Man accused of killing Peterson’s son was previously charged with abusing a 3-year-old

AP

The man accused in the beating death of Adrian Peterson’s 2-year-old son had previously been accused of abusing a 3-year-old.

The Argus Leader reports that Joseph Robert Patterson had previously been given a suspended sentence on two domestic abuse cases, one involving an assault on a woman he was previously involved with, and another involving an assault on that woman’s child.

Patterson was given a one-year jail term for each of those two charges, but the jail time was suspended on the condition he attend domestic violence counseling.

Now Patterson is charged with aggravated assault on an infant in the beating of Peterson’s son. Additional charges are possible now that Peterson’s son has died.

  1. it’s being reported that Adrian didn’t meet his son until he was on life support at the hospital. so, it makes sense why he is still playing Sunday. RIP to the little guy though, his murderer deserves the worst kind of punishment.

  2. Additional charges are possible now that Peterson’s son has died.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Maybe it’s just me, but I would like to think a charge of murder would be a certainty.
    This isn’t like a tragic death of a child as a result of an accident or even questionable negligence. This was a beating. This guy should never be let out of prison. My preference would be a death sentence of something viewed as cruel and unusual
  3. Death would be too easy a reprieve for him. I’m not even sure what would be a suitable fate for him.
    All I know is there is a special place in Hell waiting for him.
  4. Two Words: Death Sentence.
    There is no way that a piece of crap of a man should live when he can’t take care of our future but rather beats on the weak.
  6. really wearethesteelers??? usually i could give a crap about the steelers & their fans; but do you have to post on this story talk about classless.
  7. As a pregame surprise this coward should be dropped off in middle of Vikings lockeroom doors shut and locked , and when players take the field whatever is left can go in dumpster behind stadium!
    He can beat on women and children lets see how he does against men?
    10-2 run starting Sunday. Mark these words.
    What the hell are you talking about….a man loses hisa 2 yr old & you are rambling about your 0-4 crap team…..Jesus, keep your eye on the ball…..moron
  9. This POS should’ve been locked away the first time but like usual, as our justice system works, he just got a slap on the wrist and a time out. Hope he walks funny every day in prison.
  10. I’d like to know how the judge in the 1st case managed to give him a “suspended” sentence to begin with? What, the abuse wasn’t “that bad”? This ahole should have been locked up since then. Say what we want to say about some of these Muslim countries but that eye-for-an-eye justice make so much sense in cases like this.
  11. man, Ive read all the comments. Do you people ever read what you’ve written before you post it? Steelers fans–not the right place for go steelers go. I agree, but post it on a football page, not here.Asw for the jerk who cvlaims “it was reported” that AP never met his child before this, you sound like FOX not facts “news”. What is your source? Even if that were true, it doesn’t mean AP is not affected. lots of lowlife “mothers” (and I think this one would qualify, yes?) are either too vindictive or indifferent to allow biological fathers access to their children, or are even told its their child…lets not “RUSH”(pun intended) to judgment on the NFL’s top Rusher…anyways, my heart goes out to all who are grieving this little babys loss, and hope they find comfort in the fact that he is, for eternity, in the arms and loving care of his Father…
  12. Not to take anything away from the monster this scum is, but what the F was Peterson’s baby mama (did I say this right?) thinking dating this low life? Broken family units are a damn shame.
  13. As the parent of a 13, 5 and 2 year old. I’m pretty positive I would consider swallowing a bullet if God forbid one of my babies was taken from me. AP is a hell of a man to be able to play, much less talk about it. God Bless AP and his family. If my kids turn out to be an 1/8 th of the human being he is I’ll be proud. Much respect, love and prayers sent to you AP.
  14. This angels life is the real cost of our ‘Catch and Release’ policies. The names of the judge and parole board members who released this devil should be published. They should be held accountable for deciding that the life of this angel was an acceptable risk needed to save incarceration expenses. The cops and prosecutor did their job, let the others explain to all of us why this devil was set free to kill this baby.
  15. A liberalized justice system is why this was allowed to happen. People get a slap on the wrist for predatory abuses for far too long. But, hey, you can face prison after assaulting children and women 4 times, but don’t dare get 3 drunk drivings over your lifetime. 4th offence battery of a woman or child will land you in prison for 2 years in my state. 3rd offense drunk driving gets a person 5 years. Yep, our justice system is right on when alcoholism is a greater crime than selling meth to kids or beating your wife.
