Hakeem Nicks: I’m a Giant right now, I’m going to enjoy it

Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz AP

Earlier on Monday, Mike Florio shared a conversation he had with Peter King on the Football Night in America set about the Giants looking into trading wide receiver Hakeem Nicks.

Nicks’ name has come up as a trade candidate elsewhere as well, which isn’t much of a surprise. Nicks is set to become a free agent after the season, he’s had trouble staying healthy throughout his career and the Giants are 0-6, to name three reasons why a deal could make sense. Nicks said he’s aware of the trade talk, calling it something he can’t control while stopping well short of saying that he wanted to be a Giant for the rest of this season and beyond.

“At the end of the day, business is business,” Nicks said, via Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. “But I haven’t been given any whiffs of anything my way. So as far as outside talk, I can’t control that. But I’m a Giant. I’m a Giant right now, I’m going to enjoy it. We’ve just got to start winning some games.”

Vacchiano also reports that he’s heard from sources that the most the Giants could expect in return for Nicks is a mid-round draft pick, which might not be enough of a return for the Giants to make a deal that could be seen as waving the white flag on the season. Running back Brandon Jacobs said such a deal would be a “dagger” to the players left on the team, although it’s fair to wonder if that’s a real deterrent when those players have steered the team to their current spot in the standings.

Hakeem Nicks of the Atlanta Falcons!

Makes sense with Julio Jones a ? for next year and Roddy White a mere shell of his former self.

Patriots and lions really could use Hakeem.

  5. blacknole08 says: Oct 14, 2013 2:48 PM

Yea thats right, leave NY. I would love for my Panthers to get Nicks when he becomes a FA.

    Come home Hakeem!

A Giant? I’m offended by that name…some people have Acromegaly…that’s not cool – CHANGE THE NAME!!!

  9. ttommytom says: Oct 14, 2013 2:51 PM

The Comp pick will be higher than what someone will offer. He is not going anywhere.

Nicks is part of the woes of the Giants. He is terrible.

Peter King’s source is some teenage kid in his mom’s basement playing his 20th franchise in Madden. A fifth? Why bother?

Because a 5th is more than you’d get from him when he walks away as a free agent, plus you don’t have to pay him for more than half the year this year.

  16. stickyicky97 says: Oct 14, 2013 3:10 PM

He has said before that he wants to play for his hometown Panthers. I would love to see them trade for Nicks. We could then move Smitty to the slot. Come on Gettleman. Make it happen!

  17. justintuckrule says: Oct 14, 2013 3:11 PM

@bleedgreen – we’d get a 3rd rd comp pick if he left as a FA. If we take a 5th rder, the team that gets him would also get a 3rd rd comp pick for him. Essentially, that would mean the team that gets him is trading a 5th for Nicks and a 3rd.

    Like I said….Only in Madden.

  18. maritime85 says: Oct 14, 2013 3:13 PM

What are u smoking? Why would they trade him to philly?

  19. helix828 says: Oct 14, 2013 3:16 PM

The Jets could use some help at WR. He wouldn’t even have to find a new house. Get it done Idzik.

  20. peopletrains says: Oct 14, 2013 3:17 PM

Ewing Theory at play here. The Giants offense will be better without him.

  21. justintuckrule says: Oct 14, 2013 3:18 PM

    Harvin – 1st and 3rd
    Roy Williams – 1st and 3rd
Jeremy Shockey (of all people) – 2nd and 5th

After Tuck, Kiwi, Diehl, Snee, Rolle, Baas, Webster are cut or take big pay cuts, the Giants will have $30+M in cap space. We don’t need to dump Nicks like how the cash strapped Ravens got all they could (a 6th) for Boldin before cutting him.

We’ll use high picks on OL and pick up one or two in FA. Give Eli time and he’ll be a 4,500+ 30 TD QB again. 30% of those numbers are Nicks. A fifth? Pass some of what you’re all smokin’ to me. You must have the Heisenberg grade.

  22. nyfootballgiants says: Oct 14, 2013 3:23 PM

Giants wont get a 3rd rounder if he leaves. Picks are awarded based on the differential of players lost vs players signed as free agents.

For the Giants to get a 3rd, he would need to catch some balls this season, and the Giants not sign any free agents.

Based on the level of play this season, the draft alone isn’t going to fix this team.

I wouldn’t trade him for a 5th – but if they can work it up to a 3rd – it might be a good idea – even if it impacts this season.

  23. bigbosscrispy says: Oct 14, 2013 3:35 PM

What happened to this team, this roster…. Where are all the draft picks? Over the last 2 years we got Wilson, Randall & Pugh – for a team that doesn’t indulge in big name FA’s we sure should have some up and comers on the roster, right? SMH

  25. falconsfanriseup says: Oct 14, 2013 3:57 PM

hope the falcons pick em up. will be a big boost to their offense as of right now. and maybe hes not catching balls bc look whos throwing it to him. matt ryan would make him such a better reciever

As a lifelong Cowboys fan, I am enjoying the Giants season a lot myself. Here! Here!

  27. arwiv says: Oct 14, 2013 4:02 PM

Peter King is an idiot. Nicks would get at least a 2nd. Like another poster said, the Giants will be close to 30 mill under the cap next year after they cut the appropriate people. They aren’t getting forced into making a stupid trade. If a team wants Nicks this year they are going to have to pay for him.

