Packers take look at a lot of linebackers

Clay Getty Images

With Clay Matthews gone for at least a few more weeks due to a thumb injury and Nick Perry suffering from a broken foot, the Packers need linebackers.

And so they brought in eight guys who could play linebacker in their 3-4 defense on Tuesday.

The candidates were, per a league source, Victor Aiyewa, Alan Baxter, Demetrius Hartsfield, Jake Muasau, Justin Staples, Aston Whiteside, Brandon Williams, and Lawrence Wilson.

Staples and Whiteside technically were classified as defensive ends, but both have played linebacker.

DJ Smith was pretty good. Probably should bring him back.

DJ Smith was an inside LBer. They are looking at OLBs.

Hopefully AJ Hawk can keep playing the way he has so far this season. Kudos to him and Mason Crosby – 2 guys who took big pay cuts but came back and have performed better than ever.

Getting that list ready if another linebacker drops.

Wish NFL rosters were a bit bigger.

I think the 3-4 Defense might be out the window for a few weeks, especially with the depth on the D-line this year.

The Packers are playing with guys from the bottom of their roster and practice squad. And winning.

We are all very fortunate to witness such extraordinary success.

Packers need to revisit their training and conditioning staff….. Doctors seem to not get it.

As much criticism as the guy has received, it’s only fair to praise the play of AJ Hawk this year.

How does broken bones fall into the laps of training and conditioning staff? The training and conditioning staff can do nothing for broken bones.

    Expect a 4 – 2 – 5 lineup to be used this week.

They should make our players drink a lot more milk and teach ‘em to … to land better or something! gerrh!

Just about all teams are dealing with a surplus of injuries already this season. Read the clips.

Somehow GB fans believe that the Packers are the only team dealing with injuries. GB fans are already lining up their reason for failing to make the playoffs this season.

    ORLY?!?!

Every year the Packers have been injury riddled and have found ways to win. I don’t see any fans making excuses and I am pretty sure the Packers have a decent shot to make the playoffs this year.

Clay Matthews is Irreplaceable, Come On Clay baby we need you back out there… Juss saying, No one has that Drive and Energy that he brings to the field.

Lots of teams have injuries. But no team overcomes them like the 13 time World Champion Green Bay Packers.

Can you tell us what team has more first and second round picks not playing? We’ll wait for ya.

Bulaga, Sherrod, Matthews, Perry, Cobb, Worthy, and Hayward are all first and second round picks that have missed or will miss a significant portion of this season.

Sherrod and Worthy haven’t played in a lifetime it seems.

So how many teams have suffered significant injuries to a group of players of this same caliber?

    Didn’t think so.

And Brad Jones is out as well. I think that when your team loses 3 starting LBs you’re entitled to mention that it makes things sort of tough.
Certainly happy (Jolly, even) that our DLine has been generally stout against the run.

Replacing average players with average players is not miracle work. The Packers have a gimmick, plug and play defense that more teams should try to copy. Clay and Cobb are the only above average players they have lost.