    Anyway, this guy beats to death a 2 year old baby. That should warrant a death penalty. Most states no longer use that penalty because they say it is not a deterrent (thanks again, liberals). Well, it will deter the same person from doing it again after they get out of prison. That is reason enough to kill killers, especially the predatory types like the piece of trash in this article.
    This week everyone should te a Vikings fan or at the very least cheer for Peterson.
    ******************************************
    Yeah, because then this poor childs death won’t have been in vain.
    Sometimes my own fan base absolutely disgusts me.
  17. The poor child again is the victim because of bad, irresponsible (both massive understatements) of adults. AP leads the way here…
    AP is a sperm donor, not a father. Real father’s raise their children. They just don’t impregnate and run.
    The women clearly was a rotten Mom as well. How in the world do you end up with a guy like Joseph Robert Patterson given his history? How do you not run as far away as possible when he abuses you and your son? I am assuming that this isn’t the first time.
    Again, where is AP in this situation? Big bad AP is a big, bad, physical beast, but is no protector of his son?
    Joseph Robert Patterson earned a bullet, period. No reason to elaborate.
    Bottom line is that this little boy did not have to die if AP was a real man and was a father to his son. If he is, JRP can never have an opportunity to hurt his son.
    Strange to me that society has become to accepting of this sort “pop and run” mentality. What is the illegitimacy birth rate in the AA community? Something like 70%? If men would just father their children instead of running away like cowards this world would be a better place.
  18. oh yeah, and as for the killer–Regina Belle is right (all the evidence is sound…what goes around comes around…) There are a lot of bad criminals in prison who may have done bad things/crtimes, but they always managed to be good fathers…lets hope he winds up in their midst…as for the mother, she should be charged at the very least with child neglect and endangerment, if she left her baby in that monsters “care”. Or even allowed him access to him. Obvously, she did one of the other, probably both.
    —————
    NOOO!
    Dump him midfield so we can witness a kick OFF turned into a kicking CONTEST.
  20. Umm how can someone not get jail time for abusing a kid? That is such a despicable crime that punishing/rehabilitating him with counseling is basically sending the message that there is little consequence…and the mother should have ceased contact after that first incident.
  21. Well, do you think Patterson will get a suspended sentence?? I don’t think so either. I can’t help but wonder if the legal “system” did what they were suppose to do and sentenced Patterson to prison, that that would have prevented him from meeting the boy’s mother and the boy would still be alive today.
  22. Suspended sentence for a guy who beats a three year old hard enough to cause welts. Meanwhile, the South Dakota prison system probably had quite a few guys in jail for relatively minor property crimes where no one was physically injured.
    Therapy as a sentence is useless. You either understand you need help and go looking for it, or you choose not to do so. Throw this (insert appropriate inappropriate word here) into prison, make his life a living hell the FIRST time he beats a child, and maybe he’ll come to the conclusion that he needs to modify his behavior and will actually seek help, instead of having the help become part of his punishment.
  23. Can we say justice totally failed since he’d done it TWICE already and, oh, that’s ok, we’ll just let him walk the streets if he attends some meetings!
    Effing seriously?!? Beats a woman and a kid, and he’s still out there to beat and kill another kid…
    That judge that let him walk outside the first time should be fired!
  24. I agree with a couple other posters here about the mother doing time.
    Someone capable of that must have demonstrated abusive behavior toward the poor, defenseless little angel in her presence.
    What scum. The 2 of them.
  25. Horrible situation. More will come out but nfl guys clearly need to be more involved with their children and parenting training might need to be added to the rookie symposium. How does a kid of a millionaire even come in contact with such a lowlife? Praying for those suffering.
  26. This dude is a dead man walking once he gets to prison. Hardened criminals in prison don’t think highly of child beaters/molesters.
    This is also a perfect example of what stayed sentences, suspended sentences, appealed sentences get you……..continued negative behavior. I wish Goodell and the NFL would come to grips with this when they keep giving certain players chance after chance. From all appearances, Johnny Jolly finally learned a lesson and has cleaned up his act after spending some time out of the NFL and in prison…..good for him. I am all for giving players a second chance but when they keep repeating the same dirty cheating tactics and know they can appeal appeal appeal and have their fines/suspensions overturned, then you cannot expect them to change their ways.
