comments. Do you people ever read what you’ve written before you post it? Steelers fans–not the right place for go steelers go. I agree, but post it on a football page, not here.Asw for the jerk who cvlaims “it was reported” that AP never met his child before this, you sound like FOX not facts “news”. What is your source? Even if that were true, it doesn’t mean AP is not affected. lots of lowlife “mothers” (and I think this one would qualify, yes?) are either too vindictive or indifferent to allow biological fathers access to their children, or are even told its their child…lets not “RUSH”(pun intended) to judgment on the NFL’s top Rusher…anyways, my heart goes out to all who are grieving this little babys loss, and hope they find comfort in the fact that he is, for eternity, in the arms and loving care of his Father…

  39. purpleattack says: Oct 12, 2013 11:11 AM

AP is a hell of a man to be able to play, much less talk about it. God Bless AP and his family. If my kids turn out to be an 1/8 th of the human being he is I’ll be proud. Much respect, love and prayers sent to you AP.

This angels life is the real cost of our ‘Catch and Release’ policies. The names of the judge and parole board members who released this devil should be published. They should be held accountable for deciding that the life of this angel was an acceptable risk needed to save incarceration expenses. The cops and prosecutor did their job, let the others explain to all of us why this devil was set free to kill this baby.

  42. shlort says: Oct 12, 2013 11:12 AM

A liberalized justice system is why this was allowed to happen. People get a slap on the wrist for predatory abuses for far too long. But, hey, you can face prison after assaulting children and women 4 times, but don’t dare get 3 drunk drivings over your lifetime. 4th offence battery of a woman or child will land you in prison for 2 years in my state. 3rd offense drunk driving gets a person 5 years. Yep, our justice system is right on when alcoholism is a greater crime than selling meth to kids or beating your wife.

Anyway, this guy beats to death a 2 year old baby. That should warrant a death penalty. Most states no longer use that penalty because they say it is not a deterrent (thanks again, liberals). Well, it will deter the same person from doing it again after they get out of prison. That is reason enough to kill killers, especially the predatory types like the piece of trash in this article.

  43. realfootballfan says: Oct 12, 2013 11:15 AM

Yeah, because then this poor childs death won’t have been in vain.

Sometimes my own fan base absolutely disgusts me.

  45. gatorprof says: Oct 12, 2013 11:17 AM

The poor child again is the victim because of bad, irresponsible (both massive understatements) of adults. AP leads the way here…

AP is a sperm donor, not a father. Real father’s raise their children. They just don’t impregnate and run.

The women clearly was a rotten Mom as well. How in the world do you end up with a guy like Joseph Robert Patterson given his history? How do you not run as far away as possible when he abuses you and your son? I am assuming that this isn’t the first time.

Again, where is AP in this situation? Big bad AP is a big, bad, physical beast, but is no protector of his son?

Joseph Robert Patterson earned a bullet, period. No reason to elaborate.

Bottom line is that this little boy did not have to die if AP was a real man and was a father to his son. If he is, JRP can never have an opportunity to hurt his son.

Strange to me that society has become to accepting of this sort “pop and run” mentality. What is the illegitimacy birth rate in the AA community? Something like 70%? If men would just father their children instead of running away like cowards this world would be a better place.

  46. ravenbeaut says: Oct 12, 2013 11:18 AM

oh yeah, and as for the killer–Regina Belle is right (all the evidence is sound…what goes around comes around…) There are a lot of bad criminals in prison who may have done bad things/crtimes, but they always managed to be good fathers…lets hope he winds up in their midst…as for the mother, she should be charged at the very least with child neglect and endangerment, if she left her baby in that monsters “care”. Or even allowed him access to him. Obvously, she did one of the other, probably both.

  49. jmota222 says: Oct 12, 2013 11:20 AM

  50. nflpoker says: Oct 12, 2013 11:24 AM

Well, do you think Patterson will get a suspended sentence?? I don’t think so either. I can’t help but wonder if the legal “system” did what they were suppose to do and sentenced Patterson to prison, that that would have prevented him from meeting the boy’s mother and the boy would still be alive today.

  51. trollhammer20 says: Oct 12, 2013 11:25 AM

Suspended sentence for a guy who beats a three year old hard enough to cause welts. Meanwhile, the South Dakota prison system probably had quite a few guys in jail for relatively minor property crimes where no one was physically injured.

