The Buccaneers are holding out hope that running back Doug Martin will play again this season, but they made a move on Monday that acknowledges the need for help in the backfield until they know Martin’s outlook after Sunday’s shoulder injury.
Running back Bobby Rainey was claimed off of waivers from the Browns. He’ll join Mike James and Brian Leonard as running back options with Martin out of the lineup. Jeff Demps could be another option at some point, but he’s recovering from groin surgery at present.
Rainey spent time on the Ravens’ active roster and practice squad last season after going to camp with the team as an undrafted free agent. He didn’t play in any regular season games, however, and wound up with the Browns after failing to make the Baltimore roster this summer. Rainey had 13 carries for 34 yards and four catches for 19 yards for the Browns in six games this season.
The Bucs waived wide receiver Skye Dawson to clear a roster spot for Rainey.