  27. How’d that counseling work out? Any “man” that can beat a woman or child should have the damn book thrown at them. This loser should have a death sentence thrown at him.
  28. It doesn’t matter whether he met his son that day or not. Other reports also said that he had been treating the boy as if he were his son even before they did the paternity test to confirm it. That’s not the issue here.
  29. What a great justice system we have. Don’t look him up until he kills a baby. Give me a break this guy already beat a baby before. Why in the hell was he free.
  30. If Judges salaries and careers were somehow tied to their decisions, I bet we wouldn’t see too many more suspended sentences. Our prisons are overflowing with non-violent criminals but the violent one’s get off the hook. Makes sense to me.
  31. Hey Ravendork…
    Not the place for you to be inserting your idiotic, liberal, hateful, uninformed MSNBC-LIKE Anti-conservative views in a lame attempt to take a swipe at news orgs you dont like because they expose your bias…..
  32. How does assault on a woman and her three year old net NO jail time? He would have been worse off getting caught with a joint in most states.
  33. I love how everyone knows how prison life goes. he’s gonna get this, he’s gonna get that. You have no clue, either do I, thank god. Seems like to much tv and movies for you people.
    As much as I wish it was true, prison justice is not real. Maybe if he killed a gang member other gang members will retaliate.
    But to think there is some sort of inmate justice system for child hurters seems silly.
  34. If this guy had money, mom of the year would be right by his side saying “I still love him”
    Now she’ll just try to get another lottery ticket from a rich guy.
  35. It’s a special type of sick that hurts a child.
    Those individuals get no sympathy for me for any thing that happens to them.
  36. “Regina Belle is right (all the evidence is sound…what goes around comes around…) There are a lot of bad criminals in prison who may have done bad things/crtimes, but they always managed to be good fathers…”
    If you are in prison, you are not a good father, case closed.
  37. Good thing this guy was only in jail for a year for his previous offenses…why do criminals like this continue to get out? Does this type of action not warrant death penalty consideration?
  38. “I don’t believe in Hell.”
    Hell’s not afraid is you don’t believe in it farvite. The enemy laughs and rejoices in that you don’t. I take no joy in that because you don’t makes it any less real. I don’t believe in football but come Sunday a lot of people will be watching my non-belief. See my point? It’s still real in spite of “your belief in it”. What you have sir is denial of truth. God bless.
  39. @Patiots42 and the rest of you chastising NFL players in general and AP in particular for not being involved, impregnating then abandoning countless women, not taking care of or being a father to, their kids, not paying child support, etc. SHAME on you all–this is not the place or the time for this type of, at best, unproven unsubstantiated crap. Patriots guy, don’t be casting stones–ever hear of Aaron Hernandez
  40. “How do you go from dating Adrian Peterson to this waste of space?”
    you act like NFl player are all upstanding citizens? just because you have money doesn’t make you a good person. She’s obviosly trash and goes out with trash as well. She was a 1 night stand for Adrian, he couldn’t careless about her.
  41. This is just like Herandez.
    Maybe these bleeding-heart judges shouldn’t have let him walk the first time (which I suspect wasn’t his first time in some kind of trouble).
    When will we learn?
    And if Peterson’s girl-friend knew his past, she is partially responsible for not protecting her son by leaving him with this monster.
    When will these women (and some men) learn?
    ==============================================================
    Some women don’t ever tell the guy (in this case AP) that she was knocked up. The stories i have been reading. AP had just found out that he was the father.
    Until you are told you have a child sense you are not the one with something growing inside of you. I can NOT say he was just a “sperm donor” . You even said yourself she was a”rotten mom”.
    Clearly AP and the mom had at least 1 sexual encounter. she got knocked up. How they met or how it all happened has not been told yet. Do not fill in the blanks that you clearly have zero knowledge about. Why do you put AP under the bus by saying he knew for years that he had a kid with her.
    Your statements here should clearly disqualify you from being on any jury. For being just plain STUPID!!!!
  52. Why doesn’t Adrian’s child live at home with him? It seems he would’ve been offered better protection if he had two parents
    Just keep spitting out the kids people. Great society we have
  53. keylimelight–really? its human nature to “vent” anger and anguish over something as unfair as the brutal taking of an innocent little child’s life by a vicious grown adult. This pretty-nearly-universal reaction is surely not “just as sick” as what that monster did to that poor baby.
