Another loss for Vikings, Desmond Bishop tears ACL

Carolina Panthers v Minnesota Vikings Getty Images

The news from yesterday’s demolition at the hands of the Panthers continues to get worse for the Vikings.

According to Tom Pelissero of USA Today, Vikings linebacker Desmond Bishop suffered a torn left ACL in yesterday’s loss, knocking him out for the season.

Bishop was starting for the first time as a Viking after signing there this offseason, and didn’t make it until halftime.

It’s another blow for a Vikings defense that also lost safety Harrison Smith to a turf toe injury, and cornerback Xavier Rhodes to an ankle sprain.

I feel bad for him…finally wins starting job this week only to go down. That’s football though..

More than 1 Vikings fan on PFT all offseason talked this team up as a serious title contender. Now they’ve all gone into hiding or deny that they ever thought that.

And when they signed Desmond Bishop they taunted Packers fans like they had just stolen a superstar from their defense.

Zygi, if you’re reading this, it’s time to clean house. Frazier and the ENTIRE coaching staff need to go…NOW.

This team is going to get destroyed by a winless Giants team next week, and the 31st ranked defense will be absolutely assaulted the following weekend against Rodgers.

@jhein23 As a Viking fan, I can admit that we thought our team was better than it is, our defense has played inexplicably bad and has costs us multiple games already.. But the fact that you’re saying were all going into to hiding is nonsense, stop trolling Vikings forums and thinking you know more than everyone else

Just listened to Frazier press conference……same garbage. Fix this, fix that. He actually said we had a good day punting. WOW!

I have bled purple my entire life, and will continue to do so, bu seriously…..stick a fork in it, they be done!

  8. milkcan44 says: Oct 14, 2013 2:00 PM

Dez is a late round draft choice who worked his way up the hard way, finally got a good contract and starting recognition, and nothing but hard luck since. Hope his career is not over, but at least he has a Super Bowl ring to be proud of – he was a significant contributor to that team.

  9. wdnemesis says: Oct 14, 2013 2:01 PM

Lol not this year, the defense was a big surprise. Never thout the CBs would fail so hard.

  10. albertmn says: Oct 14, 2013 2:05 PM

Not all Vikings fans talked this team up as a contender before the season, only the deluded ones that predict titles every season. They lucked into 10 wins last year and didn’t make any significant upgrades.

QB – mostly same as last year
    RB – same
    TE – same
WR – Jennings in, Harvin out, Patterson is a project – mostly a push
OL – mostly the same, but playing poorly
    DL – same
LB – Bishop was they only slight change
DB – Winfield gone, Rhodes in, slight downgrade short term

How did any thinking fan think they were going to be better this season? This Viking fan sure didn’t.

  11. hscorpio says: Oct 14, 2013 2:05 PM

While I don’t like seeing any player, even a Viking, get placed on IR, I think there is a burning question that was not addressed….

Any word on how this development will affect his drive to be named NFL Defensive Player of the Year?

  12. chicagogiantsfan says: Oct 14, 2013 2:10 PM

They are playing the Giants this week…practically a bye week. They have time to find a replacement.

  13. wisportsfanpbbb says: Oct 14, 2013 2:10 PM

Packer fan here… I have no problem with Vikings fans talking up their team in the preseason, that’s what preseason is for. And I think a lot of honest Packer fans can admit losing Jennings and Bishop to the Vikings did not sit well with GB nation. I just think that last year’s Vikes played above their talent with a monster year from AP… they are coming back down to where they really are. They need a real threat at QB and a more consistent defense. Sorry for Bishop, he was always a favorite of mine in GB, a scrappy guy who worked his way up to a solid starting LB. Hope he can recover and latch on somewhere next year.

    @jhein

I’m not afraid to admit when I’m wrong. I easily thought this team was a playoff team. I projected 11-5 due to younger players getting better than last year. Super Bowl winner? Probably not, but crap happens. Don’t act like I’m stupid because I backed my team with rational thought. This team has more talent than their 1-4 record shows. Proof to the point that in the NFL, you are what your record says you are.

So instead of tearing others down for making a stand, why don’t you make one of your own about your beloved Packers? I’ll come back and tell you that you’re wrong too.

  17. jimthebuilder27 says: Oct 14, 2013 2:14 PM

I was against the Packers releasing him, as I’ve always liked this guy: tough as nails, a competitor and an asset.

However, I’m wondering if the Packers released him because of injuries or concern over injuries?

  18. zzr600guy says: Oct 14, 2013 2:17 PM

As a GB fan i feel bad for Bishop, he was a good LB and a team player. I hope he recovers and plays again, just not with minny.

