Jay Cutler will miss at least a month with groin tear

cutler Getty Images

While there are season-ending injuries in other cities, the Bears have now taken a pair of major blows today.

The Bears announced that quarterback Jay Cutler will miss at least four weeks with a torn groin muscle, after the previously reported four- to six-week absence of linebacker Lance Briggs.

The Bears have traditionally floundered when Cutler’s been absent, as evidenced by their 2011 collapse from 7-3 to 8-8.

Backup Josh McCown played well yesterday, but there’s a signficant drop-off there, one the Bears will struggle to recover from at a time their defense isn’t playing well.

It also complicates the financial decision the team has to make. Cutler was allowed to go into the final year of his contract without an extension, and this doesn’t help them decide whether he’s going to be their guy for the long term.

Well, McCown looked better than Jason Campbell or Caleb Hanie yesterday. That isn’t saying much though.

Hey horton…McCown looked better than Cutler dude. You really think that bum would’ve thrown up as many points?

If the answer is yes then you’ve never watched Cutler play. It was a matter of time before MeAngelo picked him off.

  6. comeonnowguys says: Oct 21, 2013 1:42 PM

    And… season.

At least Chicago fans get to watch the Blackhawks repeat this year.

  7. harrisonhits2 says: Oct 21, 2013 1:42 PM

Hope the players are enjoying the extra time off the new CBA gives them from offseason workouts.

Because the lower level of strength and conditioning that seems prevalent throughout the league this year has led to more serious injuries than I can ever remember in any season in over 40 years of watching the NFL. I believe that can be tied directly to reduced offseason workouts.

  8. edelmanfanclub says: Oct 21, 2013 1:43 PM

McCown posted a 119.6 rating on the WORST secondary. He’ll be alright but I think Chicago is destined for 3rd place because of him and their deteriorating defense. How many years has Cutler gotten hurt and crushed and subsequently ended their season?

  9. f0rem4n says: Oct 21, 2013 1:44 PM

Lion’s fan here, tough break brothers of the North. Never want to see anything but an opponents best and if we play you without Cutler it just won’t feel the same.

It’s really too bad the Bears have had so many injuries this year. This is probably one of, if not their last year, of being able to compete for a while thanks to a quickly aging defense. Injuries Melton, Williams, Collins, Briggs(probably the worst of them all) and Tillman to some degree have decimated the defense. It’s really a shame too because the offense seemed to have figured it out. Then of course there’s Culter going down which is going to kill the offense. The bears do have a somewhat favorable schedule after the Ravens game in a weak NFC but asking them to stay afloat for that long will most likely prove to much I hate to say.

If he really has a Torn Groin this is gonna be much longer then 1 month! Are you kidding me, try running around with a torn groin, good luck! Put a fork in it, the Vikings and Lions will finish with better records then the Bears now!

  14. trollaikman8 says: Oct 21, 2013 1:50 PM

Didn’t watch the game. Did Cutler come back onto the sideline and mope around for 2 quarters?

  15. wjarvis says: Oct 21, 2013 1:50 PM

Not sure is McCown is better than Hanie or Campbell, but the offense will probably be more successful. The bears offense line and receivers are much better now. Unfortunately, the defense has been horrible so unlike Hanie and Campbell the offense has to win games instead of not lose games.

  16. supremecomander says: Oct 21, 2013 1:50 PM

This is worse than the Sam Bradford injury. Whose with me?

  17. dtownsportslions says: Oct 21, 2013 1:50 PM

As a Lions fan, I love the battles with Detroit and Chicago. It won’t feel the same without Cutler and the inevitable Suh sack. Get better Jay, one of the misunderstood athletes in sports.

  18. whitecastleisafoodgroup says: Oct 21, 2013 1:50 PM

In the long run it really doesn’t matter. With healthy Briggs and Tillman the Bear’s defense was still terrible. We weren’t going anywhere even if we made the playoffs. Coughing up 30-40 points each week does not make you a playoff caliber team.

Losing Cutler sucks because he was doing well (here come the haters) under Trestman. Hope all our guys get on the mend.

Time for the young guys to get real playing time.

  19. dontcensormebro says: Oct 21, 2013 1:52 PM

Unfortunately, even if Cutler was ok we’d still get our behinds handed to us due to this absolutely horrific defense.

Even though no one is running away with the NFCN, it looks like the Bears yearly tradition of slipping on a banana peel and missing the playoffs is not going to be broken.