    There is a special place in hell for child and animal abusers.
  54. This guy was given a light sentence initially only because of liberal policies…libs think monsters like this can be “educated” and “reformed”…it will continue to happen if we allow liberal judges and lawyers to rule our court system.
  55. The problem is that jail/prison is not a true deterrent. I work professionally as a psychotherapist with offenders of all types from murders to child molesters/abusers to addicts. As well as abuse and trauma victims. Incarceration is a minimal deterrent because overcrowding and decreased funding. There are many individuals who re-offend simply because the fear of jail/prison time isn’t enough. Unfortunately most offenders view it the same way children view a time-out. The proper services to decrease recidivism are dwindling due to budget cuts and the lack of belief that counseling services can change individuals.
    By no means do I condone what happened to this poor child, but the system is so overloaded with similar cases. There is no way to handle either the criminal population nor the population of abused children without increasing funding to both. The problem remains that society doesn’t want to have their taxes increased to pay for services that don’t directly effect them. Society wants things taken care of, but doesn’t want to pay for it. I think increased funding for both is necessary if there are any changes to be made. Unfortunately I’m in the minority with this. Abusers lack empathy, which is teachable.
  56. This is just another example of the erosion of the traditional family. A child’s odds of being put in a situation like this astronomically increases when they come from a broken home. I hope this tragedy can serve as an example to parents everywhere. This young child didn’t deserve to be put into this type of situation
  57. @John A.
    There’s a problem, the death penalty can only be used in capital murder cases. Unfortunately this will not be tried as a murder case due to it’s lack of premeditation. He will probably get charged with involuntary manslaughter.
  58. Vendetta wishes aside (and personally, I would like to see him set on fire while his family watches)–the real issue here is how we, as a society, do not do nearly enough to protect mothers and children in these situations. The laws are skewed right now, and as long as they remain such, this will continue to happen. I cannot imagine the suffering of this poor boy, just a baby, I think if we really thought more about that than wishing the guy is beaten and raped in prison–we might all do more to try to keep this from happening. That poor kid.
    Uhhhm. Just yesterday they had a picture of AP kissing his little Angel on the field at a game on PFT or NFL.com can’t remember!!! So please, no slanderous insensitive accusations or comments necessary!!!! I know that the media loves to portray African American males as deadbeats but that characterization is grossly exaggerated. Whoever “reported” that notion needs to take a real good luck in the mirror and ask themselves do they like what they see. Epitome of wreckless irresponsible journalism!!!
  60. Not to sound macho, but this tough guy needs to be taken out to the woodshed for a full scale beatdown so he understands what it feels like.
  61. Wow, lot of people jumping on AD here as a bad parent.
    The reports I have seen indicate that the mother thought that another man was the father and very recently found out this was not the case when the DNA came back negative. She THEN alerted Adrian of the child and he promptly took a DNA test which was positive at which time he began planning a trip to meet the kid.
    This case is tragic all around no need to pile on at this point.
  62. “How do you go from dating Adrian Peterson to this waste of space?”
    Who said anything about dating? It is far more likely that a few too many drinks lead to a slam-bam-thank you mam.
    Either way, her own 2 year old son is dead because of a choice she made in dating the wrong guy. That’s something that she will have to live with the rest of her life.
    So you do the same thing?
  64. Not a single mention of his mental health. I’m not a doctor, but this man clearly seems to be not normal. There is almost no back story on this guy but hopefully somebody will unearth the real tragedy here. Perhaps undiagnosed and untreated mental disorder. This is a growing problem in America and one that our country is going to have to face up to eventually.
  65. In South Dakota you basically get 2 get of jail free cards. The first is called a suspended imposition whereby you can avoid serious jail time by complying with conditions of the court. The second is called a suspended execution. If you fail to comply with the conditions of the court from a suspended imposition you may still be able to avoid jail time.
    Maybe those options shouldn’t be available to violent offenders.