  19. jimnsota says: Oct 14, 2013 2:21 PM

So using your logic of “injury prone” is Clay Matthews going to be cut? Wouldn’t be considered injury prone?
As a football fan I’m getting sick of all the season ending injuries. What is the problem with ACL’s and football. It doesn’t happen like this in any other sport.

  20. gsprulz says: Oct 14, 2013 2:22 PM

Vikings have a really rough schedule in terms of offenses they face this year, so not having a secondary is gonna make everything look 100x worse. Even if we lose this season the viking fans maybe winning because the coaching staff isn’t a fit for what the fans have always wanted. You can’t play conservative in the north to the degree that they choose to.

  21. nflpoker says: Oct 14, 2013 2:23 PM

From the looks of the Vikings now and also the rest of their schedule, in all honesty, they will be lucky to win 2 more games this year. I guess it looks like they will be drafting #3 – #6 overall next draft. The Jags have #1. Complain as much as you want about the QBs, but the coaching (lack) and the defense (where?), makes it almost inevitable.

  22. gb4mn0 says: Oct 14, 2013 2:27 PM

I do feel bad for bishop tho. Flashes of greatness, trends of mediocrity and now oft injured. When he made big plays they stood I out. I remember him laying the wood in preseason as a rookie and thinking he had potential but now he has a tough climb ahead

  24. purpleguy says: Oct 14, 2013 2:29 PM

Same here. They were very fortunate to make the playoffs last year. They need to address and CORRECT 2 major concerns for next year:

    1) Head coach, which will mean new coordinators
    2) QB

If they don’t, we will be having this conversation next year as well.

  27. mvp43 says: Oct 14, 2013 2:37 PM

That sucks. I liked Bishop when he played in GB and was upset when they let him go. I also liked the way he handled his departure as opposed to Jennings who took every opportunity to rip the Packers with a vengence. At least Bishop had class.

  28. purplekoolaid1 says: Oct 14, 2013 2:41 PM

Dez was cut because his CAP # was going to something like $5 million, which cleared a lot of cap space to sign Rodgers and Matthews. Plus we had Brad Jones to take that spot.

  32. whatjusthapped says: Oct 14, 2013 2:53 PM

I always liked Bishop, he wasn’t the fastest LB but when you play IB on a 3-4 defense, you don’t need a lot of speed.

I mostly felt bad that he would lower himself to sign with the Vikings. After winning a SB ring in GB, you would think he would want to at least play on a contender.

So hopefully the surgery goes well and he can end up in a better place. There’s a reason the Vikings never won a Superbowl, their front office stinks, as evidenced by this year’s sorry team.

Seriously I feel bad for Bishop. If he doesn’t make that TD saving tackle of Desean Jackson in the Philly game the Packers don’t even get to the Super Bowl. Hopefully he can eventually resume his career. Good guy and a lot of Packer fans pulling for him.

  35. killmenowvikesfan says: Oct 14, 2013 3:05 PM

wisportsfanpbbb & albertmn: I could not agree more–we (Vikes) played above our talent level last year and came crashing back down to earth now that AP appears human and we’ve made no significant upgrades/changes to help us get any better. I admit I was pissed off when we got ranked 29th in the power rankings earlier, but now that feels about right after that Carolina beat down. At least the other games losses were somewhat exciting to watch and close until the end.
Sorry Bishop, tough break man, maybe you could have helped us improve our crappy DEF. Lots of injuries this week, its the one great equalizer in the NFL…

  36. fwippel says: Oct 14, 2013 3:14 PM

Ouch. Another hole in an alread porous defense. Hope Bishop makes a full recovery.

I have to admit it: I thought the Vikings were headed for a very good season and another playoff birth, and I thought the defense woud be the reason why. After five weeks, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

  37. kenshalek says: Oct 14, 2013 3:30 PM

I actually thought this was 7-9 8-8 team. I expected the defense would be top-15 lol, that was my over-sight!!. Hopefully a new coaching staff can turn things around. Very good young defense on this team that Frazier doesn’t want to play. Next coach will. Trade Jared Allen before deadline, lets stock-pile draft picks. I NEVER thought I’d say trade Allen but, Vikes have made no attempt to re-sign him, might as well get something for him!!!!.

