Patriots put Jerod Mayo on injured reserve

With the word on the street that linebacker Jerod Mayo had surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle yesterday, there was little point in them putting the clamps on people talking about his condition.

So this morning, they went ahead and announced the linebacker was placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

Coupled with the loss of Vince Wilfork, the Patriots have taken a pair of major hits in the middle of their defense. Mayo was their defensive signal caller, and on the field for practically every snap this year.

They signed defensive tackle Andre Neblett to fill his roster spot, but replacing Mayo in the lineup is a much tougher task.

    That’s a real shame, he’s a great player and a good guy.

Man, I’m not a fan of the Pats but those are 2 HUGE tough losses. Hate to see ANY team have to suffer losses at all, but especially losses to players so GREAT.

Brutal. Our defense finally gets good again and we lose 2 Pro Bowlers in Wilfork and Mayo for the year.

But, we had the most injuries in the league from 2003-2004 and got it done. Hoping we can find a way. As long as 12 is standing, we have a puncher’s chance.

Big Vince and now Mayo. It has been a long time since this team lost as many key players as they have this season.

Injuries change the balance of power in the NFL. What was a preseason strength (Wilfork and Mayo in the middle) is now a glaring question mark at best.

When opponents can run the ball effectively, Tom Brady remains on the bench.

No way the Steelers are hurting as much as the Pats on the injury/murder front. The Pats haven’t had their two pro bowl TE’s (Hernandez and Gronk). The #1 and #2 RBs (Ridley and Vereen) have been injured. #1 WR (Amendola) has had the injury bug. #1 and #2 DTs (Wilfork and Kelly). Now Mayo is done. Talib got hurt as well. Hopefully not for a while.

Seems like there are more injuries this year than any other year in recent memory I can remember (league-wide I mean, not just one or two teams)

Add Armstead to the list, he was signed for DL depth in the offseason but has spent the year on PUP I believe.
