Rams’ quarterback search won’t include Vince Young or Tim Tebow

JeffFisher Getty Images

With Sam Bradford done for the year and only Kellen Clemens on the roster, the Rams need a quarterback.

They’re expected to try out several.  According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the several won’t include Vince Young or Tim Tebow.

The omission of Young is no surprise.  Drafted by the Titans in 2006, Young had a rocky relationship, at best, with Jeff Fisher, who now coaches the Rams.  Ultimately, Fisher essentially fired Young during the season.

With Tebow, however, the ongoing lack of interest is unclear.  The guy took a team to the final eight less than two years ago.

Meanwhile, the Bears have signed 29-year-old Jordan Palmer, who has appeared in four career games and thrown 15 career passes.

Regardless of what the Rams do, it’ll be ugly next Monday night in St. Louis.  As Peter King pointed out in today’s Monday Morning Quarterback column, the Cardinals will be hosting Game Five of the World Series that same night, barring a sweep.

And the Rams can move anywhere they want after the 2014 season.

See you in somewhere other than St. Louis.

Great Article. The Rams return to Southern California in 2014 and play at the Rose Bowl until the new venue is complete is welcomed.

Will The Jaguars owner Khan(who has ties to St Louis) replace the Rams with the Jaguars, or simply move the Jags to London?

    Interesting next 2 years.

St Louis Jaguars or London Jaguars?

Is the lack of interest in Tebow really “unclear”?

Dude can’t throw a football and coaches finally see that.

Great insight. I hear the search also won’t include Ryan Leaf, Cade McNown, Fran Tarkington or Brett Favre.

Is Flynn still unemployed? Might make sense to pick him up with the Seahawks coming to town next Monday.

The Packers could trade Aaron Rodgers, clear up a ton of cap space, and probably get the Rams first round picks for the next 12 years or so.

Seriously? There was a question as to whether or not Jeff Fisher wanted Vince Young on the Rams?

Um, for those of you that are new to NFL football: Vince Young is the reason Jeff Fisher is no longer in Nashville. The Titans GM and Fisher were forced to draft Young over their objections, and then 5 games into that season the owner forced Fisher to start Young. The QB’s toxic relationship with the team and city later spiraled out of control when VY heard boos from the home fans for the first time and then refused to go back into the game … eventually killing his and the coach’s career in Music City.

See you somewhere other than St. Louis? As Tony Soprano put it “Always with the drama.” Moving the Rams is dumb. St. Louis is a really good sports city and Los Angeles has failed to keep a team twice already, but common sense isn’t that common anymore.

P.S. Matt Schaub is the obvious answer here, folks. He’s one of only two QBs (Peyton Manning) who habitually dissected the Titans’ defense during the Fisher years.

Another point.. if they move the Rams and then move the Jags to STL to replace them the Jags would have no shot of building any type of consistent fan base.

  20. keepongronking says: Oct 21, 2013 4:15 PM

Jeff Fisher would rather play Tavon Austin at QB than bring in Vince Young. Believe me

You’re right. The league has biases against mentally unstable quarterbacks and/or quarterbacks who can’t throw.

  22. bcknights says: Oct 21, 2013 4:15 PM

I’m sure the Vikings would be willing to trade.
Ponder needs a new team. I think if the kid had some good coaching he could turn into a better QB.
MN coaching staff from the top to the bottom is very poor.

  23. titansbro says: Oct 21, 2013 4:16 PM

“With Tebow, however, the ongoing lack of interest is unclear. The guy took a team to the final eight less than two years ago.”

It’s only unclear to people who didn’t watch the games. That season is what’s known as an outlier- a confluence of luck, miscues by opponents, and occasional flashes of decent QB play.

His numbers were horrific, and between all of those skin-of-their-teeth low scoring wins was interspersed 3 huge blowout losses, including one each to Buffalo and Detroit, and a 3 game losing streak to end the regular season.

It is not the QB job to “win games”. TEAMS win games. It’s the QBs job to move the ball down the field, score points, and HELP the TEAM win games. Even in his “magical” season, the tape shows he didn’t do any of those things very well at all.

  25. vikesrunrunpass says: Oct 21, 2013 4:20 PM

Take ponder he will help you hugely!!!!! He already went thru 4 years of learning he’s so ready!!!

  26. johnnycamparm says: Oct 21, 2013 4:21 PM

How about giving the Redskins their 1st round pick back in exchange for Cousins…

  27. donnymacjack says: Oct 21, 2013 4:23 PM

The problem with any team signing Tim Tebow at this time of the season is that you’d have to re-invent your playbook and strategy if you hope to have any success with him. You can’t just plug Tebow in and expect him to have success as a “traditional” QB. Look at what Fox did with him in Denver as a good example of a coach revamping everything to fit his roster.

