Cowboys remain America’s (favorite) team

0x600 Getty Images

With so many polls currently focused on the Redskins, there’s another poll that centers on the Cowboys.

According to SportsBusiness Daily, a recent Harris Poll shows that the Cowboys remain the most popular team among American football fans.

The Cowboys remained on top since the last time the poll was conducted in 2011, even though the team hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2009.

The Packers climbed from No. 3 to No. 2, with the Broncos shooting from a tie for No. 17 to No. 3.  (“But do they have multiple Super Bowl rings?” Jim Irsay possibly would say, before remembering that they in fact do.)

The Colts, in turn, dropped from No. 6 to No. 19.

Also dropping five or more spots were the Steelers (No. 2 to No. 7), the Redskins (No. 8 to No. 14), the Jets (tied for No. 9 to No. 15), the Falcons (No. 15 to No. 20), the Panthers (No. 20 to No. 27), and the Titans (No. 21 to No. 31).

Significant climbers included the 49ers (No. 16 to No. 8), the Seahawks (No. 27 to No. 12), the Raiders (No. 25 to tied for No. 16), and the Bengals (No. 31 to No. 24).

Holding steady at No. 32 were the Jaguars, who are now 2-20 since Shahid Khan bought the team in early 2012.

All of these are bandwagon moves except for Raiders…SMH

Still looking for a team that I like. For me it’s about which team isn’t embarrassing themselves or failing the hardest. Well I was born with the Lions so I guess I’ll die with the Lions.

  4. filthymcnasty1 says: Oct 17, 2013 2:01 PM

    Congratulations to the Cowboys.

And it’s always nice to see Titletown ranked so high.

  5. rationalthinker82 says: Oct 17, 2013 2:01 PM

They never will be ousted. Cowboys fans can literally be found everywhere. The media (ESPN especially) cannot get enough of covering them. Regardless of whether its 2 or 22 years until their next Superbowl win, they are and always will be America’s team.

    Go boys!

  6. swaggyy says: Oct 17, 2013 2:01 PM

Yeah because Texas is gigantic. It sucks that we have a team like Cowboys as our “favorite team”. And when was this poll conducted? I never got my vote in.

  7. bobbyhoying says: Oct 17, 2013 2:01 PM

It’s the cheerleaders, not the players.

  8. packfanaj12 says: Oct 17, 2013 2:01 PM

This poll was probably taken in Dallas. Whatever helps Cowboy fans sleep at night.

  9. coachkilla6 says: Oct 17, 2013 2:02 PM

Call the Cowboys anything you want. Just don’t call their practice facility in January. There’ll be nobody there.

  10. jwcarlson says: Oct 17, 2013 2:05 PM

2-20 is insane. I honestly feel like any randomly selected person in the country could run a team better than that given that they are surrounded by other “football people”. How can one team be that horrible?

  11. orivar says: Oct 17, 2013 2:07 PM

How many people were included? Also the bandwagon is sad but expected. You win, you draw in more people.

  12. blamatina says: Oct 17, 2013 2:07 PM

Patriots ranked #5? How does anyone outside of New England like this team?

  13. ravanator says: Oct 17, 2013 2:07 PM

This poll also points out one of Americas problems. Everyone knows all the illegals that come to this country become Cowboys fans once they here the term “Americas Team.” Illegals are the only possible way the Cowboys still have this title.

A nice consolation to another mediocre season in the mediocre NFC East. Awesome.

  16. 4ever85 (aka Butch DeadLift) says: Oct 17, 2013 2:11 PM

They should conduct a poll about which fans are the most fanatical.

    My guess:

    Raiders
    Packers
Browns (they’ve sucked for so long, gotta be crazy)

  17. missraiderette says: Oct 17, 2013 2:11 PM

Go figure the Broncos go from 16th when they were 4-12 to #3 when their 6-0… If that doesn’t alone show you that Donkey Nation is fair weather fans you’ve lost your mind. RAIDER NATION stays loyal high’s and low’s. Win’s and loses. RAAAAIDERS!

  18. latrobe21 says: Oct 17, 2013 2:13 PM

As the Rooneys have always said, “We don’t want to be America’s team, we want to be Pittsburgh’s team. I could care less if the polls ranked them at #32 . . . We know what they truly mean to the city and region.

  19. whatjusthapped says: Oct 17, 2013 2:14 PM

Its odd, but if the Cowboys are truly the favorite team, you would think all the profits from merchandising alone would enable them to hire a real GM. That in turn would help them win more and maybe even win a playoff game more than once a decade.

The Cowboys are my favorite team to play in the playoffs, that’s for sure.

  20. ickky says: Oct 17, 2013 2:15 PM

Nobody who is a fan of another local team, cares about the Cowboys.

  21. ronworthdubbs says: Oct 17, 2013 2:16 PM

What I took from this is that either the Colts and Broncos are just horribly fair weather, or Peyton has more fans than both the teams. Probably a combination.

Really, did you not notice the Raiders went from 25 -> 16?

