Bills plan to sign Matt Flynn today

Matt Flynn AP

While the news on Thad Lewis’ foot injury was good, the Bills still needed to add to their odd-lot collection of quarterbacks.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Bills plan to sign Matt Flynn today.

For a guy who has made a lot of money for playing one game every so often, he’s a perfect fit in Buffalo, where he’ll slide in with Lewis and Jeff Tuel.

They’re waiting on first-rounder E.J. Manuel to get well, having already placed Kevin Kolb on injured reserve. With the way Flynn’s short stay in Oakland turned out, it’s hard to imagine how much he’ll help, but at a certain point, you need numbers to get through practice.

Ugh…why Matt Flynn. Why Not Vince Young, or Brett Farve…or a common raccoon. Im sure any of them would be a better BACKUP than Matt Flynn :/

We should really consider bringing in Tim Tebow to do what he does best…Pray to god no more of our QBs get hurt

I used to feel bad for teams like Buffalo, Cleveland, etc.. But, how many bad QB decisions in a row is tolerable to a fan base? Who is next? Rex Grossman?

Well Flynn can play, he has an arm he just isn’t mobile. He was on a team that gave up ten sacks to a mobile qb, they had a 3rd & 48. I mean if you do that with a mobile guy, a person that doesn’t move at all is doomed! And Flynn scrambled a few times. Imagine Brady behind that line, the slower guy I’ve ever seen run who falls over bouncing into refs.

    Just saying!

Now it’s just up to him to show that Oakland was more their fault than his. Of course since it’s the Bills he’s doomed, their QB curse is ridiculous.

Is that game against Detroit going to be the most profitable single game ever played by a quarterback?

  9. louderthanwords1 says: Oct 14, 2013 1:18 PM

Orivar- ill give you that Matt Flynn has an arm and in fact he has 2. What he doesn’t have is an NFL caliber arm. Flynn had improved his arm strength over the yrs in Green Bay but he still has an arm that makes Kyle Orton look like he has a cannon. Have you actually watched any of Flynn playing over the yrs? On his best days he is pretty accurate on short to intermediate throws but struggles with the deep ball, reading the defense and lack of arm strength.

  10. louderthanwords1 says: Oct 14, 2013 1:23 PM

Mshawn75 – who would you like Buffalo to sign if not Flynn? Their not proclaiming him a saviour to the franchise and their new starter. They need a consummate professional for a few weeks who can probably run a scout team til Ej gets healthy then Flynn will probably be cut. So sorry Mshawn this isn’t a bad qb decision.

J.P. Losman is the answer in Buffalo. Fact.

Yes I understand kind of what ur saying here but your acting like we’re picking up Flynn to take us to the promise land! No our up and coming rookie QB is hurt and might be for the rest of the season. Personally Idc if they bring back Rob Johnson to lose the rest of the games from here. We’re not going to the playoffs but we showed things are turning around with this new staff. Were still 3 years away from being a playoff team and we all know this. Ill never be giving up on these guys in the end tho. Bills fan for life!

Matt Flynn is good at cashing paychecks! Remember also beat out Brian Brohm who was a Higher draft choice than him for the Packers. Matt Flynn is an accurate passer of medium range passes and short passes, not as much on the long ball. Matt Flynn is now going to be cashing checks from the Seahawks, Raiders & Bills at the same time! Way to go! Triple dipping! I need to figure out how to do that!
Now the Bills have 2 Quarterbacks on their roster who threw pick 6’s the same week to send their teams to losses, Tuel vs the Browns late, and Flynn vs the Redskins….

Believe it or not, Rex Grossman already has a job. He’s still in Washington.

    Yup. He never left.

    Still there.

    Who knew?

Maybe Flynn keeps the ball moving and if he quits the mistakes can keep the Bills at .500 until Manuel returns. Not a terrible signing, but with this team, with these RBs and injured/inexperienced WRs, I’d take Tebow. Run it 50 times a game with Freddy Jackson and Spiller on the read-option. They’d kill people.

  17. orivar says: Oct 14, 2013 1:34 PM

    @louderthanwords1

Yeah I’ve watched him and I was looking at the Oakland games closely to see how he would do and that’s what back up what I say. His intermediate throws have a lot of accuracy and zip on them when he’s allowed to stand in the pocket. Thus far the film has showed that his arm of perfectly fine at the NFL level, throws that are 45+ yards he never really got the chance to do so it isn’t safe to say if he is or isn’t proficient at the them, same with the reading of defenses due to the lack of an offensive line.

People that watch this game have the tendency to forget that offense doesn’t start with the QB, it starts with the line. No line, no qb, no success.

Not saying he’s perfect but Oakland is a bad situation to show you’re a stand out QB. So we will see what he really can or can’t do if signs and plays in a game, which he probably will see snaps.

Concurred. Plus if they want a little consistency until Manuel comes back, Tebow will actually stay healthy.

Better call Doug Flutie he was your last good qb

  22. jasonfinfan says: Oct 14, 2013 2:23 PM

As a fin fan, I really would rather face Matt Flynn then Thaddeus Lewis.. People sleep on Lewis but he is a QB that put up better stats then Matt Ryan did playing at Duke of all places. Any guy who moves his way up to starting with an undrafted pedigree. Is performing well day in and day out or they would be cast aside in a hot minute.

He has performed well in his starts over the years and limits mistakes. I believe Lewis should be a solid backup or spot starter in the NFL but he needs the shot to prove it. Im hoping he isn’t going to miss any games because this is his best shot he will ever get to prove himself..

Realistically as a fin fan i would LOVE it if the bills start Matt Flynn this week. No familiarity with the recievers,Oline or Team makes it alot easier for the fins defense.