If the Rams tried to do that now they’d end up with an entire group of offensive personnel trying to learn a new playbook. Go with someone a bit more traditional and you only have one guy (the new QB) learning a playbook.

  28. valcomm5 says: Oct 21, 2013 4:25 PM

Johnny Hekker has a good QB rating

  29. 4greatestvikingever says: Oct 21, 2013 4:33 PM

    Well Brady Quinn is available!

  31. hawkforlife says: Oct 21, 2013 4:39 PM

I bet every QB being discussed hopes he doesn’t get signed till a week from Tuesday.

  32. 80sbroncofan says: Oct 21, 2013 4:46 PM

If Fisher were to sign Vince Young it would be so he can watch Vince Young take a beating behind that porous offensive line the Rams have. Sweet revenge for Jeff Fisher.

  33. shaundolphinsfan23 says: Oct 21, 2013 4:49 PM

I can’t help but feel like the Sam Bradford injury helps the Rams in the long run. He wasn’t getting the job done as their quarterback, and now they might lose 95% of their remaining games. They might end up drafting one of the top quarterbacks next year.

  34. corkspop says: Oct 21, 2013 4:49 PM

No, Matt Flynn is not available. He’s No. 3 in Buffalo with a chance to be No. 2.

  35. Go-Hawks! says: Oct 21, 2013 4:53 PM

It’ll be AMAZING if the Rams DON’T sign Brady Quinn to a one year deal.

..Perhaps Matt Flynn can get another high price backup job in St. Louis.

But, with the system the Rams have in place under Jeff Fisher, I think the best fit would be to somehow steal Kyle Orton from the Cowboys.

  36. 2jivecrew says: Oct 21, 2013 4:53 PM

No, it isn’t. And no, he didn’t. That team took HIM to the final 8 less than two years ago. They won in spite of him.

  37. archup314 says: Oct 21, 2013 4:54 PM

I think a great option for this year would be to look at David Carr, he was a great backup for NY Giants for many years. He is a veteran.

  38. jaypace says: Oct 21, 2013 5:26 PM

Anybody that says the broncos won in spite of tebow didn’t watch any of those games. If they won in spite of him how come they were 4-22 before he took over?

  39. idpfantasyfootball says: Oct 21, 2013 5:26 PM

Carr would be interesting. They should also consider looking north to Canada… Troy Smith could help this team and he is currently a backup in the CFL.

  40. stevedurbano says: Oct 21, 2013 5:33 PM

I don’t think Fisher wants a QB controversy next year, so I think the most likely scenario will be a no-name guy to back up Clemens. They say Bradford’s their guy. At this point they have a budding RB in Stacey, an improving WR group, and 2 solid TE’s. What they still don’t have is a left tackle and it sure looks like buyers remorse is setting in with the Jake Long deal. Fisher is nothing if not pragmatic- I expect him not to throw the towel in but to definitely use the rest of the season to improve the Rams for next year. Might as well see what some of the young guys can do.

  41. cuda1234 says: Oct 21, 2013 5:34 PM

Tebow didn’t “take” a team to the final eight, he was taken to the final eight by a team on a big roll.

They won’t make any big moves or bring in any flahsy names. Likely, we’ll see them bring back Austin Davis and they’ll just see how it plays out with Clemens/Davis the rest of the way.

There sure are a lot of delusional Tebow lovers here. Undoubtedly every last one of them is an evangelical Christian. There can be no other reason why anyone would want this guy. He’s a horrible QB who causes the NFL to regress 10 years every time he throws one of his patented wobbly passes.

Sending a safety or Linebacker to the Texans for Matt Schaub makes a ton of sense. Schaub is not owed any guaranteed money after this season so he can be cut. The Rams still have a chance at the wildcard and Schaub could help. getting him out of that system where Kubiak sets the plays in stone could make him a better QB.

  53. boots44 says: Oct 21, 2013 6:48 PM

Kubiak would not, like it if Schaub was traded to The Rams.
He is already saying Schaub is his QB.

    The reason he wouldn’t like it…….is obvious…

f Schaub is successful, then it would be clear whose fault is was that Schaub struggled. The play calling of Kubiak.

  60. mavs1955 says: Oct 22, 2013 7:42 AM

That is stupid just work both of them out and continue on. There are no other quarterbacks out there right now. Take one for insurance purposes and or backup, what do you have to lose? veteran minimum, while you still are paying someone to sit the whole year so what is the difference.