As has already been pointed out repeatedly, the poll is worthless, ALL teams have bandwagon fans. If the Raiders were 6-0, I’m sure they would have moved up to single digits too….I cant believe I just said that without laughing…. :-)

  32. usdcoyotesfan says: Oct 17, 2013 2:31 PM

  34. Go-Hawks! says: Oct 17, 2013 2:35 PM

In 2010, the Seahawks had spot #31.

Popularity doesn’t matter. Wins matter. Start winning and popularity follows. That is shown by all the bandwaggoners jumping on board the 49ers and Seahawks.

I’ve been a Seahawks fan my whole life. I’ve seen them through bad times and worse times. And now, all that waiting has seemed to pay off. Seahawks, under Pete Carroll with Russell Wilson seem to be a winning team. It’s a new sensation for us long time Seahawks fans. And we like it. Go Hawks!

  35. ripster65 says: Oct 17, 2013 2:35 PM

As long as the cowboys are #1 and raking in the $$$, JJ will be fine with their mediocre play.

  36. bobzilla1001 says: Oct 17, 2013 2:35 PM

If that poll were conducted, say, again tomorrow, most of the casuals would pick a new “favorite team” simply because they wouldn’t be able to remember who they had picked the first time they were asked…
There are way more casual fans than real fans who comprise fanbases. Most casuals don’t even know how many teams are in the league. Since the Cowboys are high-profile, they are easily remembered by those who couldn’t name three players, including the head coach, on the entire team.

The problem with this kind of poll is that their is no negative offset for a team being many fans’ LEAST favorite team. Kind of like a net promoter score, this ought to be a net favorite team poll. The Cowboys would not be first in THAT poll.

    American Patriot forever!!!

  51. harvestern says: Oct 17, 2013 3:00 PM

The 2,500 people that were surveyed seems way too low to be accurate, especially when sports allegiance is largely regionally motivated. The top teams might be accurate but the ones in the middle would Change depending on how and where it was taken.

As a ‘Hawk fan who has been through the highs (Chuck Knox, Mike Holmgren, and today) and the lows (Tom Flores, Dennis Erickson, Jim Mora Jr.), of course we’re more popular right now.

Part of it is the quality of the team…yes, bandwagons exist, doesn’t matter who you are….but I also think part of it is the new uniforms.

Older people hate them because they are not traditional, but nearly everyone under 25 I’ve heard offer a comment are wild about them.

Seeing the up/down movement in the poll from year-to-year was very amusing but also predictable. What it says is that there are a lot of bandwagoners who play musical chairs with their allegiance depending on which team is hot in a given year (witness the huge jump in the popularity of the Broncos).

Most people begin following a team as bandwagoners (especially if the team is in a different town) but the key to being a TRUE (vs. fairweather) fan is sticking with that team through hard times. Witness us Raider fans over the last decade.

When the Steelers played Arizona in SBXLIII, a friend told me he was a Steelers fan but rooting for Arizona because they’d never won a Super Bowl. I said, “You’re not a Steelers fan.” He was offended. Sorry. A fan is a FAN. Win or lose. Hell or high water. It doesn’t matter if your team has won a Yankees’ load of championships and the opponent is donating all their winnings to Boy’s Town. That’s your team.

Whether the Steelers win the Super Bowl or go 1-15, I’ll be sitting in the same seat on the wagon when this season ends … just like 10 years ago and 10 years before that and 10 years before that.

This “poll” is pure crap. Travel around the country, regardless of who you root for and with an open mind. The list starts:
    1. Steelers, followed very closely by:
    2. Cowboys. Then it’s a SIGNIFICANT drop to:
    3. Packers
    4. Raiders

Nobody else is even close, nationwide.

They are everyone’s favorite team to hate.

  102. nyneal says: Oct 17, 2013 6:51 PM

I can’t help noticing that the team with one of the most arrogant and egotistical owners, who had to build a ridiculously expensive stadium with that ridiculous screen hanging from the open roof while long time season ticket holders all across the country had to turn in their tickets because they could no longer afford them, finished first in the poll.
Meanwhile, the team owned by its fans rather than a millionaire owner, which plays in one of the smallest markets in pro sports yet has more championships than any other NFL team, finished 2nd.
Jerry Jones is a total buffoon and if this poll is accurate, he had little to do with it. If it weren’t for Jimmy Johnson, no one would have heard of this wanna be celebrity. And instead of that face lift he got, he should have spent the money on a new set of teeth.

  103. mogreenz says: Oct 17, 2013 7:22 PM

One can tell from the comments that many a heart has been broken and dreams shattered by the Dallas Cowboys…would be best to blame your own team ineptitude.

  104. kimbo71006 says: Oct 17, 2013 7:32 PM

I find it interesting that I never see this poll advertised anywhere so I and others can vote.

Where I live, the Cowboys are DEFINITELY NOT America’s team or even close…I call BS on this one…where was the poll taken, when was it available, how could you vote, etc.

