Case Keenum to start for Texans on Sunday

Keenum AP

Case Keenum has never played in an NFL game, but on Sunday he’ll start at quarterback for the Texans at undefeated Kansas City.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak announced today that the injured Matt Schaub will miss Sunday’s game and Keenum is his starter. Keenum has leapfrogged T.J. Yates, who came in to relieve Schaub last week, on the Texans’ depth chart.

Kubiak said Keenum has impressed him in training camp, the preseason and practice and has earned an opportunity to show what he can do.

“He’s given me confidence through camp,” Kubiak said of Keenum. “He continues to grow. We’re looking for a spark and he deserves an opportunity.”

Kubiak acknowledged that Yates was disappointed to lose out to Keenum, but in Kubiak’s view Keenum is the man who can make a difference for the slumping Texans.

“I didn’t hesitate because I felt like we needed a spark,” Kubiak said.

Keenum, a star at the University of Houston who joined the Texans as an undrafted rookie last year, will need to provide a major spark to give the Texans any hope of beating the Chiefs.

Did Kubes finally wake up and realize his job is on the line?

You can tell by what the players have said this week that they rather have Keenum in over Yates. It’s good to know the coach was listening.

Really this is just to find out if Keenum can be a starting QB in the NFL. Next year I really hope this team has a new HC and starting QB!

Give the guy a chance. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I don’t see any of you people could on the Houston roster so who are you to rip a guy who’s getting his shot if you aren’t any better?

Yikes! What an environment for the kid’s first NFL game…good luck Case!

  13. raymondtx says: Oct 17, 2013 3:07 PM

I think the team will respond…Schaub is a nice guy, but he was bringing the team down with his poor play. I really think he lost the confidence of his team (we know how the city feels), even though they will never say it. Kubiak is the only stubborn one hell bent on making Schaub the starter. At least Case is saavy enough to not throw any pick six’s. Texans win 23-16.

  14. andrejohnsonforpresident says: Oct 17, 2013 3:08 PM

I hope they come out pumped up and crazy for this game. Let it fly but play a good ball game and have some fun. What else is there to do at this point?

  15. xLith says: Oct 17, 2013 3:10 PM

I hope he does well. Take the wheel and don’t let go Case!

  16. geniusry says: Oct 17, 2013 3:14 PM

It would be great if Tebow obsessers would now get the message. Tebow sucks. Teams want nothing to do with him and he will never play QB again in the NFL.

I’d say this is as strong an indictment of Yates as it is of Schaub.

  30. texasdyack says: Oct 17, 2013 3:51 PM

  31. reed20fence says: Oct 17, 2013 3:51 PM

Not entirely fair Kubes. Give the kid his first start in hostile territory against the league’s best defense?

You’re practically setting him up to fail.

  32. trojan33sc says: Oct 17, 2013 3:53 PM

    I guess it’s Case’s turn to throw a “pick 6″ ??!! LOL

  33. boltfansmith says: Oct 17, 2013 3:53 PM

Here’s a hint. Don’t take Houston in office pools or survivor pools!!

  34. mrgdawg says: Oct 17, 2013 3:58 PM

So they’re throwing Case to the wolves and after being destroyed by KC, it’ll be the year of Yates.

  35. afcdomination says: Oct 17, 2013 4:16 PM

KC can stack the box even though the only runs they have given up have been QB scrambles and a few big runs to McCoy and the Eagles. Poe will stuff that all day long.

meanwhile they will send hali and Houston, DJ and Berry on occasion, and will absolutely wreak havoc on the Texans young QB

this is a team at home, in an undefeated season. if it were in Houston, I’d give them more than a fair chance here, but in KC? this looks like a nightmare.

  36. afcdomination says: Oct 17, 2013 4:19 PM

its not like the KC defense is playing lucky football. they haven’t allowed a 3rd and 10 or longer conversion. they lead the league in sacks, defensive TD’s, points allowed. they will make Houston go 80 yards plus thanks to dustin Colquitt.

KC will be beat by a team that jumps ahead and puts up points, that won’t be at KC, against a QB in his first start. prior was having himself a solid season until he ran into the chiefs D, who broke the kid.

  37. ilovefoolsball says: Oct 17, 2013 4:21 PM

From his words I think we can all deduce that Kubiak likes using the word “spark”.

  38. waxthat says: Oct 17, 2013 4:34 PM

KC and KC’s defense is overrated. Yeah I said it. Believe that.

Remember this when Houston goes into arrowhead and beats them with this kid at the helm.

  39. wolfpack152 says: Oct 17, 2013 4:46 PM

Although I agree it is not the most ideal situation for the young QB’s first start – KC hasn’t played too many dynamic teams and the Houston roster has talent – Whether or not they can execute in that loud stadium remains to be seen. Don’t forget KC has to score to win as well and the Houston D is not atrocious.

  40. jjackwagon says: Oct 17, 2013 5:00 PM

“KC’s defense is overrated. Yeah I said it. Believe that.”

Oh we believe you said it. What’s hard to believe is that you are stupid enough to say it & believe it.

    Chiefs D:
#1 in scoring Defense, Turnovers & Sacks

    Numbers don’t have opinions & don’t lie.

  41. mrbigass says: Oct 17, 2013 5:01 PM

TJ is just a less accurate version of Schaub. Case is more mobile than either of them…… And he will need it….

  42. shermtank3 says: Oct 17, 2013 5:16 PM

Time to see what he’s got.

