Defense starts, offense finishes Packers’ win at Baltimore

Green Bay Packers v Baltimore Ravens Getty Images

As closers go, it’s hard to beat Aaron Rodgers.

And it appears the Packers have a rookie running back who could aid their finishing efforts for years to come.

After the Ravens had narrowed the Packers’ lead to 19-17 with a little more than two minutes left, Rodgers and first-year running back Eddie Lacy helped Green Bay run out the clock and secure victory Sunday at Baltimore.

First, Rodgers hit tight end Jermichael Finley for a 52-yard completion on 3rd-and-3. Then, Lacy did the rest, getting the game’s final first down on a four-yard gain and smartly sliding down with the new round of downs secure and Baltimore having no more timeouts. Rodgers would kneel twice, and the Packers had their third win of the season.

However, in victory, the Packers lost wide receivers James Jones and Randall Cobb to leg injuries. Still, the Packers did enough on offense to win. Rodgers threw for 315 yards, with 199 coming after halftime, when Jones and Cobb were out of the game.

The Ravens’ offense struggled for much of the game, but it did perk up in the fourth quarter. Trailing 19-10 and facing a 4th-and-21 at the Baltimore 19 with less than three minutes left, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco found Tandon Doss for 63 yards. Then, on the next play, Flacco connected with tight end Dallas Clark, who made a nice one-handed 18-yard TD catch to draw Baltimore within 19-17.

However, the Ravens didn’t have much margin for error on defense with just 2:04 left, and the Packers made the necessary plays to win.

The Packers’ defense held the Ravens without points for more than 40 minutes of regulation, with a second-quarter goal-line stand against Baltimore a major play in the game. The Packers also earned three unexpected points at the end of the first half when Joe Flacco fumbled on a sack and the Packers’ Datone Jones recovered, setting up a field goal as the quarter came to a close.

Now 3-2, the Packers are a half-game out of first place in the NFC North behind Chicago and Detroit, who are both 4-2. The Ravens, meanwhile, fell to 3-3. They are a game behind Cincinnati in the AFC North.

Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to your opponent. The Ravens didn’t lose this game, the Packers won it. Harbaugh’s game management, bad run defense, bad offensive play calling, Flacco being nowhere near as good as his numbers today would indicate, and having no run game were contributors to the loss. The Packers having a balanced offense, coming up with the big TD, and smacking the Ravens around on defense and running the ball all day were contributors to the win. The Packers were the better team.

After six games of win one/ lose one I think we know that the Ravens are definitely not one of the AFC big boys. They might be better later on, but this is a completely average team.

Dom needs to keep his foot on the gas pedal in the 4th qt. It’s annoying, cause our defense kicks butt for 3 qts just to have the yards inflated in the 4th cause our stupid 3 man rush-everyone dropback and stand there play didn’t do anything…again.

Just a gut feeling Randall Cobb is done for this season. James Jones might be back as early as next Sunday.

This is best defense the Packers have had in quite some time because of the mass in the front 7. It will only get better once they get Casey Hayward back in the secondary. And this is best running game the Packers have had in so long – Eddie Lacey a 2nd rd steal.

So Ted should give up a precious draft choice for Josh Gordon. With his speed he would become a star with Rodgers throwing him the ball, no 1 throws a better deep ball.

Going into the home of the defending SB Champs, losing two starting WRs, and somehow grinding out a win. Y’know, just your typical “soft team” performance.
Not sure who was wearing AJ Hawk’s uniform today, but I hope he sticks around.
For a “fat, soft” guy, Eddie Lacy is pretty good.
Really admire the Pack for the guts they’re showing. Tremendous effort; proud of ‘em.

Packers show lots of guts in a big must win. TT Should trade for WR Josh Gordon if Cobb and Jones are out for a long period of time. Paclers should sign Richard Seymour as a 3rd down & situation pass rush specialist ala Charles Haley. All the haters wanted them to collapse and lose . EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT. GO PACK GO !

Missing Clay Matthews James Jones and Randall Cobb for much of the day the Packer take down the defending champs. Good work men.

A day, and a season, for the Hawk bashers to shut up.
Nice day also for Micah Hyde.
Surprisingly, I still hear national sports commentators talking about how bad the Packers defense is. Apparently they’re sill reading last year’s
    summaries.

Couldn’t be prouder of my Packers! Hard fought win. But our defense really needs to step it up (consistently) if we are going to make it deep in the playoffs.

  16. edgarpoe3 says: Oct 13, 2013 5:38 PM

This is for you Flacco haters out there that use stats to make your case. Today Flacco had an 112.6 quarterback rating. That’s a pretty good rating, right? Do you think he played well throughout the game? The Ravens punted nine times! They had 4 first downs going into the 4th quarter (this is out of memory so it may not be completely accurate – but it is close!) and did not move the ball well all game until midway through the 4th quarter.

My point? Stats mean nothing. But a quarterback that consistently wins is better than one who can pad the stats. Flacco did play well in the end, but it was too little, too late. I’d rather have a Flacco with a 70.0 rating and a Ravens win than what happened today.

  17. edgarpoe3 says: Oct 13, 2013 5:43 PM

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here… How is nobody mentioning Harbaugh’s end of the 1st half debacle of a decision???

