Report: Cowboys could trade for a running back

Getty Images

The trade deadline comes in only nine days.  With four significant trades already happening during the 2013 season (Trent Richardson to Indy, Jon Beason to the Giants, Eugene Monroe to the Ravens, and Levi Brown to the Steelers), more could be coming.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network suggested earlier this morning that the Cowboys could make a move at running back.  Rapoport explains that the Cowboys have begun to realize that the injury-prone DeMarco Murray isn’t the long term answer at the position. (Which would mean that the Cowboys have become the last ones to realize that Murray lacks the durability to be a franchise-type tailback.)

The most obvious target would be Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew.   Even though G.M. Dave Caldwell has said that Jones-Drew won’t be traded, we’ve reported that he’d be available at the right price.

Speaking of price, the Cowboys could have to scramble a bit to fit the balance of Jones-Drew’s $4.9 million base salary under the cap, given that Dallas currently has $2.2 million in space, according to NFLPA records.

Other names to watch would be, in our estimation, Lions running back Mikel Leshoure, Saints running back Mark Ingram, and Raiders running back Darren McFadden.  Leshoure and Ingram have gotten buried on their respective depth charts; McFadden is in the final year of his rookie deal.

McFadden’s name is the most intriguing of the bunch.  He played at Jerry Jones’ alma mater, and there was plenty of speculation in 2008 that Jones would trade up to pick the former Razorback, who reportedly was the No. 1 pick on the Dallas draft board that year.  (The Cowboys instead stayed up and took Arkansas teammate Felix Jones.)

Whether or not the Cowboys make a move, the clock is ticking.

UPDATE 10:58 a.m. ET:  Ed Werder of ESPN says that two unnamed Cowboys sources haven’t heard that the team is skeptical of Murray, and they have no knowledge of a possible running back trade.

Meanwhile, The Steelers are just trying to trade to get one NFL caliber player on their roster!

  2. pnut87 says: Oct 20, 2013 10:46 AM

What happened to all that “Murray is the next Dickerson” talk from Jerry, anyway?

  3. easyrider1903 says: Oct 20, 2013 10:46 AM

    Ben Tate

  4. kenny2neworleans says: Oct 20, 2013 10:47 AM

Because the obvious answer to replacing a running back who they are realizing lacks durability, is to trade for McFadden!

  5. bjamzz says: Oct 20, 2013 10:47 AM

They’re worried about his durability, and Darren McFadden is an option?! They do know he’s never played a whole 16 games in a single season before, right?

  6. thegeneral7694 says: Oct 20, 2013 10:47 AM

Murray is too injury-prone, so they want to trade for McFadden? Talk about out of the frying pan, into the fire! Trading for MJD would be huge for them, but I don’t see the other guys as being that sinificant of an upgrade….if they can’t get MJD, they ought to stand pat and see who they can get in the draft. IMO, anyway.

  7. beerndrums says: Oct 20, 2013 10:48 AM

You can always get that roid machine from the Vikings too

  8. bossbertozzi says: Oct 20, 2013 10:49 AM

The only guy that would be a healthy upgrade, and could possibly be traded, would be Doug Martin.

  9. drboogerlips says: Oct 20, 2013 10:50 AM

    Or Tate from Houston.

  10. Marv says: Oct 20, 2013 10:52 AM

Good thing Run DMC isn’t as injury prone as Murray… oh wait…

  11. dchetz says: Oct 20, 2013 10:53 AM

I hear Herschel Walker is available…. would be nice for that to come back full circle.

  12. timebandit24 says: Oct 20, 2013 10:58 AM

You people need to read what florio wrote again. He said other options to watch, not players that Dallas is looking to trade for. MJD would be really nice move but no point, they only run 5 times a game.

  13. bigugly2005 says: Oct 20, 2013 11:00 AM

Put Demarco’s heart in any mediocre RB in the NFL and he’d be a hall of famer. I hope he gets healthy and continues his career. Good luck D!

  14. billybenoitlsu says: Oct 20, 2013 11:01 AM

Take Mark Ingram PLEASE !! He’s versatile and can be a receiver , block , run and all….and he’s never hurt , just look at the car fax… Please get him out of New Orleans . As a matter of fact we need nothing in return just take him…

  15. screamingsheep69 says: Oct 20, 2013 11:01 AM

DeAngelo Williams, with J. Stewart coming back.

Two firsts for AP would work. Why let him languish up in Minnesota. And I’m a huge Vikings/AP fan.

  19. wttoolman says: Oct 20, 2013 11:07 AM

C’mon Jerry, bring Spiller to big d!!

  20. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Oct 20, 2013 11:10 AM

This appears to be rumor. But Dunbar is also injured along with Murray, and they could use another RB.

I would look for them to seek a RB for depth more than the main guy since they do have rookie Joseph Randle who they drafted.

  21. mrbigass says: Oct 20, 2013 11:14 AM

Tate would be a good choice. Texans won’t be able to keep him so might as well get something for him.

  22. mrsmell says: Oct 20, 2013 11:14 AM

    Bring in Mojo.

  23. dino2997 says: Oct 20, 2013 11:24 AM

I wouldn’t want anything to do with MJD. Too many miles on him and a bad attitude.

  24. horsepedlr says: Oct 20, 2013 11:27 AM

    take mendenhall. please

  25. ddaveyy says: Oct 20, 2013 11:31 AM

    AP all day 😉

  26. wearethesteelers says: Oct 20, 2013 11:32 AM

    DeAngelo Williams.