  66. hey steelersfanfromtheseventies–are you hobnestly self-deluded enough to think “wearethesteelers” with his comments “go steelers gho,here we go, mark my words steelers will be 10-2 from now on” etc, is actually a Ravens fan who took the time to set this all up a long time ago by making his username “wearethesteelers” who are the Ravens biggest Rivals (well, mayber 49ers as well). but come on now….I agree with all of you who are steelers fans buty don’t like his comments posted here becaquse of the tragedy subject. But come on, don’t try to blame steelersfans comments on Ravbens. I believe all of us are angry and anguished over this vbicius brutal killing of a defenseless little boy. Lets direct our anguish and anger, not towards each other, but towards the psycho who did this and the “mother” who, at best,allowed him to kill her baby, and maybe even helped, who knows?
    As for the psychologist who posted these vicious psychos lack empathy, and empathy can be taught, he is half right but dead wrong too. yes, they are sociopaths who lack empathy (otherwise known as a conscience), but it CANNOT be taught. Sorry, wish it could, but research and history says it cannot. All the therapy in the world cant teach someone to care about others. That’s why the recitivism rate is so high…
  67. I really think when stuff like this happens the father and mother or who ever the guardian is should be able to beat them almost to death and then have the honor to do the injection!!!!
  68. Did I miss the news report stating Adrian Peterson was a deadbeat dad? Nope, because there hasn’t been one. Very few facts are known at this time. So why are some of you assuming the worst? Maybe it turns out AP was a scum bucket deadbeat dad, but why don’t you wait before passing judgement? For now, the decent thing to do is offer your condolences and leave it at that. The same thing applies to the mother. You all assume she knew about this monster’s previous crime against another child. If she did, and left her poor baby alone with this monster, she should at least be charged with child endangerment and deserves every bit of our ridicule, scorn and disgust. But what if she DIDN’T know? Can you imagine how horribly devastated she is right now? My point is none of us have any clue about the circumstances of this tragedy. The only certainty is that a 2 year old boy lost his life when he was left alone with a chickensh%# piece of @$%# monster who doesn’t deserve to live.
  69. What use does society have for people like this? If you are not going to use them for medical testing stop wasting public money on a trial and hang him today.
  70. Uhhhm. Just yesterday they had a picture of AP kissing his little Angel on the field at a game on PFT or NFL.com can’t remember!!!
    =================================
    That child is AP, Jr., a different kid from a different mother, per AP’s Twitter feed…
  71. Any negligence charges for the mother of this boy? Who could have that kind of loser around her son with those prior charges?
  72. How could any one beat a child with an auto antenna until they died ? Patterson should be beaten to the edge of death, allowed to heal, and beaten again.
    I have not seen anything about the mother and where she was during this time but she also needs some sort of punishment for leaving the child with a very angry person (or should I say a demon) that could do such a thing.
    Its’ obvious that he is a coward and likes to beat women and children so now he should be beaten by prison inmates that are lifers and have nothing to lose but I envision that he will take his own life because he is a coward. A quick death is too easy for this man and it should be drawn out and made an example of for anyone that has that much hate in him. I really hope he never makes it to court and anyone that defends this dude should be beat also.
  73. Sorry for Adrian, even if he just found out he;s the dad still got to be devastating. Also feel the mom should have some blame in this whole deal but for all you guys saying she should never have left him alone with the kid, dated the guy, etc. How many of you have ever actually ran a background check on a perspective “night of passion” for lack of a better term.. I can just see it now, “yeah baby lets go to my place.” OK, but I’ll be right back, by the way what’s your DOB & SS#?”
    Regardless of the circumstances I sure am sorry for the poor little guy . He was just home with some guy his mom left him with and now he’s dead. It’s a sorry world we live in today.
  74. “@sandman–why does being a prisoner or even a criminal doesn’t automatically make one a bad parent? Even good people make bad mistakes, or do bad things sometimes. Case closed? what makes YOU the expert?”
    Umm what? when you abandon your kids because you’re getting locked up……….news flash, YOU’RE A BAD PARENT. Are there exceptions, sure. Maybe dad was saving him kid and got locked up for some dumb reason. 99/100 that is not the case. Do good people make mistakes, sure. but mistakes have consequences, like jail time, and being called a bad parent, which you are, if you’re going to prison when you have a family. Maybe when you get out you can rebound and become a good parent. use your head, it’s not that hard to understand.
  75. I’ll never in my life understand why women go for men with criminal histories. She left this baby with a monster.
    Not saying she is to blame…but she knew who this guy was.
    This to me is a gigantic problem in our society: women who date terrible, terrible men.
