Washington earns second win in wild 45-41 triumph vs. Chicago

Chicago Bears v Washington Redskins Getty Images

In a game dominated by the offenses and filled with big plays, the Redskins edged the Bears 45-41 at FedEx Field on Sunday afternoon.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III threw for 298 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Washington, which took the lead for good in the final minute on a three-yard TD run from Roy Helu Jr. The score was Helu’s third of the game.

The Bears (4-3) lost starting quarterback Jay Cutler to a groin injury, but replacement Josh McCown was strong in relief, completing 14-of-20 passes for 204 yards, including a TD pass to Martellus Bennett that gave Chicago a 45-41 lead with 3:57 left.

However, Washington responded with the game-winning 80-yard scoring march. Griffin connected with rookie tight end Jordan Reed for receptions of 26 and 10 yards on the drive, with the latter a key third-down conversion. On the next play, Helu scored the deciding touchdown for Washington (2-4).

Reed led Washington with nine catches and 134 yards. The Bears, meanwhile, got 91 yards rushing and three touchdowns from tailback Matt Forte. They also scored on a 81-yard Devin Hester punt return. The Redskins had a return TD of their own, with Brian Orakpo returning a deflected pass for a score in the second quarter. Washington also scored on a 45-yard Griffin-to-Aldrick Robinson TD pass in the fourth quarter.

The Bears’ final touchdown came one play after Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather was penalized for a personal foul for the second time in the game. He made forearm-to-helmet contact with Bears wideout Brandon Marshall on an incomplete pass. Earlier in the game, Meriweather was flagged for a helmet-to-helmet hit.

Cutler suffered his injury when sacked in the second quarter. Bears linebacker Lance Briggs (shoulder) and cornerback Charles Tillman (knee) were also hurt in the loss. Redskins safety Reed Doughty suffered a concussion.

Thank You GOD for making me a Redskins fan!!! This is why I root for this franchise. Pound for Pound we are the BEST TEAM IN FOOTBALL! We are the most resilient group under the most calm, cool and collective Head Coach and QB since Joe Gibbs and John Elway respectively in Mike Shanahan and Robert Griffin the 3rd. There is no doubt in my mind we are going to represent the NFC in the Superbowl next February at Metlife. The only question remaining is who will come out the AFC to lose! Don’t let the record fool you…remember my words! I like the Redskins, never give up! Burgundy and Gold Beat Number two of the season. Next victims are the Broncos! #WatchoutDenverherecomesthemightyWashingtonRedskins

  4. babyjebus says: Oct 20, 2013 4:54 PM

welp, we have flipped our problem. now we have a pretty good offense and can’t play defense.

  5. wholelottaawesome says: Oct 20, 2013 4:56 PM

Redskins have a very poor defense and continue to struggle in special teams. Their best weapon may well be a rookie tight end. Kinda pulling for the bears there at the end. It was fun to see some jv kids get some time and play well against the skins starters.

Not a fan of either team, but CHRIS CONTE has to be the absolute WORST player I’ve ever seen at the professional level.

I feel like he was at fault for every one of the Redskins’ passing TDs. It certainly seemed like that.

Lost my voice watching this game. I was sure they were going to find a way to lose this one. Meriweather needs to go! Wish we had another safety to replace this idiot. We will have to replace him when the league suspends him anyway. Jordan Reed is the real deal. LB’s or Safeties cannot match up with this kid. RG3 looked shaky early, but composed himself to have a decent game. Need to keep feeding Alf the rock, especially when we go into Denver next week. I may have to do some yard work during that one. It could get ugly quick in that one.

  16. snaponrules says: Oct 20, 2013 5:13 PM

Been a Bears fan for over 40 years and have never seen a worse defends then this one. Since the start of the year any team can drive the length of the field with ZERO resistance. Its to the point of getting embarrassing.
Still good job to the redskins on the win.

  17. stevejjones says: Oct 20, 2013 5:13 PM

Yes Conte sucks. Yes he shouldn’t be out there. That’s why the Bears drafted a replacement who ended up with neck injury and is out for the year from the preseason. He is Chicago’s version of Reed Doughty. An awful player you get stuck with because everyone else gets hurt. He was the victim of every TD. At this point a guy of the street would be better. Steltz can’t be the guy. Too slow

Hat tip to Skins, who won fair & square, but Conte needs to be cut. How can the Bears run “Cover 2″ defense when the safety doesn’t “cover”? This guy has been getting burned all season long.

2 mediocre teams play a meaningless game for both of them, neither deserves to win but someone will and does. Why the Bears got rid of no offense Lovie and then hired no defense Trestman is beyond me but look for another 8 and 8 Chicago season. The worst thing is that Josh looked better than Culter but menaingless when it comes aginst the Skins.

PS The Bears could sign the Pope as their back-up back-up QB and we’ll still have an 8 and 8 season but we will ignore Tebow again so in addition to another lousy season record and blogging about same it will be all about sour grapes for year 6 in a row. What is really crazy is Irsay complaining about Peyton and his time with the Colts.

Bears were 6 and 1 at after 7 games last season. Now 4 and 3. What did we get by letting Lovie go? Looks likes not much with more lousy weather predicted ahead and we still haven’t played Green Bay at all. Just ask Trestman for at least one win this season against Green Bay and then hope for a dive so we can work on drafting for the D-line and LBs.

Chicago media will be full of “things aren’t over yet” and “Josh showed he’s got the stuff” and “it was the injuries” while anyone who watched the game on defense before the injuires knows it’s lights out against good offensive teams.

  65. roachyxxx says: Oct 21, 2013 7:45 AM

Cutler’s injury was due to a sack that the NFL will attach a fine to. Rolling a guy over like that is just an attempt to injure him, and it worked. And Chris Conte makes some good tackles–after the guy has matriculated 10 or 15 yards down the field.

  66. thompsonway says: Oct 21, 2013 8:50 AM