Therapy as a sentence is useless. You either understand you need help and go looking for it, or you choose not to do so. Throw this (insert appropriate inappropriate word here) into prison, make his life a living hell the FIRST time he beats a child, and maybe he’ll come to the conclusion that he needs to modify his behavior and will actually seek help, instead of having the help become part of his punishment.

  52. iamapatsfan says: Oct 12, 2013 11:26 AM

Can we say justice totally failed since he’d done it TWICE already and, oh, that’s ok, we’ll just let him walk the streets if he attends some meetings!

  53. wolfmanpatriot says: Oct 12, 2013 11:27 AM

  56. thejuddstir says: Oct 12, 2013 11:29 AM

This dude is a dead man walking once he gets to prison. Hardened criminals in prison don’t think highly of child beaters/molesters.
This is also a perfect example of what stayed sentences, suspended sentences, appealed sentences get you……..continued negative behavior. I wish Goodell and the NFL would come to grips with this when they keep giving certain players chance after chance. From all appearances, Johnny Jolly finally learned a lesson and has cleaned up his act after spending some time out of the NFL and in prison…..good for him. I am all for giving players a second chance but when they keep repeating the same dirty cheating tactics and know they can appeal appeal appeal and have their fines/suspensions overturned, then you cannot expect them to change their ways.

    ==============================================================

Some women don’t ever tell the guy (in this case AP) that she was knocked up. The stories i have been reading. AP had just found out that he was the father.

Until you are told you have a child sense you are not the one with something growing inside of you. I can NOT say he was just a “sperm donor” . You even said yourself she was a”rotten mom”.

Clearly AP and the mom had at least 1 sexual encounter. she got knocked up. How they met or how it all happened has not been told yet. Do not fill in the blanks that you clearly have zero knowledge about. Why do you put AP under the bus by saying he knew for years that he had a kid with her.

Your statements here should clearly disqualify you from being on any jury. For being just plain STUPID!!!!

keylimelight–really? its human nature to “vent” anger and anguish over something as unfair as the brutal taking of an innocent little child’s life by a vicious grown adult. This pretty-nearly-universal reaction is surely not “just as sick” as what that monster did to that poor baby.
There is a special place in hell for child and animal abusers.

  94. adamjac78 says: Oct 12, 2013 12:18 PM

The problem is that jail/prison is not a true deterrent. I work professionally as a psychotherapist with offenders of all types from murders to child molesters/abusers to addicts. As well as abuse and trauma victims. Incarceration is a minimal deterrent because overcrowding and decreased funding. There are many individuals who re-offend simply because the fear of jail/prison time isn’t enough. Unfortunately most offenders view it the same way children view a time-out. The proper services to decrease recidivism are dwindling due to budget cuts and the lack of belief that counseling services can change individuals.
By no means do I condone what happened to this poor child, but the system is so overloaded with similar cases. There is no way to handle either the criminal population nor the population of abused children without increasing funding to both. The problem remains that society doesn’t want to have their taxes increased to pay for services that don’t directly effect them. Society wants things taken care of, but doesn’t want to pay for it. I think increased funding for both is necessary if there are any changes to be made. Unfortunately I’m in the minority with this. Abusers lack empathy, which is teachable.

This is just another example of the erosion of the traditional family. A child’s odds of being put in a situation like this astronomically increases when they come from a broken home. I hope this tragedy can serve as an example to parents everywhere. This young child didn’t deserve to be put into this type of situation

  98. adamjac78 says: Oct 12, 2013 12:30 PM

There’s a problem, the death penalty can only be used in capital murder cases. Unfortunately this will not be tried as a murder case due to it’s lack of premeditation. He will probably get charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Vendetta wishes aside (and personally, I would like to see him set on fire while his family watches)–the real issue here is how we, as a society, do not do nearly enough to protect mothers and children in these situations. The laws are skewed right now, and as long as they remain such, this will continue to happen. I cannot imagine the suffering of this poor boy, just a baby, I think if we really thought more about that than wishing the guy is beaten and raped in prison–we might all do more to try to keep this from happening. That poor kid.

This case is tragic all around no need to pile on at this point.

In South Dakota you basically get 2 get of jail free cards. The first is called a suspended imposition whereby you can avoid serious jail time by complying with conditions of the court. The second is called a suspended execution. If you fail to comply with the conditions of the court from a suspended imposition you may still be able to avoid jail time.
Maybe those options shouldn’t be available to violent offenders.

