Falcons expect Steven Jackson to practice this week

The Falcons snapped a three-game losing streak against the Buccaneers on Sunday without getting much from their running game.

Jason Snelling and Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 30 yards on 15 carries, which didn’t provide the offense with much balance. Snelling and Rodgers may not be the only options available to coach Mike Smith in Week Eight, however.

Smith said Monday that he expected Steven Jackson to return to practice this week after missing the last four games because of a hamstring injury.

“This is all based on what the doctor will say in terms of how much he’ll participate in practice as we go through the week, but when we left out of here on Friday, everything was very good in terms of testing and the opportunity to return to play,” Smith said. “We are anticipating to get him in and see how he handles it. You’ve got to go in and take it one day at a time when you’re coming back from an injury.”

Any talk about Jackson’s chances of playing against the Cardinals is premature before he’s even officially made it back to the practice field, but the sooner the better for a Falcons team that’s been hit with injuries all over the offense.

Smith had less to say about wide receiver Roddy White, who missed a game for the first time in his career on Sunday. Any updates on the condition of White’s hamstring will have to wait until later in the week.
