Marcus Sherels brings some excitement to a dull Monday night

AP

In what may be the worst Monday Night Football game ever, it was Vikings punt returner Marcus Sherels who provided somee excitement.

Late in a first quarter that featured few fireworks, Sherels took a punt along the sideline and raced 86 yards for a touchdown. It was an outstanding return in which Sherels showed both impressive speed and the intelligence to wait for his blocks in the open field. He finished it by running through an attempt at a horse-collar tackle by Giants punter Steve Weatherford.

The Giants have been giving up long punt returns all season, so it’s no surprise that Sherels added another one. This team’s special teams are a mess.

Before Sherels’ big return, not a lot had transpired. Giants quarterback Eli Manning engineered a long drive but had to settle for a field goal on the Giants’ first offensive possession, and Vikings quarterback Josh Freeman managed to lead Minnesota to one first down before having to punt.

Giants center David Baas limped off the field with a knee injury, adding yet another injury concern to a lousy Giants season.

  1. One of the problems with the Vikings is that they aren’t very good at football. I think it might be because their fans are horrible human beings, and they’re being punished by a higher power.

    I literally LOL’d at that!

  3. filthy, Viking fans are dedicated to their team.
I assume it’s easy to bandwagon cheese bay because of a long history before your time. Not to mention, buy a piece of “stock” & you’re an “official” fan.

  4. Are you glad they signed Freeman, his accuracy is so much better than Ponder and Cassel. (NOT)

There is a reason there are OTA’s and training camp. Its stupid to think that a QB that has been with the team less than 2 weeks has a better chance to win any ballgame than the 2 already on the roster. Even if the 2 are Ponder and Cassel. But stupidity seems to run rampant thru the entire organization, from the GM that drafted Ponder to the coaches that started Freeman.

  5. According to the brilliant John Gruden Jamarcus Sanford returned this punt for a touchdown! I demand you change the title of this topic.

  6. Well, I thought this would happen.
Freeman sucks, no big surprise there.
Unless he somehow get’s it together this second half.
    Doubtful.
Still a vikings fan, will always be one.

  7. It’s funny how much better Vincent Jackson has been doing since freeman got kicked off the Bucs. I’m starting to think that maybe Schiano wasn’t the problem…

  8. Wow. Freeman has had a few practices with the Vikings receivers and is not on the same page. Shocker!!!

I’ve been watching Ponder overthrow his WR’s all year. Or even underthrow. I’ll take my chances on a more mobile strong armed Freeman.

  9. The first game of the season, Minnesota looked pretty good. I am reminded of reality every week as a Lions fan. Detroit is good…but we can make any team look much better than they really are.

  10. Uh, penalty makes the run back sort of tainted. No matter. Still one of the most amazing demonstrations of bad football ever witnessed.

    Move both teams to London.

  11. Dear Aaron,
I see now that I was wrong; the Packers way is the best. Can I please come back? Apparently the forward pass is new around here.
    Love, Greg

Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer were Packers fans.
    ——————————————————

In spite of the extreme heinous nature of their crimes they both were, dare I say, great at what they did.

So if both Gein and Dahmer were Packer fans, can you blame them? It’s really just greatness admiring greatness. A mutual admiration society.

  13. Wow, Freeman looks terrible. Wouldn’t it be funny if they put ponder in, he got the win, and cost the Vikings a shot at drafting a franchise QB? Just like Webb did? That would really be funny.

  14. Well if this is “worst Monday Night Football game ever” wait until the Week 14 Thursday Night Game.

But I will still be there getting drunk!

Hmm….. One team has sold out their stadium since 1960, even during a horrible stretch during the 1980’s. The other team barely avoided a blackout of a home playoff game as early as 4 years ago.

You tell me which team has the bandwagon fans and which are more loyal. Hint: it’s not the Vikings.

  16. i normally don’t go for blame the coaching but this is clearly a problem for the vikings.

they have absolutely no use of the talent on their team. and they have talent. they just don’t know what in the hell to do with it.

starting 4 different quarterbacks in 4 weeks is not a recipie for success. it’s like that year when we had brooks bollinger starting…and kelley holcomb. and gus ferrrote and tavaris jackson and good god there is the problem.

please just move this team to LA. we’ll take the jaguars in a couple years. minnesota needs a clean break from the vikings.

  17. Dull?? I’ll tell you what’s dull. Our O-Line! They couldn’t block for a school quarterback, if given the chance!!!

  18. The Vikings Have never been blacked out, don’t remember that.
    The “Problem” Here is,
    A) Bill Musgrave
    B) Alan Williams
    C) Leslie Frazier and
    D) The QB’s, terrible

  19. I knew the vikings offense couldn’t score.

I know the vikings will screw up their draft picks next year.

The vikings have won only 20 games in the last 4 seasons.

It has been 27 years since Tommy Kramer and the vikings still haven’t found a long term QB solution yet.

Its to bad these guys were Packers fans, because if they were Vikings fans they would have killed them selves!

  21. Dear Greg,
You were probably right about me. I’m just not good with my teammates. Good luck with Pondercassellwebbfreeman. See you next week.
    Love,
    Aaron

  22. One more time, tell me why it’s Ponder’s fault?

Is it Ponder’s fault the coaches can’t get the team ready for a game?

Seriously, when do the coaches head’s begin to roll?

With Polian out there, how long is Spielman’s leash?

What excuse does anyone have for listless performance they put on tonight?

  23. As a Packer fan, I usually enjoy watching our rivals struggle. But I’m almost at the point of feeling sorry for the Vikings. On the bright side for the Vikings, it looks like they’re “on the clock”.

Who’s team has a winning record!! BOOM!!!!!!

  25. I have a question id like answered by viking fans who watch tgem every week. is frazier and his coaching staff that bad and whats happening to your team? i want our division to be better than what ive seen this year.

  26. I find scores that are 52-48 dull. Watch this game close and both of these quarterbacks are getting killed. At least there’s some hitting. Isn’t that would football is supposed to be about?

  27. Kind off weird they rushed him to play after a few practices. Not sure hat happens from here. Freeman clearly doesn’t have enough chemistry with a new team after a few practices.

  28. As a Viking fan would like to apologize to other NFL fans for having to watch Minnesota on prime time TV tonight. Sorry for your time wasted out of your life you will never get back.

  29. How many post game interviews of Frazier do we have to hear him say, “we just didn’t make enough plays”? 26 runs in 2 games for the league MVP. Starting a kids who knows 9 plays and sticking with him in a game that was winnable. As a Vikings fan I’m speechless. Are they going for the top pick in the draft…nothing else makes any sense for taking this loss. 30 other teams would have blown out this Giant team tonight.

  30. Is this a media memo? Making this out to be the worst game ever? Have people not been paying attention for the past 5-6 years? MNF is awful EVERY week, regardless of the records of the teams playing.