  23. vipod4ever says: Oct 14, 2013 2:31 PM

Oakland’s o-line was weak, R.Wilson is a phenom, the excuses and pardons Flynn gets are oustanding. He’s got a speghetti of an arm and his judgement in the pocket is terrible. 15 min of fame can certainly carry some in the Never Fault League.

  24. steelerben says: Oct 14, 2013 2:32 PM

Why not Leinart instead? He at least knows the playbook.

Great move by the Bills! It ensures Buffalo will find their next star QB after benching-before-ever-playing Flynn.

I’m from Buffalo and I know how bills fans will take this. Personally, and like children. But…
what if 2 years from now EJ Manuel doesn’t pan out? What if “our up-and-coming” QB stops coming up? Suppose he remains as inconsistent as he has been? Then What, Bills fans? ….Then what???? The Bills aren’t going to have a great record this year. I would consider taking one of the many good prospects available in next years draft.

  27. coltzfan166 says: Oct 14, 2013 3:12 PM

It’s a trap, Matt. They’re just going to release you when EJ is ready.

  28. metalhead65 says: Oct 14, 2013 3:27 PM

so in other words the bills have decided to tank the season and try and get the #1 pick. why else would they sign this proven loser? nothing else says desperation than signing this clown.

  29. fordmandalay says: Oct 14, 2013 3:30 PM

So the Bills now have Kolb and Flynn, together at last. All they need is to sign Matt Cassel and they’ll have the trifecta of overpaid failed backup QBs!

  30. tooclosetobuffalo says: Oct 14, 2013 3:47 PM

ever since the Bills screwed over Doug Flutie they’ve been cursed with a long line of pitiful pivots.Looks good on them.

  32. kwickett85 says: Oct 14, 2013 4:39 PM

Matt Flynn won’t fit in just like Tuel didn’t. Their system is best fit for mobile guys but the play calling is so bad it doesn’t really matter who they put in. Let’s run the same exact running play at the goal line on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down, not get in each time, then run a bootleg with no WR’s or TE’s in case the defense catches onto it.

*shrug* Nope – not taking it wrong at all.

ANY rookie is a risk – you have to play your cards and take your chances…

How many “top of the draft” QBs flame out and fail? A fair percentage. Same could happen to EJ.

Honestly – I liked what the Bills did this year – they picked a guy with good potential and went for him while he was available.

Frankly- at this point – the season is a “kick the tires” on everyone. The Bills aren’t going to “sneak” into the playoffs as a wild card. Not the way the rest of the AFC is playing. So the Bills should evaluate everyone on their team and make their draft plans accordingly.

If EJ turns out to come back looking better than ever? Awesome. If Thad Lewis winds up being better than EJ? Fine. Use him instead. If they both look “meh” this year, and a phenom is available when they pick in the draft? Take him.

That’s life in the NFL. As long as the new coaching staff keeps trying to make the team better- I have absolutely ZERO problem with that…

  34. louderthanwords1 says: Oct 14, 2013 5:19 PM

Orivar – your only talking about 1 stop for Flynn. He has a lot mire game film than that with Seattle and Green Bay as well as the knock on him coming out of college was lack of arm strength. As for you saying Flynn shows zip on his ball the only possible explanation I can come up with is you were fast forwarding in the game and didn’t realize it.

Flynn wasn’t taking snaps from the 3rd string center. He played so poorly against the Redskins Oakland had to cut him.

Watched Flynn play at LSU in 2007, He was a big reason why that team won the National Championship that year (rewatch the LSU- Florida game against Tebow and Urban Meyer at their peak, Flynn threw clutch throw after clutch throw in that game). Most competent offense LSU has had up to this year. People are in love with big QBs with big arms who are mobile, I’d rather have a QB with anticipation and accuracy anyday. People thought Jamarcus Russell was a phenom at LSU and in the NFL draft. Flynn outplayed him by a mile at LSU when he got his chance, this guys needs multiple games in a season to prove whether he has it or not. May not ever be anything other than a backup, but a clutch passer, and accurate…

  37. danielddz says: Oct 15, 2013 1:29 AM

Everyone bashing Matt Flynn is bogus. What opportunity has he had to show his skills. One game! A game, in which he broke franchise records in a franchise with a qb named Favre AND Rodgers. Proved he can win a championship at qb at lsu. He got “beat out” for starting jobs by Russell Wilson and Pryor? Because this read option/mobile stuff. His biggest downfall has nothing to do with his talents as a qb but everything to do with his lack of skills at runnin back. When Flynn threw an int Oakland throws him under the bus and blames him for the loss but their starter just threw 3!? And Russell Wilson throws for like 180yds a game but wins games off of his defense and lynch so no one is going to complain there. Matt Flynn is a pocket passer. Oakland have up 10 sacks last week. Give him protection and someone to throw to, he can easily put a team in position to win. He did it against elite defenses in the sec. Look at his preseason numbers, completion percentage, pass yds, tds, ints.. Pretty sure they were just as good if not better than the guys who “beat him out” he just didn’t have the 4.3-4.5 40yd dash needed apparently to play qb these days?

  38. mackcarrington says: Oct 15, 2013 5:14 PM

There seems to be a lot of SEC honks on Bills threads these days. Why waste time here? Why don’t you contact the Bills coaches and profess your Matt Flynn love?

  39. murray26 says: Oct 21, 2013 5:49 AM

Give flynn the starting job on sunday vs miami and he will do well let him play and if he gets into a rhythm he will be the starting QB for a different team next year no team has givein him a lot of playing time