  76. Some of the responses to this thread are awful.
    1. Fans who turn this topic back into a football topic are disgraceful. This is a discussion about the murder of an infant. Turning it into a “Go Team” post. Inappropriate.
    2. Stop blaming the mother. The mother has just lost her infant. Yes, the man she was with who did this is a terrible man. But truly one doesn’t expect their boyfriend, even if he is a jerk, to kill their infant. It’s very likely that if she believed he was a threat to do this she would have gotten him out of her life before he did.
    3. Even if one wants to blame the mother, which they shouldn’t, but is jail really necessary? If I man I was dating killed my baby jail would be irrelevant because the hell that I would live every moment for not seeing the danger, for not protecting my child etc, would be worse than anything the justice system could do.
    4. Blaming AP for not being around more. Come on. Let’s stick to the man who is the criminal here. The man who murdered the child. Focus the rage on him. He did it. He deserves what he gets. The rest of the story is truly a tragedy.
  77. “His EX should be in jail too. Absolutely unbelievable. As a father who has lost a child, I am so gut wrenching sorry for this man. I can totally feel his pain.”
    What pain? He doesn’t care about this kid, never did, never will. He may get a tattoo but that’s about it.
  78. @ adamjac…not sure how it is in South (North?) Dakota, but Texas has a law that when Pieces of Dog Sh%# murder children or the elderly they are eligible for the death penalty. (Does this state have the death penalty?) Prosecutors will probably point to his established pattern of assaulting children and charge him with murder. Because of his history, I would think it makes a claim of no pre-meditation a little less believable. Of course, I am not an attorney so I’m just speculating. I certainly hope he gets the maximum sentence allowed by law. Of course, if he gets beaten to death by inmates it would be poetic justice
  79. Obviously the counselling he had never did any good. Just lock him up for good and leave him there.
    He shouldn’t be on this earth, he worthless.
  80. What judge suspends a child abuse case? And these desperate brawds better start doin background checks on mfs they shakin up with
  81. “2ruefan says:Oct 12, 2013 11:35 AM
    Hey Ravendork…
    Not the place for you to be inserting your idiotic, liberal, hateful, uninformed MSNBC-LIKE Anti-conservative views in a lame attempt to take a swipe at news orgs you dont like because they expose your bias…..”
    ========================================
    So @2ruefan, so would you say the same thing to @mediacowards, or would you ignore him because he shares your same T-Bagger views?
  82. Two simple questions:
    If this guy abused kids, why was he around the little boy? And
    Why wasn’t he with AP away from a mother unwilling to keep a boyfriend willing to kill her kid out of the house?
    Here we go Steelers, here we go!
    10-2 run starting Sunday. Mark these words.
    What the hell are you talking about….a man loses hisa 2 yr old & you are rambling about your 0-4 crap team…..Jesus, keep your eye on the ball…..moron
    This guy is no steelers fan.He is a ravens troll that is a complete idiot.
    ==========================
    ..and he’s been doing this here for years now, under an ever-changing variety of names.
    you’d think people would recognize a troll when they see one… especially one as obvious at this.
  84. It ceases to amaze me how often these people that mistreat children are let out again into the public.
    Keep these molesters in jail is the safest way for the rest of us.
    I have got to wonder why AP’s girlfriend or ex-girlfriend would allow a guy with priors to be near her son, she should face charges for endangering a child.
  85. As a retired CO I can promise that he is not long for this world once he arrives in genpop. And a lot of people will be looking the other way. And for all you saying he got time but it was suspended if he got counseling. THAT MEANS HE DID NO JAIL TIME. That’s the bottom line. Assault on a child should not ever be dealt with with a sit down with some shrink. Of course if the mother was aware of these convictions and still was with him then she may not be legally responsible but she is morally responsible.
  86. This patterson scum should get the treatment Uncle Jack and his boys gave Jesse on breaking bad. Beat the piss out of him daily, and keep him shackled in a pit somewhere. Oh, but no Ben & Jerry’s.
  87. One thing bothers me about this, his father had to clarify that it was APs son but not Adrian Jr. As if this child is less important somehow. And he was back at practice on Friday? I have a son, nothing could keep me away if he was fighting for his life. Maybe I’m reading into this but this strikes me as odd.