  27. geefan1 says: Oct 20, 2013 11:35 AM

Bet the Colt’s would send them Trent Richardson for a first-round pick.

  28. skolvikesskol says: Oct 20, 2013 11:35 AM

    We will gladly trade AP + 2 3rds, a 5th and a 10th in exchange for 2lbs, a cb, an rb, a de, 3 1sts, 3 2nds, 1 3rd and a 6th.

  29. im2fast4you123 says: Oct 20, 2013 11:39 AM

The cowboys ate a second rate franchise and are goin to lose the division to philly. Im not even a philly fan

  30. vikingshipper says: Oct 20, 2013 11:43 AM

Adrian Peterson for Herschel Walker compensation would rebalance the universe.

  31. rickyoung1212 says: Oct 20, 2013 11:53 AM

I’d take one of those big fans used to cool the players off for Ingram.

  32. gdeli says: Oct 20, 2013 11:53 AM

    Vikes send Adrian for who?

  33. geefan1 says: Oct 20, 2013 11:57 AM

I bet the Colts would take a first-round pick for Richardson.

  34. JMClarkent says: Oct 20, 2013 11:57 AM

I’d love to see the Raiders off McFadden, who is in the last year of his contract, for a mid-round pick.

  35. bcajun says: Oct 20, 2013 12:17 PM

    Come get ingram

  36. serkeljerks says: Oct 20, 2013 12:17 PM

    Come on down Mr. A.P.

  37. titansbro says: Oct 20, 2013 12:30 PM

Jones-Drew is a long term solution? He’s close to 30 & already breaking down.

  38. mjhutmkr says: Oct 20, 2013 12:36 PM

Offer Vikings two #1s for Peterson.

He’s from Texas and just what ails Cowboys, no running game.

  39. primetime2 says: Oct 20, 2013 12:37 PM

Let see the cowboys are already 31 million over next years cap. So yeah lets trade for someone else that we are gonna have to give big money too!

  40. mnviking1fan says: Oct 20, 2013 12:57 PM

I thought I read this morning that the Cowboys is already way in the red over the cap for next season, and you believe that you can get A.P.? Alrighty then.

  41. panthernation45 says: Oct 20, 2013 12:58 PM

Ringing Panthers..perfect opportunity to ship out Jonathan Stewart..Love him to death but the injuries are causing him to be dead money.

  44. sb44champs says: Oct 20, 2013 1:56 PM

Actually, the Saints would forfeit a late round pick if the Cowboys would just do is a favor and take Ingram..

  45. jsrdc says: Oct 20, 2013 4:46 PM

Cowboys DOMINATED with their best two D-lineman not in the game, and their starting RB hurt. ZERO excuses, Philly. Great win by Dallas.

  46. war27 says: Oct 20, 2013 6:03 PM

McFadden would be interesting. hey’d need to clear enough space for about 4 mil on his contract but I’m sure if those players named he would come the cheapest in picks.

If I was in the Raiders front office I’d be looking at a 3rd round pick and maybe a conditional pick the following year.

He’s in a contract year but I’m sure he understands he’s not going to break the bank in FA next year. He’ll be lucky to get half of the 6 mill he’s making this year.

  47. radrntn says: Oct 20, 2013 7:48 PM

well , have to love the maybe’s…it creates a lot of buzz about who, and what do you get in return… I would love to see what DMC could do if he actually ever played behind a decent o-line.

  48. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Oct 20, 2013 9:32 PM

cowboys “ate” a second rate franchise will lose to Philly blah blah blah

How that Philly NFC east champ prediction work out for ya? Clown

  49. jknaub45 says: Oct 21, 2013 12:25 PM

I say Maurice Jones-Drew is our best option, I think Randle can be our speed back but we have been lacking the muscle power back ever since barber left so I say give the Jags a 2nd and a 3rd for Jones Drew then drop the linebacker vega

  50. MyTeamsAllStink says: Oct 21, 2013 4:06 PM

Please Oakland make this deal!Hell take a 7th rounder just get something in return for that dorito boned McFragile!

  51. war27 says: Oct 21, 2013 4:31 PM

Jag’s are gonna want a 1st and more for MJD.

If Richardson’s 60 yards a game was worth a first why would Jax expect any less for their one of very few players that can push ticket sales?

  52. camarocowboy51 says: Oct 22, 2013 9:27 AM

Ian Rappaport has been wrong in the past many times about what the Cowboys are gonna do.Good running bcks are a dime a dozen. They are happy with Randle don’t have enough money to make any moves and are probably gonna let Demarco go next year and draft another good running back out of college. For the next few years there will be good to great running backs that will be in the draft.Cowboys must get younger because next year they will be in Cap Hell.

  53. kibblesnvick says: Oct 22, 2013 11:59 PM

Yes, trade for a one back with durability issues for another back with even worse durability issues. Wait, what am I saying, it’s Jerry Jones we’re talking about here.

  54. dasmol says: Oct 23, 2013 12:51 PM

When reading this story, McFadden got hurt…feelings.

  55. twelsh36446 says: Oct 23, 2013 6:17 PM

Wish they would trade for Leshoure, and we got Dez Bryant.

  56. cfrazier5 says: Oct 29, 2013 1:46 PM

Cowboys should just trade every single one of their draft picks for Adrian Peterson, it’s not like Jerry Jones will put any of those picks to good use anyways…