  43. dualprime says: Oct 17, 2013 5:22 PM

KC is way overrated! They’ve beaten the Jags, Raiders, Titans, Cowboys, Eagle & Giants. YES…they beat the teams on their (2-14) schedule but have yet to play a top tier team. Does Andy have everyone excited? Yep! Are the Chiefs the real deal? We’ll see.

  44. kevpft says: Oct 17, 2013 5:33 PM

Game over. This reminds me of Whisenhunt’s desperate switch-flipping at QB in his twilight with the Cardinals.

Yates had some problems last week, but he was rusty. Now he has a game under his belt, and you go to the third string, who will also be rusty, and without any of the experience your #2 guy has?

When you’re down to making a move like this in hopes that KC not having tape on a guy will be enough for you, you’re toast.

  45. eastofmissball says: Oct 17, 2013 5:44 PM

KC. If you win the toss, give him the ball. Swarm.

Texan fans are so cute when they call their head coach Kubes”

And you are so cute from behind a keyboard. 
    Texans fan here:
Admittedly we were somewhat of an obnoxious group over the past few years as the city is a football town & had desperately been waiting for the Texans to become good/relevant. This year has been a meltdown. Having said this, the team has a lot of talent. This league is full of parity so don’t get yourself twisted. The Chiefs are literally the Texans of the past few years…
Top of the “paper” power rankings thru six games. Congrats bro! If that is all you need for swag, “Kubes” can get you there at least 3 or 4 years.

Long season, let’s make witty spins on a fan base’s defensive moniker and have a discussion about what’s cute regarding the snide references we call our dimwitted coach at the end of the year.

We have no allusions of grandeur with regards to our season…if you are a Chiefs fan, 100% know you do.

  47. fmlizard says: Oct 17, 2013 5:48 PM

Anyone have the Vegas odds on another Pick 6 from Case? I would call it at least even money in a first start at Arrowhead.

  48. blogatron2000 says: Oct 17, 2013 6:27 PM

Case Keenum vs. the Chiefs defense…clear advantage Chiefs. Whoever wins the battle between the Chiefs offense and the Texans D will win this game.

Basically the game will be decided by the play of Alex Smith, not Case Keenum.

  49. gjones33 says: Oct 17, 2013 6:55 PM

great move by kubiak….the simple fan criticizes this move for laying him in his first game in a harsh environment…the slightly more complex fan realizes that even though he is being thrown into the fire, this gives case a 2 weeks to analyze his mistakes from his first start, and overall boosts the chances of him being successful in the long term..starting him after the bye assures that he has to make week-to-week adjustments on his own game, which as a rookie is virtually impossible given that he also has to prepare for a team each week like a normal qb…showing him his innate mistakes and then taking a week to fix them lightens the week-to-week load as the season goes on. brave move gary, can’t wait for you to unleash the PA bootleg like its supposed to be run (with a qb that runs a sub 5.0 40-time)

  50. afields815 says: Oct 17, 2013 7:59 PM

dualprime so are the Broncos overrated as well? They played the the same exact schedule but replace the Titans with the Ravens.

Not to mention the Chiefs held the Cowboys and Eagles to both 16 points. That same Cowboys team that put up 48 point to Denver

  51. mdp44 says: Oct 17, 2013 8:15 PM

Wow look at chiefs fans on their high horse. Gonna Lmfao when Keenum comes in and torches your defense. The texans had the #1 defense at one point this year to

  52. RexCanCoach says: Oct 17, 2013 8:20 PM

This is going to be a KC beatdown, if you think otherwise you just ain’t paying attention…

  53. phloorioisanarcissist says: Oct 17, 2013 8:43 PM

Lol. Good luck Texans. Love all the Texan fans rationalizing themselves into a way to winning this game. Making excuses. Reasons why the Chiefs aren’t that good. Rookie QB versus number 1 NFL defense at the loudest stadium in the league? Haha. Am I missing something? Are Texan fans delusional? No way the Texans come out of this with a “W”.

  54. afields815 says: Oct 17, 2013 9:42 PM

Chiefs fans are stating facts. They are the top scoring defense and playing against a qb making his first career start in the LOUDEST stadium in the NFL.

Only chance Keenum will have success is if Tate and Foster can loosen up the defense but I am sure Derrick Johnson and Eric Berry will be in the box making sure those 2 dont get loose. I am not predicting a blowout but I said Chiefs win 17-7

Good call out! No, I don’t believe the Broncos are overrated. Most fans know the Cowboys can score 30 one week, 10 the next. They’re hardly the best barometer for measuring top tier teams. You could flip this around by noting Denver DID beat the team that dropped 48 on them! Chiefs may be the real deal but we won’t know until we get deeper into the season.

  56. texasdyack says: Oct 18, 2013 9:33 AM

I agree it is totally stacked in the chiefs favor. but if ive learned anything in my years of football, the nfl is truly an “any given sunday” league. and that is my glimmer of hope.

  57. rdpitz says: Oct 18, 2013 2:55 PM

Wow KC has beaten teams with a combined record of 11-25. Not played one team with a winning record yet. People with even a 1/2 oz of brain matter are not impressed yet. Sure is a lot of KC chest pounding. Let’s see how KC does against a team with a winning record, whenever that is.

  58. normswifevera says: Oct 18, 2013 10:07 PM

“Let’s see how KC does against a team with a winning record, whenever that is.”

The Cowboys were 1-0 when KC beat them in Week 2.

The Titans were 3-1 when KC beat them in Week 5.

    Try harder.
