As the 49ers inch toward a game against the Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London, the man whose name sounds like a publishing house could soon be entering the NFL’s record books.
Last month, Bethel-Thompson was the third quarterback on Minnesota’s roster. After Josh Freeman signed with the Vikings, Bethel-Thompson was released. The 49ers then claimed him on waivers.
Making Bethel-Thompson’s situation even more compelling is that his 93-year-old grandfather, Wilbur “Moose” Thompson, won the gold medal in the shot put in the 1948 Olympics at Wembley Stadium.
“It was cool to be a part of that, the whole process of being in the same stadium as my grandfather,” Bethel-Thompson told Williamson. “The second thing, it was just a very cool environment.”
Bethel-Thompson will get a second crack at that environment. Unless, of course, the 49ers decide to make yet another adjustment to their quarterback depth chart.