  23. vicnocal says: Oct 21, 2013 1:58 PM

Well, as a Bears fan, at least now this frees me up to do something more productive with my time on Sundays. Though I still can’t figure out just how exactly he got injured on that seemingly harmless play.

Oh yeah, and the Bears defense is absolutely putrid, maybe the worst in the league. How things have changed.

  24. beedubyatoo says: Oct 21, 2013 2:00 PM

  27. coachkilla6 says: Oct 21, 2013 2:06 PM

I thought duh Bears always get to 7 wins before the collapse begins. Looks like they’re starting early this season. The injuries only serve to cover up the inevitable.

  28. mvp43 says: Oct 21, 2013 2:07 PM

Not a Bear fan, but this has got to suck. Cutler finally looked like he was embrasing this new system and now this. McCown looked okay, but give any NFL team a week to prepare, and that will change quick.

  29. nflpoker says: Oct 21, 2013 2:09 PM

Only the Jags and Giant with a combined 1 win between them have given up more points than the Bears. Get Lovie on the phone as I think we are still paying him. Looks like it might be too late to call Tim T. but at least then we would have something interesting to post and argue about after the standard Bear loss.

Call Mr. Hanie please but no matter what we do Giants and Jags will draft ahead of us.

  46. truths4all says: Oct 21, 2013 2:41 PM

For real Bears fans, now will be the opportunity to see if Trestman can work some real magic with McCown who has a serviceable, but undistinguished track record.

If McCown can raise his career level performance with Trestman’s tutoring, then the Bears may yet be competitive and the season remain interesting.

As for the defense, let’s see who rises to fill the gaps and perform on game day.

  47. mikebrownbears30 says: Oct 21, 2013 2:45 PM

Time to find a “Rich Gannon” for Trestman to guru like he did in Oakland. A journeyman QB who had a few starts with moderate success but had been classified as a career backup with no expectations for strong performance on a consistent basis. Wait, couldn’t that be Josh McCown or Jordan Palmer?

@blackandbluedivision, it will be no-brainer. That’s for sure.

  53. realitypolice says: Oct 21, 2013 3:33 PM

Maybe someday someone in the Bears front office will begin to take the position of back up QB seriously.

I mean, you have a QB who gets hurt sometime. Is it really a good idea to sign guys like Caleb Hanie and Josh McCown and say “Yup, we’re good here”?

  54. vicnocal says: Oct 21, 2013 3:40 PM

realitypolice: They thought they had it shored up last year with Jason Campbell, who stole like $4million from them and was an absolute bum.

  55. willbow5253 says: Oct 21, 2013 3:50 PM

This is so weird! If this offseason taught me nothing else it is that only running QBs can (and will!) get injured.

  56. wnstonchill says: Oct 21, 2013 4:10 PM

WE Bear fans need to relax and look at things as they are. Marc Trestman wasn’t brought in here as head coach to win a championship his first year. He was brought in here this year, rather than next year to make sure the org. doesn’t make a 20 million dollar mistake, just in case Cutler wasn’t going to worth investing in for the future of this team. It makes sense. They went out and found huge pieces on the offense to put around Cutler to make sure he had all the tools he needed to succeed. This would explain why there wasn’t much if any upgrading done on the defense last offseason. They knew the defense was in decline, but didn’t have the resources to re-build both sides of the ball in one year.
Here’s something I think will shock alot of Bear fans…… the offense won’t freefall without Cutler behind center! Trestman’s system is designed to take what the defense gives you. No forcing of the ball downfield if it’s not there. Cutler did alot of that. McCown won’t! McCown will spread the ball around to everyone and the offense will maintain. The problem is on the defensive side and it’s not going to get remedied this year. I’m good with that, knowing Phil Emery has a game plan down for the future and he’s brought in a coach who’s capable of seeing it through. The Bears will be okay!

  57. isphet71 says: Oct 21, 2013 4:16 PM

The NFL has determined that Cutler’s injury was a direct result of a hit he sustained from Suh. Suh will be fined 50k for Cutler’s injury.

  61. whatjusthapped says: Oct 21, 2013 4:58 PM

Is it just me or did it appear that McCown was the better of the two Qb’s yesterday?

I realize Cutler had the starting gig but that’s just because the Bears trading away a small fortune thinking they were getting a franchise QB in return, he’s been everything but.

Now the injuries on their defense are a big concern but Cutler is not as big of a loss as you might think, wait a few weeks and McCown is going to change some minds.

They say the Great Wall of China took about 1500 years to complete. I’m looking for a similar timeframe on the Bears rebuild with Trestman.
