The Cowboys are all alone in first place in the NFC East after Sunday’s 17-3 win at Philadelphia, and their defense more than held up its end of the bargain in victory.

Dallas, which had surrendered 1,456 yards in the previous three contests, held Philadelphia to just 278 yards.

Eagles quarterback Nick Foles threw for just 80 yards before leaving to be checked for a head injury early in the fourth quarter. Rookie quarterback Matt Barkley’s NFL regular-season debut was a tough one, as he threw interceptions on all three of his possessions.

The Cowboys also did well to slow the Eagles’ potent running game, with LeSean McCoy gaining just 55 yards on 18 carries.

At 4-3, the Cowboys are now a game ahead of the Eagles, who fell to 3-4 in their worst offensive performance of new coach Chip Kelly’s tenure.

Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was picked twice, but he threw a nine-yard TD pass to rookie Terrance Williams to give Dallas its final margin of victory with 9:25 left.

The Cowboys were without top pass rusher DeMarcus Ware, but they sacked Foles three times, with George Selvie notching 1.5 sacks.