This season has been a win/win since the start. If they played well then Ponder being a 1st round pick is justified and same goes with extending Fraizer. If they loose then the Ponder experiment is over and the Vikings can get an experienced leader who can light a fire under his team. Now if there is any year to be 1-4 this is it because 9-7 or 8-8 is going to make the playoffs. Can Freeman come in and be a savior and win 8 of 11. Who knows but he will have to win it 35-30 every game. It will be interesting to see how he does. As far as the glaring weakness. It should be time to fire Williams and Pagac and just let Fraizer coach the D until the end of the season. On offense Musgrave is truly offensive but just let him finish the year with a big arm QB and see what his offense can do. The Vikings have the talent they just need better coaching. The 49ers, Colts, Chiefs, Texans D, even the Bears so far have all shown what a new prespective does for existing talent. The Vikings have good players on both sides but the sit Patterson don’t throw deep much and haven’t utilized the 2 TE set they were envisioning when they signed Carlson to go with Rudolph. On D the players are just out of position and if Frazier takes over he can fix it. Next year they can start anew with better coaches. As for now though it should be bye bye Williams. The Vikings can go on a run but they need to play Freeman now and they can’t loose to the Giants or Packers at home.

  43. valhalla2013 says: Oct 14, 2013 6:49 PM

  44. valhalla2013 says: Oct 14, 2013 8:00 PM

  45. banlarson says: Oct 14, 2013 8:10 PM

Every fan base has those that look at their team with rose colored glasses. Most Vikings fans I know thought 8-8 or 9-7 would be a good record considering we have a tougher schedule and as most believe overachieved last year due to a spectacular season by AP.

To all you no class Packer fans rubbing it in; I wouldn’t count your chickens just yet, there is a good chance you don’t win the division OR even make the playoffs. I wouldn’t be so high on your team either. Rogers had one bad game and you got blown out. Just be happy you have a franchise QB and a good coaching staff and show some class, I know its hard.

  46. taintedsaints2009 says: Oct 14, 2013 8:16 PM

Sad to see this happen. I was rooting for this guy.

Bishop was a star, like it or not, packers fans, but he has had two years of bad injuries. Vikings took a no risk chance on him.

No serious Vikings fan thought this team was good, and knows last year was a fluke. If you are the extreme minority and thought they would win the NFC north, you’re just a delusional diehard. They have great talented players In positions but they don’t know how to use it. They are held back once again by no quarterback. And their offensive line is terrible. I could score on their secondary.

Joe Webb and Patterson are on the sideline. Guarantee you Rodgers could make them all pros. Is Greg Jennings still on this team?

Let’s just move them to la. Ziggy just want his stadium so he can sell the team an an enormous profit. Can’t say I blame him. If the people of Minnesota are stupid enough to pay for half of a stadium, I’d probably do the same thing if I were him.

  47. coachkilla6 says: Oct 14, 2013 10:08 PM

  50. allday2k says: Oct 15, 2013 12:26 AM

All of you that are saying all of the Viking fans predicted a Super Bowl or even a playoff berth are delusional. I was excited when I would hear the sportscasters say the Vikes were a darkhorse for the Super Bowl this year, but I knew it wasn’t realistic.

To everyone saying the Vikes overachieved last year, you are correct. Even as a Vikes fan, I predicted we would have a 6 win season last year. The only reason we got 10 wins is because of AD’s monstrous season.

I did not think we would be as bad as we are this year though, but between the coordinators, the OL poor play, the Winfield loss and the defense’s level of play, I would say this team is right where they should be, but could’ve been better with a different coaching staff. Spielman should’ve pulled the plug on the offensive and defensive coordinators week 1. If he had we wouldn’t be 1-4, I blame him and his stubbornness more than anyone else, Zygi needs to fire him too.

I never understood why Jennings talked so much crap about the Packers when it was all him that made the decision to come here as a free agent once his contract expired. I felt if anyone had the right to do so it was Bishop since he was cut from their team, and I never heard a word outta him. I think he is much more classier than Greg, Bishop let the signing do the speaking for itself. It’s a shame he is done for the year since he works hard and uses perseverance to get where he wants to be as a player.

NOTE TO ZYGI- FIRE MUSGRAVE, WILLIAMS, AND SPIELMAN TOO!

  51. peoriaviking says: Oct 15, 2013 10:42 AM

No doubt that this team has better talent than the record shows, especially on Offense. I think, no believe, that if Frazier does not get things turned around soon he will be let go. That will put an end to all of his staff. Frazier is too conservative and stoic for my taste. Even Coach Grant wasn’t this way. I would love to see a Coach with the fire and passion like the Harbaugh brothers have. The problem with the football team is not the QB. Twice Ponder got leads against teams for the Defense to protect with 2 minutes left and both times the Defense failed. The same thing came within 6 yards and 10 seconds of happening again in London! Let’s hope that Freeman does really well. He’s only 25 and has a lot of years left still in that arm. The Vikings then can use most of their draft picks in May on Defensive picks. DB’s and even LB’s to start. I would like to see Williams fired and maybe the Defense can get sorted. When they apply pressure they play better and when they play prevent they get rocked! At the end of the day the team needs new a new direction brought on by a new HC and his staff

  61. filthymcnasty1 says: Oct 15, 2013 9:42 PM