    The problem is, they won’t charge this as a murder case. For capital murder there needs to be forethought/premeditation. This incident was more of a rageful instance. Any half-witted attorney could argue that it was not Patterson’s intention to kill the child. If they attempted to pursue a murder charge, they would more than likely end up with a verdict similar to the Casey Anthony trial. Not enough known evidence about premeditation.
  89. She didn’t know the history on this POS before moving in with him? I’m sure she was getting child support from Adrian why not get a house of your own. Women google these fools do background checks know who you are allowing near your children.
  90. If AP’s father is still in prison, they should incarcerate this guy in the same prison. Let Grandpappy Peterson get some justice for his grandson.
  91. The product of a liberal society, he should have gotten 10 years with anger management, not suspended for anger management. Yet the cause that is important is the name of a football team?
    PRIORITIES PLEASE
  92. This is what happens when you have “baby mommas” instead of taking care of your kids.
    Sorry – but is there ANY parent out there reading this that would go to work, after your child dies?
    I mean MAYBE if your family is broke & really MUST have money. I dont know AD & I know its not right to comment on his life that i know nothing about.
    But, how do you have a kid with someone and not know who is around the kid.
    I get that all parents are different and most people do what they feel is best for their kids & dont care what other parents do.
    But, I can say with 100% certainty that IF my old lady & i split up – i would investigate ANY man she started dating. (I know she would not bring anyone around our kids without knowing him for a long time)
    there is a very obvious disconnect with AD & this child.
  93. I have just been looking at my 2 year old son a whole lot more the past couple days. Just thinking how could someone, or something harm a child like this? Its already know between my lady and I if we break up my son is with me
  94. How in the world . Did this guy NOT get no jail time on the first offence ? The jail time was suspended on the condition he attend domestic violence counseling. Are you kidding me , the judge who let this guy get off scott free needs to lose their job. Child abuse is suppose to be one of the #1 crimes we try to stop. Its happening way 2 often. Makes me sick .
  95. Inmates need to form a line and none of them use any kind of lubricant then after all that if he’s still alive, Hang him by his sack and let inmates use him as a punching bag. Make this guy suffer on earth before he burns in hell for eternity.
    Scum doesn’t deserve human rights.
  96. It’s nice to believe that “the inmates will take care of things,” but plenty of scumbags go into prison and never have a problem because they know the “right” (wrong) people inside.
  97. I am very sick. This story has made me very mad and sick. If this man wants to kill the young than i know a place that he can live in peace (sarcasm). ITS CALLED HELL.
  98. Peterson is more interested in Dickerson’s rushing record than this kid. How could anyone plan to play after something like this? To honor the child? Please!
  99. We can’t all be quick to rush and judge without knowing the situation or circumstances here.
    From the comments I’ve seen so far regarding child support from AP.. I wonder what happened with the money that she’s getting from an NFL player with a lucrative multi-million dollar contract fulfilling his obligations – where she has to leave the kid with this monster and not at a daycare.
    You know nothing about what you say, watch yourself lest you sound like an insensitive prick. AP watched his brother die in front of his eyes and got into football to deal with the pain. He also had a half-brother murdered before he participated in the Combine. AD has a history of using football to deal with pain.
    You guys here criticizing him are something else, let me tell you. You obviously, none of you, have children.
  101. I don’t want to hear any more Viking fans spout off about “what a wonderful man” Adrian Peterson is, or “he’s the kind of role model this world needs.”
    Save it….all of it. He’s a self-centered indiscriminate baby-maker who had never met this kid until the baby was dying. He’s planning to play because Dickerson’s record is more important.
    I have lost all respect for this guy. I hope the Vikings get their asses handed to them this weekend.
  102. stellar, you’re missing the point entirely. Maybe there’s more to this story but now is not the time – a child’s life has ended as a result of this and all you can do is focus on lambasting a guy you’ve never met either. Your priorities and focus on life in general is completely messed up. And don’t preach to me about facts that other people’s kids have died from assault too and haven’t had the same amount of attention – any focus, no matter how it comes about, on an issue like this, is welcome and making the country talk about it is a good thing. Again, if you had children, you’d understand.
    Your hero-worship is clouding your judgment. I’m not insensitive to the mother. I’m not insensitive to the poor kid. He’s a young rich kid behaving irresponsibly without concerning himself with the consequences. We’ve seen him weasel his way out of other “issues” by using his celebrity status before. Get him off your pedestal. My grandchildren will appreciate it.
