Broncos won’t (can’t) individually introduce Peyton Manning before the game

AP

It’s still unclear what the Colts plan to do when Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning returns to town on Sunday night, but one thing is clear — Manning will not be individually introduced before the game.

Per multiple league sources, the NFL no longer allows visiting team to introduce specific players.  Instead, the visiting team is now introduced as a group.  The Broncos haven’t requested any type of exemption for Sunday night, and we’re told they don’t plan to.

Thus, while at some point there will be an occasion for the crowd to give Manning his much-deserved multi-minute standing ovation, it won’t happen via the P.A. announcer declaring, “. . . and at quarterback, Peyton Manning!”

The Broncos have twice before introduced specific players who were making their homecomings.  In 2009, Denver brought Dawkins back to Philly for a rollicking reprise of his Weapon X routine.  The Broncos went through a similar experience when safety John Lynch returned to Tampa.

Undoubtedly, some sort of memorable moment will happen, far different than the reception Brett Favre received in Green Bay four years ago.  It definitely won’t happen with Manning emerging alone from the tunnel to be embraced one more time by the throng at Lucas Oil Stadium.

  1. All week the sports media has tried to make much more of this game that it really is. I like that both Manning and Luck have squashed the predictable, lame attempts to change the narrative and create bad blood.

Irsay scratched that itch, but even his own QB probably just rolled his eyes.

  2. No Fun League. Just like when nobody in Baltimore, or any other city, was allowed to wear black cleats to honor Johnny U.

  3. Why does it matter? I have a bad feeling PMs name will be announced enough during the game anyway-as in “touchdown 21 yard pass from Manning to (fill in the blank with 1 of 8 receivers)”

  4. If the league won’t allow it. Then the Broncos and/or the Colts easily get around.

Coordinate so that Peyton is the last one out from the Broncos tunnel.

No rule says he has to lead Broncos out.

That way assuming Peyton had some special music when he played with the Colts it can be cued.

If not, then fans can easily pick him out and cheer as he be the last out.

NBC would be happy too as they can have a camera guy on Peyton and follow him out and not be bunched in with others.

  5. Ugh, this isn’t over yet? Not that I want any type of petty victory moment for Irsay but I really would be intrigued by a Colt putting a major damper on the Broncos season.

  6. Couldn’t the Colts just have Manning run out first without introducing him specifically, give him a few seconds to take it all in, then have the rest of the team go out?

  7. Manning deserves every bit of respect and recognition from the Colts. He gave them more than a decade of being one of the best teams in all of the NFL.

Despite the Colts owner being a complete douche, the fans in that stadium with embrace Peyton back and it’s well deserved and well earned.

And when he probably mops the floor with them, they’ll be reminded of just how great he really is if any have forgotten.

    Suck it Luck!

After manning hangs 4 TD’s on the Colts, he can stand at the 50 year line and give Irsay the finger. Just a thought.

Just one problem with that…..Manning has class.

  10. Manning is great…until the playoffs. He had I think 1 and done playoff runs, most of the time being the #1-2 seed.
As far as losing to the colts putting a damper on the season, losing isn’t as big of a deal to the broncos as it would be for the colts. 6-1 will still be a great record but 4-3 for the colts could be a big confidence blower.
In the end I feel broncos by 17, 45-28.

  11. Why should they? This isn’t American Idol, it’s NFL Football…Manning is just a football player with a giant ego as big as his horsey head…He’s not the best…He only has 1 ring…
    GO SEAHAWKS!

  12. Who cares? Introducing players names before games is way overdone anyway. Especially in the NBA. Just play ball! Manning will get the ovation he deserves anyway when he trots out for the 1st series. Scores the 1st of 6 TDs, and when John Fox pulls him in the middle of a series in the 4th Q (Against Mannings will) when Broncos are up 29 points.

    RAIDER NATION!

  13. No fun league. What does the NFL care? I’d do it anyway and dare that j.o. to fine him for it.

  14. First of all Peyton deserves every cheer that crowd can muster.

Secondly, Irsay deserves the egg on his face and the boot in his ………….

Finally, Peyton doesn’t want the attention. He wants it to be a normal game just like Jacksonville last week or the next week vs. Washington.

  15. After the crap that Irsay has spewed out the last few days Manning should refuse to be any part of anything the Colts have planned to “celebrate” him and tell Irsay to kiss his lily white rear end.

I remember the Colts before Manning when they were usually the worst team in the AFC East. Guaranteed 2 wins a year no matter how much the Pats were struggling in any given year. Manning may not have a great playoff record but he made that team’s success and they never would have gotten their new stadium funded without him.

    Shame on Irsay.

  16. Whatever the fawning over Peyton will happen by the Colts live will pale in comparison to the entire NBC broadcast shoving it down the viewer throats from the pre-game through to the final gun.

Peyton’s a great QB, was in Indy, and has been in Denver for the past 1.5 seasons, but the way he’ll be presented in this broadcast will be as if he’s just returned to the league, not 1.5 seasons into his return.

Eli vs Peyton was a neat moment turned into a media created circus. NBC is likely to have about 6 cameras pointed at him at all times Sunday, and god forbid if they find Irsay in one of the boxes as 7 cameras will be on him.

Wait a sec, I think blackhawks is on to something here. Let’s say Peyton does throw a ton of INTs, and then goes to the 50 yard line to give Fox the finger. But THEN, he rips off his Broncos jersey to reveal his Indy #18 jersey underneath as the Indy crowd goes wild.

It would be the greatest WWE/Football moment in the history of the universe.

  18. They out to all toss their #18 jerseys onto the field in memory of all the high hopes and playoff failures. There were many a miserable winter in Indiana the last 15 years, that’s for sure.

  19. Shouldn’t the title read, “COLTS won’t (can’t) individually introduce Peyton Manning before the game” since the Colts, not the Broncos, are the ones hosting this game? They control the Public Announcer.

Wonder how many Wilson won’t win….

Right…because having a decent offense and no defense wasn’t the problem…

    GO SEAHAWKS!

How many rings have the Seahawks got? I believe the biggest ego in the NFL lives in your secondary, and he’s got some sort of water chicken for a head. AFC West rejects!!

  23. Why would the Broncos want to do something like this anyway? Denver is going to Indy to win a football game, not play “This is your life”.

  24. This will be the first time since 1983 I will root for the Colts and probably the last. How much I hate Irsay for moving the Colts out of Baltimore I hate Payton equally as much.

  25. The Colts should honor Peyton Manning before the game and they need to make it last as long as possible because he is going to light up the scoreboard when the game starts.Pay attention Irsay. They have the betting line on this game at -7 Denver. If you’re the betting type, bet the whole farm on Denver. They will cover those 7 points with ease.Peyton Manning vs. Andrew Luck.Look + learn,Luck.

  26. Irsay will finally get to see what it’s like having Manning on the other side…..should be fun to watch Peyton rack up a forty – burger + on the Colts

  27. This is a must win for the Broncos. Don’t look now Peyton, but the Chiefs are in your face. Just like I predicted. What I didn’t predict, was that these 2 teams might be 10-0 when the play each other. When was the last time 2 teams in the same division were 10-0?

  28. Don’t let me down Peyton. I said the Irsays wouldn’t make the playoffs. And I said the Chiefs were coming to Baltimore. I would rather see the Ravens go to Denver in January than K.C.

  29. Manning played for the colts? The fans here in Denver don’t really remember those days, I think now that Manning heard how the owner of that team really felt about his time there, he probly feels the same way. The colts can blame the owner for getting them smashed this week.
