Torn LCL, broken leg will end Brian Cushing’s season

AP

The Texans were fearing the worst after linebacker Brian Cushing was carted off with a left knee injury.

A league source tells PFT that early indications are that Cushing may have torn his lateral collateral ligament (LCL) but that the ACL appears to be fine. Cushing tore his ACL last season and spent the offseason rehabbing that injury.

A torn LCL would not be good news, obviously, and Cushing would likely still need surgery that would keep him out of the lineup. Avoiding a second tear of the ACL in the same knee should make for a better long-term prognosis for Cushing, however.

The source cautions that it is too early for a firm diagnosis on Cushing’s knee, so things can still change as more tests are done and doctors evaluate the result. The Texans have Week Eight off, but we’d guess that there will be updates on Cushing’s status before the team heads off on break later this week.

UPDATE 8:21 p.m. ET: Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports that he received a text from Cushing that said he tore his LCL and broke his leg. Per Glazer, Cushing expects to miss the rest of the season.

  1. That sucks, have nothing but respect for their defense. Was a clean, hard-fought game and wasn’t decided until last 2 min. Hate to see anyone lost for the season…..

  2. Steelers continue to get better.

We’ll make another run at a World Title.

    Everyone knows it.

    You are EXTREMELY jealous.

  3. Hate to see this for a great player. They didn’t win today, but I thought the Texans played with a lot more energy and fire today with Keenum as QB. Matt Schaub earns $10 million next year and $1 million for every game he’s with the Texans. Needless to say we’ve seen the last of Matt Schaub in Houston.

  4. Man….that Houston ship can’t sink fast enough. That defense will take a massive hit without Cush in there. There was a precipitous fall off when Cush left the game against Seattle. On the upside..Keenum looked pretty good. No pick-6’s at least.

  5. Why osnt jamaal charles’ cheap hit being mentioned? He ran square at cushing and dropped his head right at his knee. Cheap and cowardly.

  6. Jamaal Charles by no means took a cheap shot. end that nonsense now. he is just a HB who happens to know how to block, and he is possibly one the best in the league at doing so. tough player that Charles

that said, best wishes to cushing, you hate to see that.

  7. Terrible luck for Cushing and the Texans.

We’re gonna see new rules next season about hitting directly against the knee. Eventually the NFL will become the NFFL, National Flag Football League.

Simple. Because it was a legal hit. It wasn’t cheap. It wasn’t cowardly. It’s business as usual as a blocking back.

  10. All my fellow Texans fan complaining cheap shot need to shut their pie holes. It was a perfectly legal hit. It’s football, not soccer.

Charles is the best blocking back in the league.

He isn’t even close. Jacquizz Rodgers is a better blocking back than Charles. Check yourself.

  12. Hope he doesn’t get busted for HCG again for “working out too hard, or sympathy for his pregnancy, or his non-existent tumor.

  13. A half step sooner or later and it’s your typical blocked LB with no injury. He was hit when his weight was all on his leg. Crappy timing but no cheap shot, it’s football.

And Watt wasn’t hurt, he was tired and they wasted their timeouts. He took, what, 1 play off then was back in there. Some basic football knowledge would serve some of you whining Texans fans well.

  14. Why do Texans fans act as if they actually had a chance with Gary Kubiak in charge of that team.. they will go NO WHERE as long as he’s the coach. NFL fans will get to look forward to hearing Texans fans saying “Wait till next year, We’ll go the Super Bowl next year….”

  15. Please stop whining, fellow Texans fans. That block was perfectly legal. And it wasn’t a cheap shot. Watch ANY running back block on passing downs and you will see them do the same thing. You are embarrassing yourselves. It was an unfortunate and unlucky injury. Period.

rgb2425 – you need to brush up on your football.

  17. What a barbaric sport football is – almost as barbaric as someone cheering another players’ injury. Glad that Cushing (a player that was caught violating the NFL performance enhancing substance policy) was able to chime in on NFL fans before his season ended. Well atleast the Texans gave him that huge deal, oh wait, its not all guaranteed. How barbaric. Barbaric, barbaric, barbaric.

  18. The steroid jokes got old ages ago. And coming from Seattle fans……… really?

There’s not at team in the league that isn’t loaded with PED users. Only ostriches believe otherwise.

The Charles hit was perfectly legal, just like the DJ Swearinger hit on Keller that he was ripped for on here.

    Get better Cush.

  19. OMG…cheap shot…seriously? Have those of you complaining about the block ever even played FB/TB? You always cut the edge defender to get his hands down and create throwing lanes. He came straight up on him…wasn’t from the side or back…quit your crying.

He actually has no idea how to block, not even a clue.

And, as long as we're mentioning cheap and cowardly shots, how about the Houston player who launched himself at a sliding QB, throwing an elbow at the guy's head along the way?
