Jets activate David Garrard, cut Brady Quinn

David Garrard (9) talks to Reggie Bush AP

The Jets made it clear they were interested in having David Garrard around as a mentor, no matter how long it took.

The team announced they had activated the veteran who was brought in two weeks ago on a roster exemption, and released Brady Quinn to make room for him on the 53-man roster.

The Jets brought the 35-year-old Garrard in early this offseason, when Mark Sanchez was still a factor and before Geno Smith was drafted.

But his traditionally bad knees forced a brief retirement, before he got some rest and decided to give it another shot.

Given his health in recent years (he hasn’t taken a snap since Dec. 26, 2010), it’s hard to imagine him as anything but a clipboard-holder, though he’s been a pro and should be a good influence on Smith.

    What team in their right mind would cut a serviceable player, Quinn, to keep a clipboard holder. Right, the Jets. They do know that Smith could get hurt at some point, right?

    Garrard should be ready to play again. So how many teams is that for Quinn? 20 or so, should be a record.

    St. Louis may as well sign him. Sometimes the third time’s the charm.

    Monster win? Both teams exhibited some ugly ugly football. It was a monster disgrace for both teams each had multiple chances to win

    Matt Simms did a great job in the preseason and deservedly got a roster spot. Will Simms or Garrard get the 2nd spot behind Smith?

    @hawkforlife..
    Quinn was 3rd string, Matt Simms is the backup, Garrard is there to be the teacher not a player so nice try at your shot at the Jets you obviously watch a lot off Espn.. wait a minute is this Manesh ??

    Only the Jets would waste a roster spot on a teacher! Why don’t you bring Namath back, too. At least HE won something. Let’s see…how long ago was that? Oh yeah…hahahaha. No wonder J-E-T-S means Just End The Season.

    @sbmcintosh36

    No, I watched Quinn during the spring and he was pretty good. He’d still be a Seahawk if the Bills hadn’t screwed over Jackson.

    No matter, the Jets need a QB not a clipboard holder. I doubt from watching that Smith needs a failed QB as a mentor.

    Simms has put in a lot of work, improved a lot and I think Rex will give him his shot if the situation arises.