As for the psychologist who posted these vicious psychos lack empathy, and empathy can be taught, he is half right but dead wrong too. yes, they are sociopaths who lack empathy (otherwise known as a conscience), but it CANNOT be taught. Maybe it turns out AP was a scum bucket deadbeat dad, but why don’t you wait before passing judgement? For now, the decent thing to do is offer your condolences and leave it at that. The same thing applies to the mother. You all assume she knew about this monster’s previous crime against another child. If she did, and left her poor baby alone with this monster, she should at least be charged with child endangerment and deserves every bit of our ridicule, scorn and disgust. But what if she DIDN’T know? Can you imagine how horribly devastated she is right now? My point is none of us have any clue about the circumstances of this tragedy. How could any one beat a child with an auto antenna until they died ? Patterson should be beaten to the edge of death, allowed to heal, and beaten again.
I have not seen anything about the mother and where she was during this time but she also needs some sort of punishment for leaving the child with a very angry person (or should I say a demon) that could do such a thing.
Its’ obvious that he is a coward and likes to beat women and children so now he should be beaten by prison inmates that are lifers and have nothing to lose but I envision that he will take his own life because he is a coward. A quick death is too easy for this man and it should be drawn out and made an example of for anyone that has that much hate in him. Some of the responses to this thread are awful.

    1. Fans who turn this topic back into a football topic are disgraceful. This is a discussion about the murder of an infant. Turning it into a “Go Team” post. Inappropriate.

    2. Stop blaming the mother. The mother has just lost her infant. Yes, the man she was with who did this is a terrible man. But truly one doesn’t expect their boyfriend, even if he is a jerk, to kill their infant. It’s very likely that if she believed he was a threat to do this she would have gotten him out of her life before he did.

    3. Even if one wants to blame the mother, which they shouldn’t, but is jail really necessary? If I man I was dating killed my baby jail would be irrelevant because the hell that I would live every moment for not seeing the danger, for not protecting my child etc, would be worse than anything the justice system could do.

    4. Blaming AP for not being around more. Come on. Let’s stick to the man who is the criminal here. The man who murdered the child. Focus the rage on him. He did it. He deserves what he gets. The rest of the story is truly a tragedy.

The problem is, they won’t charge this as a murder case. For capital murder there needs to be forethought/premeditation. This incident was more of a rageful instance. Any half-witted attorney could argue that it was not Patterson’s intention to kill the child. If they attempted to pursue a murder charge, they would more than likely end up with a verdict similar to the Casey Anthony trial. Not enough known evidence about premeditation.

I don’t want to hear any more Viking fans spout off about “what a wonderful man” Adrian Peterson is, or “he’s the kind of role model this world needs.”

Save it….all of it. He’s a self-centered indiscriminate baby-maker who had never met this kid until the baby was dying. He’s planning to play because Dickerson’s record is more important.

I have lost all respect for this guy. I hope the Vikings get their asses handed to them this weekend.

stellar, you’re missing the point entirely. Maybe there’s more to this story but now is not the time – a child’s life has ended as a result of this and all you can do is focus on lambasting a guy you’ve never met either. Your priorities and focus on life in general is completely messed up. And don’t preach to me about facts that other people’s kids have died from assault too and haven’t had the same amount of attention – any focus, no matter how it comes about, on an issue like this, is welcome and making the country talk about it is a good thing. Again, if you had children, you’d understand.

You know nothing about what you say, watch yourself lest you sound like an insensitive prick. AP watched his brother die in front of his eyes and got into football to deal with the pain. He also had a half-brother murdered before he participated in the Combine. AD has a history of using football to deal with pain.
You guys here criticizing him are something else, let me tell you. You obviously, none of you, have children.

Your hero-worship is clouding your judgment. I’m not insensitive to the mother. I’m not insensitive to the poor kid. He’s a young rich kid behaving irresponsibly without concerning himself with the consequences. We’ve seen him weasel his way out of other “issues” by using his celebrity status before. Get him off your pedestal. My grandchildren will appreciate it.

