Case Keenum to start for Texans on Sunday

Keenum

Case Keenum has never played in an NFL game, but on Sunday he’ll start at quarterback for the Texans at undefeated Kansas City.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak announced today that the injured Matt Schaub will miss Sunday’s game and Keenum is his starter. Keenum has leapfrogged T.J. Yates, who came in to relieve Schaub last week, on the Texans’ depth chart.

Kubiak said Keenum has impressed him in training camp, the preseason and practice and has earned an opportunity to show what he can do.

“He’s given me confidence through camp,” Kubiak said of Keenum. “He continues to grow. We’re looking for a spark and he deserves an opportunity.”

Kubiak acknowledged that Yates was disappointed to lose out to Keenum, but in Kubiak’s view Keenum is the man who can make a difference for the slumping Texans.

“I didn’t hesitate because I felt like we needed a spark,” Kubiak said.

Keenum, a star at the University of Houston who joined the Texans as an undrafted rookie last year, will need to provide a major spark to give the Texans any hope of beating the Chiefs.