12 Seconds left on your own 28 yard line and we’re going deep?!?! Are you kidding me?!?! You need a quick hailmary just to even have a chance at a field goal. How is no one talking about this?? It defied all logic. It was absolutely INSANE. I’m glad the Packers the Packers caused a fumble there and got a FG with 1 second left because when you do insanely stupid stuff like that, you deserve to reap the rewards of your stupidity. I’m completely at a loss for how this isn’t a story in itself. This topic needs some attention, it was a complete joke. Harbaugh needs to be held accountable.

Packers are a balanced and strong team, obviously a great QB, no shame in losing a close one to them. But Ravens should still be kicking themselves, after not taking at least one FG they should have had, and Flacco fumbling to give away another 3 at end of the half, yet even then they had a good chance to win if they could have made a stop on 3d and 4 with 2 minutes left. Can’t keep squandering opportunities against good teams.

I did mention Harbaugh’s game management, but it is hardly the deciding factor of why the Ravens lost. Even after they went for it on 4and1 and didn’t make it, the Ravens had the Packers three and out on the next series. They had awesome field position again at midfield after the punt and couldn’t move the ball except for backwards.

The play you’re referring to was a wash IMO because Crosby had just missed a kick he should have made. 6-0 instead of 3-0 or 6-3 is hardly an insurmountable lead. Harbaugh needs to be better at the end of the first half, but if you really think it was about one play then why not the TD to Nelson where Webb was caught peeking into the backfield? He’s supposed to be the Ravens best corner.

  29. teal379 says: Oct 13, 2013 6:27 PM

Been hearing a lot of commentary that GB has an “inconsistent” running game – well were it not for a Boykin penalty last week – that would be 4 games in a row with over 100 yards rushing (and 2 in a row for Lacy) on a team that went 44 games without a single one.

GB’s running game has gone up against the 49′s, the Bengals and the Ravens – all teams with a STOUT D-line.

I think we can bury the whole “GB can’t run the ball” meme. Also I think, with how stout GB’s D has been against the run – it’s time to end that too.

They’ve played good backs and stood up to them – all year long.

As a fan that still gets heartburn thinking about the 4th & 26 they gave up to McNabb & the Eagles in a playoff game resulting in a loss that looked disturbingly similar.

As a lifelong Pack fan, hats off to the Ravens fans that have commented thus far. I’ve NEVER seen opposing fans this classy, after a win OR a loss.

As for the end of the first half, the idea behind deferring on the opening kickoff is that you hope to get a score going into halftime, then you receive the second half kick. Score again there and you’ve got your foot on your opponent’s neck.

Harbaugh played it right… the result didn’t work out, but he still played it right (in my humble opinion).

  39. ampatsisahypocrite says: Oct 13, 2013 7:56 PM

Fantastic job by Flacco posting up all of ZERO points in the half and burying his team. The difference is this week, no special teams or defense scoring to cover up the usual lame performance from the Baltimore QB.

Of course, Flacco had improved to all of THREE points by the fourth quarter… I mean, c’mon, that’s an ENTIRE POINT PER QUARTER AVERAGE. He’s certainly earned that big contract.

Not terrible? Look at his stats and play. First year with a bad line and you see what kind if QB he is. He us kind of like Tebow this year, only good for 1-2 drives and relies on his defense and special teams to keep them in games. Ben has been behind terrible lines for 3-4 years now and puts up better numbers in partial seasons then Flacco.
9 playoff wins and a SB MVP, great, now like how you tell Steeler fans, stop living in the past. This is 2013 and he’s been terrible this year.

Do you know anything about economics? Flacco got the going rate. ALL Quarterbacks are over paid. When carrot-top’s contract is up he will get decidedly more than Flacco – not because he deserves it, because the market dictates it. In 3 years, Flacco’s contract will not be anywhere near the top. Neither will Dalton’s contract be anywhere near the top – but his 2016 contract will still be more than Joe’s 2013. I don’t no why I waste my time here.

Do you know anything about economics? Being the highest paid at the time is not the going rate. For that to be factually considered the going rate, every single QB contract would have to be bigger than the next. Now, class dismissed.

Report comment. No hangover it’s what non raven fans were trying to tell while you were boasting from march to sept…..you lost too much on the offense and jump ball Joe needs to be lucky(4th and29 with a favorable spot lucky) which it seems he used up last year passing to Boldin. Losing Pitta really hurts, but injuries are part of the game as raven fans love saying to others. But admitting you were wrong is good for you……you are still champs till February.

Losing Pitta really hurts, but injuries are part of the game as raven fans love saying to others. But admitting you were wrong is good for you……you are still champs till February.”

Actually that isn’t what I said but thanks for taking my words and twisting into another ignorant Flacco slam. Ravens are now tied dead last in rushing yards per carry and they have pro bowler Ray Rice. That leaves too many 2nd/3rd and longs. The entire offense needs to do shots of Red Bull or something pre-game to get fired up.

If anything this is where Flacco’s laid back demeanor might be too laid back. He needs to get a little pissed off.

Sad truth is this is the true Flacco, before he had pitta, Boldin, and rice to bail him out. Only raven nation doesn’t see how average joe really is.

Did I hurt your feelings? You should get a thicker skin. I’m a Ravens fan on a Ravens/Packers story and you are a Steeler fan posting an unfactual, negative comment. I don’t see how I am being hypocritical.

Beware the Virginia dwelling cannibal. He even eats his so-called fellow Steelers’ fans which confirms my suspicion that he’s really a Redskins’ fan who jumps on the Steelers’ bandwagon whenever it’s convenient. Given that both his teams are 1-4, he’s probably particularly agitated and needs someone upon which to dump his impotent rage. Really, really sad.
