During his Monday press conference, Packers coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that tight end Jermichael Finley remains in the hospital after suffering a neck injury in Sunday’s game against the Browns and that doctors are still doing tests to learn more about what McCarthy called a “significant” injury.

McCarthy said there’s not enough information about the injury at the moment to start thinking about anything having to do with football. Earlier on Monday, Tom Pelissero of USA Today reported that the Packers expect it to be weeks before they’ll know enough to talk about when Finley might be back in the lineup. McCarthy did have some positive news to pass along about how Finley’s doing in terms of his recovery right now.

“He’s up and performing daily activities, and he’s in good spirits,” McCarthy said, via Jason Wilde of ESPNWisconsin.com.

McCarthy also was asked whether he thought the hit by Browns safety Tashaun Gipson that injured Finley was a dirty one. The coach said he thought it was “two guys playing football,” which differs from the read of the officials who flagged Gipson for the hit. We’ll see what the league thinks when it comes time to hand out fines.

That’s a far less significant issue than Finley’s health, though, and it’s good to hear that Finley appears to be out of any immediate danger on that front.