  28. mrsmell says: Oct 14, 2013 4:02 PM

Put Nicks in NewOrl. Colston is just not the same. Drew aint getting younger and this maybe a final attempt as Colston is not the same, Jimmy maybe done.

  29. myeaglescantwin says: Oct 14, 2013 4:07 PM

Sucks that Nicks can’t stay healthy.

This guy is super talented, but if you can’t stay on the field, you cannot make an impact.

I’d love to have him on the Eagles if the Giants don’t look into signing him, but that doesn’t exactly fit the “rebuilding” motto they have going around here.

even though we are currently in 1st for the NFC east.

  30. abninf says: Oct 14, 2013 4:08 PM

Dallas could use him on the practice squad.

Eli manning is not and never has been elite. I remember only a short while ago people called me stupid for saying that. So what do you all say now? Name one other “elite” quarterback that just randomly has a 0-6 start to a season. The only reason he was ever called elite is because he plays in New York.

  32. justintuckrule says: Oct 14, 2013 4:19 PM

It all comes down to how serious a few of the contenders are in thinking that they are a Nicks away from going to Seattle and beating them in that hellacious stadium of theirs in the NFCCG.

GB – Ain’t scoring enough if Cobb and Jones are out.

Atl – If you think you have a run in you, forget it without someone opposite White.

N.O. – Graham hurt and Colston (eh). Could use one more. Better do it now if you don’t want to play outside.

SF – more so than any team above is on the precipice. No way, no how beating Seattle by just having Davis. You have 49 picks in the 2014 draft. Give us a few good ones, he’s yours. Otherwise, kiss another precious year of having Kapernick cheap good bye.

  33. arwiv says: Oct 14, 2013 4:26 PM

Eli has played at an elite level over certain periods of time, but no….he was never an elite QB. At his best, eli can be somewhere in the 6-10 range of best NFL qb’s. Will he ever return there after this year though? I like the guy a lot but I have my doubts.

  34. flipola says: Oct 14, 2013 4:30 PM

    Nicks for Britt, straight up.

“Like this”? The thumbs up is enough.

  35. stagpaoa says: Oct 14, 2013 4:30 PM

  36. Carl Gerbschmidt says: Oct 14, 2013 4:46 PM

  37. mackcarrington says: Oct 14, 2013 5:23 PM

I get what he is saying. Being on a 0-6 Giants team is more enjoyable than being on an 0-5 Tampa team or an 0-6 Jacksonville team.

The great hall of famer Troy Aikman went 6-10 in 1997 (year 8).

    Those “people” were right.

  42. fievel03 says: Oct 14, 2013 5:42 PM

Lions should make a move. They are desperate for a legitimate #2 WR now that Burleson is out. The rest of the pieces of the puzzle are starting to fall into place. Burleson SHOULD be the slot, not the #2.

  43. kev86 says: Oct 14, 2013 6:16 PM

Hakeem is a SB champion. His 2011 postseason was awesome. Great pick. It will be tough to keep him with the cap and league designed for parity. Panthers make sense if Gettlemen the ex Giant exec. wants to pay. I’d rather keep him but understand the rumors at 0-6 and his pending FA status. Nothing lower than a third please.

    —————————————-

    Steelers past four drafts anyone?

I’m a Steelers fan through and through but any of our fans making fun of another team for drafting a “bust” like Nicks needs to look in the mirror. They’ve got nothing out of their past three draft classes. They’ve drafted four starting lineman and the only good one is Pouncey who’s hurt all the time and still overrated. They already gave up on Mike Adams.

At least Nicks has an exit strategy…NYG super bowls may as well have been 100 yrs ago they are going straight to the bottom now.

NYG lack passion, nobody in that locker room is mad its as if they all turned into Eli clones, “aw shucks we are ooooh and sixxxx aw shucks”

Tell you what Hakeem, you can just hang around MetLife and suit up for the NY Jets, we’d be happy to have you and so would Geno!

@eaglelover – at least wiki the guy before you make bold assertions. He had 31 TDs in 2010 and nearly 5,000 yds in 2011.

As for QB turnovers…I guess as a fan of the Eagles and the dog killer, you would know a thing or two about that category.

why do you persist on making fun of Eli Manning? what is this aw shucks nonense? Eli cares. I have seen him cry and get upset over losses and pain over them where the others act like they do not care. Please stop making fun of Eli.
You know you are a true Giants fan when you become ill over them.

  49. bkeating51 says: Oct 14, 2013 11:42 PM

Can’t blame Cowboy and Eagle fans for ragging on the Giants and Eli. Giant fans do the same to them.

But the Giants and Manning still have those two Super Bowl wins and the other NFC East fans can’t do anything about that. ‘Boys and Romo have one playoff win.

I thought that this would finally be the year for the Cowboys to make the playoffs and win a game or two, but it seems like the football gods don’t want it to happen, with Dallas’ incredible run of injuries.

  50. rmc422 says: Oct 15, 2013 9:09 AM

To be honest Nicks can go to a lot of places

Option 1: Patriots due to the amount of injuries the Patriots have he can fit in very nicely

Option 2: Rams they have Tavon Austin who is a young guy and if they can acquire another one they can look pretty dangerous for years to come

Option 3: Jets the Jets have very few options and those options are injury prone i mean Gates and Holmes are both injured at this moment and Hill took a shot against the Steelers he can be the receiver Geno Smith needs.
