Cowboys add Marvin Austin to bolster line

AP

The Cowboys are struggling to keep healthy defensive linemen on the field, so they turned to a guy who has struggled to stay healthy and on a field.

The team announced they signed defensive tackle Marvin Austin.

Austin was a second-round pick by the Giants in 2011, but he sat out his rookie year because of a chest injury, after sitting out his 2010 season at North Carolina because of an NCAA violation.

He played eight games with the Giants last year, but was released in final cuts and had a cup of coffee with the Dolphins.

The Cowboys have been in flux up front since the offseason, with Jay Ratliff never getting on the field and Anthony Spencer on injured reserve. Throw in a short-term injury for DeMarcus Ware, and they have a lot of money tied up in linemen not playing.

  1. After signing his new deal, Austin was so excited that he fist pumped.

He’ll be out four to six weeks with a partially torn pectoral.

  2. The book on this kid is he doesn’t have the ‘want to’ to do what he has to do t be a good player. Maybe Marinelli can get through to him. I hope so because this kid has all the tools, just not the desire.

  3. I thought this kid was going to make the Giants roster. They probably should have kept him and gave him a chance over Patterson and Rogers who are both terrible.

Could be a solid pick up if he wants it. This is probably his last chance.

  4. I love this pick up, Marvin Austin was projected to be a lottery pick before getting the violation his Sr. Year. I was mad when the midgets picked him up and with the plethora of talent they had over there (I say that loosely of course) he was the odd man out with Pierre “water” Paul, Osi “fragile” omenyura, Justin “fetal position” tuck and Chris “benidict Arnold” Canty…. His knock is a questionable motor;well there is somthing about being on your last chance to inspire performance. Coupled with the fact Marianelli wanted this dude out of college speaks volumes; rod has proven time and time again that if he see somthing in you then most likely it’s there! Granted we got allot of guys off the streets but they are all hungry and eager!

  5. Also Bruce Carter a college teammate and close freind; I think a familiar face is a place conducive to his improvement will work wonders for this kid. He fits into the rushman’s principles of penetration and QB pressure to a T! After watching my old man Die (jay ratliff) I welcomed a new baby (Mario Austin) the Lord taketh and the Lord giveth as well. God bless America’s team!

  7. Keep trying to talk yourself into him. He literally came out and said that he cares more about music than football. He only showed up for the check so that he could go and concentrate on music like Dhani Jones went aloof.

  8. First Selvie, now this guy? Low risk? Playing on a defense with a bunch of help with Dware returning? A Defense that held the ranked 4th Offense TDless? Welcome to Dallas with open arms Austin. I believe you will be a steal in Jerry’s Land.

  9. He could care about underwater basket weaving more than football, he’d still be better than 75% of the rest of the NFCE’s DT’s.

  10. I love this pick up. Being from NC and a huge UNC fan I loved this kid. He was a complete stud on a very talented d-line his several years at the hill. Rod will get him to work, just like Selvie.
