Report: Jerod Mayo could be done for the year

AP

So why was Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo’s arm in a sling after Sunday’s win over the Saints?

According to Les Carpenter of Yahoo! Sports, Mayo has a torn pectoral muscle that could end his season.

Per Carpenter, Mayo had surgery on Tuesday.  It’s unknown when he’ll be able to return.

Potentially complicating the situation could be the perception that the Patriots rushed tight end Rob Gronkowski back before he was ready.

There’s still no word on receiver Danny Amendola, who exited Sunday’s game with an apparent concussion.  We reported after the game that cornerback Aqib Talib has a hip flexor strain, and that the injury is not believed to be serious.

If Mayo is done, he’ll join defensive tackle Vince Wilfork as a pair of key defensive players whom the Patriots have lost for the year.

  1. Holy cow that would be a HUGE loss ..luckily LB is a position the Pats are deep at, and a position group that BB spends most of his time with

Talib might be the bigger loss depending how long he’s out for – that guy is like the Revis of their D ..without him, the ripple effect on play-calling and assignments changes drastically

  2. Damn, they’ll be the all-rookie team soon.

Fortunately some of these young guys are starting to answer the call. 2 D lineman replacing Wilfork and Kelly and still beat the Saints? Incredible.

  3. Is it possible for him to return at the start of the playoffs assuming the patriots make it? Could he play with a brace and play through the pain or is that too much?

  4. “Potentially complicating the situation could be the perception that the Patriots rushed tight end Rob Gronkowski back before he was ready.”

I would imagine that is not the case….at all…he tore is pectoral muscle 2 days ago. How is there any complication about rushing him back when it happened 2 days ago?

Does Gronkowski need to be mentioned in every Patriot article?

  5. It would be a tough loss, but they still have Hightower, Spikes, Collins, Fletcher and Beauharnais. Beau looked pretty good in the preseason and he’s last on the depth chart right now.

Still hope Mayo can come back late in the season, he’s been good in coverage this year

Tom Brady has never won a super bowl without a Top 5 defense…Just saying

    ———————————————————-
And neither have the Giants, whats your point?

Regardless, a torn pec is easily spelling the end of Mayo’s season.

I can’t believe this. Talib, Mayo, Wilfork, and Amendola (yeah we all knew he was going down at some point) all out?

Jets actually have a shot to win, but TB and those rookie receivers seem to be getting their act together though.

Pats depth is showing some light though, maintaining confidence.

  7. If that’s the case, then IR him and get him healthy for next year…obviously he’s the biggest part of this defense after Big Vince, but I’d much rather he get back to 100% than have him force himself back and wind up with recurring injuries and complications like Gronk has been having…enormous loss nonetheless and hopefully this report is premature and he didn’t tear his pec

  8. @kperagine

2001 Pats were the 6th ranked defense
2003 Pats were the 7th ranked defense
2004 Pats were the 9th ranked defense

Here was the 49ers defensive ranking the years Montana won a SB
    1981- #2
    1984- #1
    1988-#8
    1989- #3

Rodgers when he won, Packers were the 5th ranked defense

Roethlisberger both times he won it Steelers were ranked #4 and #1

So if you are trying to knock Brady, knock Montana and Rodgers too.

  9. It’s hard to even be surprised down here anymore about any of these injuries. This is a huge loss but not a complete blow.

P.S. – stop riding Gronk, let the man live.

    Wrong.

He has never had a D the was ranked in the top 5 in total D

A couple that were top 5 in points allowed, that’s it.

But you know who els always had a very good team around him on both sides of the ball, Joe Montana.

  11. Football injuries are out of control right now. Seems like there are just more cheap shots by opposing players who are looking to make a name for themselves with attempts to injure. This is becoming a joke. Way too many serious injuries in football lately.

  12. A QB who keeps the other teams’ offense off the field also tends to boost defensive stats.

So, I guess in Eli’s case, it was all Eli, huh?

  13. If it is an eight week injury as being reported, he could be back by Week #14 or for the playoffs.

LB is a strength for NE but you don’t replace Jerod Mayo.

Wonder who is going to replace him on Quick Slants?

  14. “Does Gronkowski need to be mentioned in every Patriot article?”

    It’s either him or Aaronthal.

    Pick your poison.

  15. Another tough loss in the middle of the D. Two Pro Bowl players, Wilfork and Mayo, not to mention TKelly. On offense they lost Hernandez, Gronk hasn’t played yet, Welker for Amendola(who appears to be a train wreck), Vereen gets hurt, Brady has no confidence in anyone, his accuracy isn’t was it has been, among the league leaders in drops, etc, etc.

My point is, the Pats are 5-1 and Belichick is COACHING HIS FREAKING A$$ OFF.

  16. Ok the top 5 d thing is ridiculous. Quarterbacks don’t win rings, teams do. And it has been said more than once, and for good reason, defense wins championships. I’d love to see the numbers on how many teams won the Super Bowl without at least a top 7 defense. All the years we one it came down to a bend but don’t break d and a great quarterback. One couldn’t win without the other. Period. End of story.

  17. Isn’t this the same injury Ray Lewis had about this time last year? If so, I hope Mayo is a fast healer. The Pats are getting thin and too young very fast. With that said, just watch Ninkovich step his game up to all pro level to offset this. And don’t be surprised to see a lot more of the youngster Buchanan. Who is a phenom just waiting for his chance to happen. But yikes! the home team can’t afford too many more of these. We need a bye week pronto.

  18. “Tom Brady had never won a Super Bowl with a white wide receiver.” Awesome. Totally , freaking awesome.

  19. Not a Pats fan, but I gotta hand it to them and Bill. Despite roster losses and injuries, they continue to find a way to win. So far this season, I’d say Bill’s the coach of the year and Tom’s at least 3rd for MVP. (Peyton Manning and Drew Brees) Amazing how they keep on winning sometimes.

Giants defense was 29th in 2011 and the low 20s in 2007. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

  22. Miami has the Dolphins
    The Greatest Football Team
We take the ball from goal to goal
    Like no one’s ever seen
We’re in the air, we’re on the ground
    We’re always in control
    And when you say Miami
    You’re talking Super Bowl

see you in 2 weeks !!!

  23. 3 words…Deer Antler Extract. If Ray Ray can come back from a muscle tear in October to help lead his team to a ring, hoping may can too. He’s the type of guy worth holding the roster spot for if there’s a chance he could be ready for the playoffs.

Except in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Thanks for playing.

The Mayo loss is huge. Tough to replace a guy with his level of productivity. Wonder if Bru has kept in shape. A call to Bristol to check on Superman might be in order.

  26. Get well Jerod!

I remember when Andy Katzenmoyer went down (for good) and young player named Tedy Bruschi took over. Let’s hope there’s a Bruschi about to come out.

Yeah, I know my logic is flawed…Mayo > Katz, but still the principle applies.

    Go Pats!

Another way to say it is: In the final offensive series of SB game Brady never walked off the field without the lead.

So, thanks for furthering the point that Tom Brady is best SB QB…ever.

  28. They need to get some magic Ravens formula that managed to get Suggs and Lewis back from torn ligaments/tendons, faster than most guys come back from broken bones.

  29. The play that Mayo tore his muscle on was the non-call for his hit on a defenseless reciever (Darren Sproles) that was not called even though the much less impactful hit by Malcolm Jenkins earlier in the game was called. So much for consistent player saftey.