To those who think they have the right to judge AP: they should read: Matthew 7:1-5

AP lost his child. There is no reason to judge him now. SMH

Besides, the Justice system is terrible everywhere. The moron got a suspended sentence, likely due to overcrowding of jails and prisons thanks to mandatory prison sentences for drug offenses (thanks to Len Bias’ death, and the overreaction by the Dept of Justice at the time, under Reagan. and the Congress)

Ask yourselves something…..if you had unlimited financial resources and had learned last summer that you had fathered a child….a child that was now three years old…… wouldn’t you want to know that he was cared for? Wouldn’t you want to know who the people were in his life? Wouldn’t you want to meet the father figure affecting the well-being of your own flesh and blood? A background check perhaps….of the mother and her ” friends?” What would that have cost? A baby’s life maybe?

Or would you take a “wait-and-see” approach?

“Hey everyone, let’s wait and see how much of a problem this newfound circumstance will be for me. Maybe it will go away.”

If anyone thinks I am being too hard on AP, so be it. If it walks like a duck, smells like a duck, and quacks like a duck……it’s usually a duck.

Realistically, Patterson will not see any threat of the death penalty. Additionally, he will not see general population in any correctional facility he will live in. According to the 8th amendment he must be protected from cruel and unusual punishment. Thus in order to preserve his rights, he will be placed in segregation for most, if not all, of his time in custody.

I agree that the guy should never be allowed out of custody as his past and current history indicates that he is a threat to the defenseless. This is a tragic situation, but it is also one that plays out in almost every corner of the U.S. – though most of the children victims are never spoken of. It is sad that it takes a high profile case like this to bring the issue back to the forefront of our minds. Hopefully, this tragedy will bring about positive change.

My thoughts are with AP and his family during this time.

So can they lock up the judge who suspended his sentence for beating up a 3 year old? Sickening.

  163. cusoman says: Oct 12, 2013 5:13 PM

Stellar, along with many others here are making huge assumptions about this story without knowing all the facts. Get a freaking hold people.

One things are certain, Domestic Violence Counseling does not work. Sounds great on paper, but in the real world, it didn’t work. This story begs to ask, “What was the mother doing when this was happening-cheering him on?”

    To sandman34rt:

As a retired forensic psychologist and criminal psychologist, I know a lot about life in prison. Trust me, Patterson will be a dead man walking (if he makes it there).

  166. purpwalk says: Oct 12, 2013 5:41 PM

how stupid, there was a pattern of abuse and they didn’t do more? for one incident, maybe a person can be counseled, but not in this case, and isn’t so. dakota conservative?

I’m just happy drug offenders are in jail while people like this are on the street.

Didn’t see the post of which u speak. But I don’t belong to the tea PARTY but don’t need to to see how biased the lame stream media is. And your example of hatred and immaturity is showing by using a term for those u don’t like that you KNOW to be referencing a sexual act. Very high-brow.

Suspended sentence for beating a woman and a 3 year old yet, we have mandatory sentences for drugs. Seems reasonable.

  171. cdv21 says: Oct 12, 2013 10:11 PM

Just like our gov’t, our legal system is a joke…the judge that let him off should pay too.

  172. Jizmaglobin says: Oct 14, 2013 2:45 AM

The real joke regarding our so called justice system is that he was given a suspended sentence because the system is already full of people sentenced on only drug crimes. People go to prison all the time for doing nothing wrong but for having an illegal drug in their possession. People who work, pay taxes, and otherwise break no laws go to prison for getting high on un-government-sanctioned drugs instead of the ones the government does sanction. If you don’t do the drugs they’re pushing you get locked up. When you do they have to let violent offenders off easy because there’s no more room for them. And this makes sense to who?

  173. frellmedead7 says: Oct 14, 2013 6:03 PM

Wow. Hope that judge is feeling good about him/herself. What a pathetic excuse and a disgrace for an officer of the court.

And this needs to be said: Too often, mothers and fathers are too quick to invite someone into their children’s lives because they just have to have a man, or they have to have a woman. They are putting their children’s lives in danger.

Am I saying that the mother of this baby deserves some blame? Well, that depends. Was she aware that this piece of excrement was convicted of child abuse and domestic abuse previously? Was there prior incidents involving this “man” and her son, and she ignored the signs? If so, then my answer is an unequivocal and resounding “YES.”

  174. sb139422 says: Oct 15, 2013 4:02 PM

S.D. is a death penalty state. give him the chair. There’s no excuse for beating a 2 year old. None. No anger, no insanity, no she was cheating on me. There’s no hot blooded beating of a 2 year old. He deserves to die (Obviously if he is guilty).