I agree wholeheartedly. I have no plans of giving up my seat, either.
However, just because your favorite team goes 1-15. that doesn’t mean you have to like it or are obligated to pretend things are wonderful.
A lot of so-called “fans” don’t understand that. I realize you don’t have that blinded mentality, and that’s the reason you are one of the few respected Steelers posters on this site…

  106. laxcoach37 says: Oct 17, 2013 7:40 PM

This Poll makes sense. It is Fan Base, not winning records or even fans in the Stadiums on GameDay. The Miami Dolphins are in the Top 10 and very popular worldwide. The Cowboys, Steelers, Packers are the elite. The remainder are a huge drop from there and based on geography size (New York, Chicago), but it does go to show how many “fairweather, bandwagon” fans are out there! Unless you are loyal to your home team… I think it is based on who was your favorite Team when you were 9 years old. As a true fan you stay loyal even if they sucked for the past decade.

Report comment. As a fan for over 35 years I agree with you both, but one of you is an optimist with their eyes open the other is a pessimist with their eyes and brain closed. I live in a tourist area that is frequented by a lot of steeler fans and the only thing close is Yankee fans , who are stupid, arrogant , and have the manners of a pig out of a sty.

It pays to follow the link if you want to know what the truth of the poll is.

    1. It’s nowhere near an accurate poll. Harris Interactive did the poll and it’s strictly an online poll. I’d imagine it quite easy to get(pay?) people to go online and support a particular team.

    2. 2577 adults were polled. That would be an adequate number to mean something when the choice is between A and B but it means little when it’s between 32 choices because you can’t weight it for variables like regional representation, economics, and inherent advantage of a large market team has versus a small market team.

    3. It claims to have polled only adults but I voted on Harris polls years ago and was never required to prove I was over 18. I made a statement that I was.

    4. No margin of error was included. I’m guessing the margin of error would be significantly higher than usual given the issues noted in #2 above.

    5. Poll was conducted Sept 18-24 . That would be Weds-Tues following week 2 of the NFL season. Hardly a good indication of fan support for each team. Nearly all respondents would have barely had the chance to see their team play at home ONCE and away once let alone be able to judge the relevance of other teams.

    6. Flawed, flawed. flawed. If you can’t weight the variables and improve the methology of such a poll, it will NEVER have statistical meaning.

  112. jegtx73 says: Oct 17, 2013 11:13 PM

…And this is why they are America’s Team! Love’em or Hate’em you follow them. Actually I think the haters keep them in the spot light the most. Kind of like how OU fans love to purchase UT Longhorn stickers just to turn them upside down. UT appreciates your contribution! THANK YOU TO ALL THE HATERS!

  113. ronniethec says: Oct 17, 2013 11:33 PM

You can’t deny these 3 facts. 1. The Cowboys sell more team merchandise than any other team. 2. Cowboy games on Sunday nights and Monday nights have the highest tv ratings by far. 3. The Cowboys on the road are the biggest draw with the most fans in attendance. Also, they are worth more than any other franchise. They are the most loved and most hated NFL team.

  114. robyesno says: Oct 18, 2013 2:10 AM

latrobe21: As the Rooneys have always said, “We don’t want to be America’s team, we want to be Pittsburgh’s team. I could care less if the polls ranked them at #32 . . . We know what they truly mean to the city and region.
    ——————————————————–
Well said!! In addition, Steeler fans come from all around the country and the world to Pittsburgh to support the Steelers. Just pay attention when they play in opposing stadiums, how they number as many fans as the home team. And go to any city and you’ll find a Steeler bar. I watch many other NFL team games, and the Cowboys are a yawn to me. I’m not interested.

  115. joetoronto says: Oct 18, 2013 4:02 AM

Teams like the Bronco’s, Chiefs, Bungals, etc are irrelevant outside of their own territory, completely irrelevant.

The team in Alaska has fans in and around the Alaska area, but no where else.

The Jags should never have been given a team in the first place.

  116. 1standinches says: Oct 18, 2013 9:53 AM

I do travel around the country 3-4 weeks out of the month and you are half correct.

    1. Steelers. No one has the following that the Steelers have. Not even close.

    2. Packers. There are always Packer’s fans in every city I go to – even in the cities with other NFL teams.

I see Cowboys on par with Eagles and Giants. You see their fans here and there but nothing like Steelers or Packers.

And the Raiders should still be in LA. Whatever happened to your witty “tarp” remarks re: Jacksonville when the Raiders have their ENTIRE upper deck tarped?

Further proof Canadians should stick with Curling and flannel versus American sports.

Not a surprise as the Cowboys have the largest number of casual part-time fans in the NFL. If you took a poll of actual hardcore live and breathe fans/obssessed, Cowboys would barely crack the Top 10.

O.K. folks. Check it out. Just because a team makes a big jump in the poll does not mean that their fans are fickle, fair-weather, bandwagon riding flakes! I can testifuy that Broncos fans are as loyal as a group of fanatics could possibly be. We loved our Broncos even after Pat Bowlen smoked a bad batch of cannabis, went temporarily crazier than a schithouse rat, and hired Josh McDaniels to be the leader of the “Gods In Orange” football team. What it does mean though is that people are finally taking their life sized John Elway poster out of their closets and hanging them in their man caves. Folks, its now O.K. to show your “Orange Pride” and be openly fanatical about the Broncos. There is enough room on this train for all of us to go to New Jersey in February. How ’bout them Broncos!!!