  104. To those who think they have the right to judge AP: they should read: Matthew 7:1-5
    AP lost his child. There is no reason to judge him now. SMH
    Besides, the Justice system is terrible everywhere. The moron got a suspended sentence, likely due to overcrowding of jails and prisons thanks to mandatory prison sentences for drug offenses (thanks to Len Bias’ death, and the overreaction by the Dept of Justice at the time, under Reagan. and the Congress)
  105. Ask yourselves something…..if you had unlimited financial resources and had learned last summer that you had fathered a child….a child that was now three years old…… wouldn’t you want to know that he was cared for? Wouldn’t you want to know who the people were in his life? Wouldn’t you want to meet the father figure affecting the well-being of your own flesh and blood? A background check perhaps….of the mother and her ” friends?” What would that have cost? A baby’s life maybe?
    Or would you take a “wait-and-see” approach?
    “Hey everyone, let’s wait and see how much of a problem this newfound circumstance will be for me. Maybe it will go away.”
    If anyone thinks I am being too hard on AP, so be it. If it walks like a duck, smells like a duck, and quacks like a duck……it’s usually a duck.
  106. Realistically, Patterson will not see any threat of the death penalty. Additionally, he will not see general population in any correctional facility he will live in. According to the 8th amendment he must be protected from cruel and unusual punishment. Thus in order to preserve his rights, he will be placed in segregation for most, if not all, of his time in custody.
    I agree that the guy should never be allowed out of custody as his past and current history indicates that he is a threat to the defenseless. This is a tragic situation, but it is also one that plays out in almost every corner of the U.S. – though most of the children victims are never spoken of. It is sad that it takes a high profile case like this to bring the issue back to the forefront of our minds. Hopefully, this tragedy will bring about positive change.
    My thoughts are with AP and his family during this time.
  107. Stellar, along with many others here are making huge assumptions about this story without knowing all the facts. Get a freaking hold people.
  108. One things are certain, Domestic Violence Counseling does not work. Sounds great on paper, but in the real world, it didn’t work. This story begs to ask, “What was the mother doing when this was happening-cheering him on?”
  109. To sandman34rt:
    As a retired forensic psychologist and criminal psychologist, I know a lot about life in prison. Trust me, Patterson will be a dead man walking (if he makes it there).
  110. how stupid, there was a pattern of abuse and they didn’t do more? for one incident, maybe a person can be counseled, but not in this case, and isn’t so. dakota conservative?
  111. think this scum should be tortured with no trial? me too. think about that the next time you go and vote.
  112. Granadafan
    Didn’t see the post of which u speak. But I don’t belong to the tea PARTY but don’t need to to see how biased the lame stream media is. And your example of hatred and immaturity is showing by using a term for those u don’t like that you KNOW to be referencing a sexual act. Very high-brow.
  113. Suspended sentence for beating a woman and a 3 year old yet, we have mandatory sentences for drugs. Seems reasonable.
  114. The real joke regarding our so called justice system is that he was given a suspended sentence because the system is already full of people sentenced on only drug crimes. People go to prison all the time for doing nothing wrong but for having an illegal drug in their possession. People who work, pay taxes, and otherwise break no laws go to prison for getting high on un-government-sanctioned drugs instead of the ones the government does sanction. If you don’t do the drugs they’re pushing you get locked up. When you do they have to let violent offenders off easy because there’s no more room for them. And this makes sense to who?
  115. Wow. Hope that judge is feeling good about him/herself. What a pathetic excuse and a disgrace for an officer of the court.
    And this needs to be said: Too often, mothers and fathers are too quick to invite someone into their children’s lives because they just have to have a man, or they have to have a woman. They are putting their children’s lives in danger.
    Am I saying that the mother of this baby deserves some blame? Well, that depends. Was she aware that this piece of excrement was convicted of child abuse and domestic abuse previously? Was there prior incidents involving this “man” and her son, and she ignored the signs? If so, then my answer is an unequivocal and resounding “YES.”
  116. S.D. is a death penalty state. give him the chair. There’s no excuse for beating a 2 year old. None. No anger, no insanity, no she was cheating on me. There’s no hot blooded beating of a 2 year old. He deserves to die (Obviously if he is guilty).
