Willie Colon: Officials warned Patriots not to push on field goals

AP

The Patriots’ penalty for illegally pushing on a field goal block attempt in overtime came to many NFL fans as a surprise because it was the first time that particular penalty had ever been called in a game. But Jets offensive lineman Willie Colon says it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to the Patriots.

In fact, Colon told Newsday that he overheard the officials say that they had warned the Patriots on a previous field-goal attempt about the pushing penalty.

If that’s true, it’s stunning that the Patriots still committed the penalty after the officials had already warned them. It’s also unclear why the officials didn’t throw a flag previously, if they had seen the Patriots break the rule. (The Jets had two field-goal attempts before the penalty in overtime, both good, both from 37 yards.)

The Patriots appeared to get away with the same penalty last week against the Saints, and Albert Breer of NFL Network reported that the Jets alerted the officials to keep an eye on the Patriots’ pushing on field-goal block attempts. Ryan declined to answer when asked about that at his press conference today.

What we can say for sure is that New England won’t have to be warned again. Everyone on the Patriots’ roster and coaching staff has learned that rule the hard way.

  1. Where did Willie hear this fairy tale? I assume they didn’t warn Colpes before Gostowski’s game tying kick because he still did it. As well as line up infront of the long snapper(also a penalty).

  2. Both teams committed that penalty multiple times during the times, including the Jets on the Patriots last minute game-tying field goal.

    Don’t get me wrong, Patriots lost because of their ineptitude on third down (which the Jets monster D-line deserves credit for). Still a very hard loss to swallow considering the inconsistency of that call being made in that spot.

  3. BB with his own interpretation of the rules? Shocking.
    At least he fessed up today and admitted he was wrong. Win some, lose some.

  4. I love the “jets were doing the same thing all game” accusations. Funny bc I have a little invention called DVR and I re-watched the game and did NOT see evidence of that anywhere. Sorry but lying doesnt work anymore in this generation lol. Its called the future old timer, get with the times.

    In other news, the NFL warned the Patriots that taping other team’s practices was against the rules. Please don’t cheat again.
    ____

    Yet another child who was probably like 9 when spygate happened. Can you explain to me which “practices” the Patriots taped? Did Bill Belichick fly out to other team facilities and tape from a tree branch.

    Not sure what your daddy told you about what happened, but the Patriots had a video production intern video tape opposing hand signals that were and always had been IN PLAIN VIEW to every man, woman, child, dragonfly, and bumble in the stadium who wanted to see them. Nothing secretive or covert about it.

  6. Yeah considering each team had done it multiple times in the game already, no way they should have called it on the game deciding field goal. Should have left it go for the game and warned each team afterward. Why let both teams do it all game and then call it when the game is getting ready to be decided? Sounds like someone had some money on this one.

  7. Belichick said on WEEI that the officials did not give a warning. Colon is full of it. In fact, it is clear to see the Jets doing the exact same thing on the FG by the Patriots that tied the game.

    No one is arguing that by the letter of the law it is the right call. It was the right call. What is ridiculous is it is the first time it was called ever in the NFL. How is called in that situation? Especially when the Jets did the same thing on the FG attempt before the end of regulation. Ridiculous. But that is sports. Time to move on. Colon is just talking because that is what bad teams do in NYC. Talk.

  8. It is not uncommon for officials to warn teams about flags before throwing one especially if the penalty had no bearing on the outcome of the play. Hey coach or player I could have flagged you on that fix it or I am gonna call it. I have heard it many times in the past.

  9. In other news, The NFL referees are all deciding to quit simultaneously and all become tax accountants.

    Their official statement is that “they wanted to go to a job had had an easier set of rules to understand (sic).

  10. The Patriots are a team on their way down. Don’t expect any more Super Bowl rings or appearances for a long time. A Verrrrrry long time.

    Gang Green is on the rise gents. A few more key playmakers on offense and we have a team that could dominate the AFC East for a long time. A Verrrrrrry long time.

    LOL Bill!

  11. LOL. Pats lose one game and fans of bottom dweller teams like the Jets come out of the woodwork spewing virtriole.

    Jealousy is so unbecoming.

    Enjoy your “Superbowl” win from yesterday, Jets fans. That’ll be the highlight of your season.

  12. Even if it is true, (A Jets player did say it) the point is that Belichick thought the Patriots were interpreting the play right, because that’s what the officials told them at some point. Given the head of officials said the same thing in a video (that a second level player would have to push for it to be a penalty), everyone should believe that the officials gave the Patriots that same impression.

    The official in this game may have warned them, but it wasn’t some case of defiance. It has been proven that the NFL was giving out the wrong interpretation of this rule publicly and this was the first time it was ever called, so why should Belichick have changed the way he played.

    Well Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reviewed the game as well and said the Jets DID do the same thing on Gostkowski’s tying field goal. Check it out doofus:
    Mike Reiss ‏@MikeReiss 4h
    On play, Coples lined up in same spot at C. Jones did. Coples looped behind player to his right. One-handed push. Player flips over snapper.

    Sucks to be wrong, doesn’t it miggs?

  14. teams have been doing it for years and there was nothing wrong with it.

    It’s a b.s. rule but there it is.

    If the pats got caught because Ryan tipped them off that’s another ‘gotcha’ in the ongoing lovefest between the two teams.

    Smith was 100% better in this game from the first between the two.

    I am a Pats fan

  15. Wow. The Jets are a bunch of hypocrites. They tipped off the refs to watch the Pats but they actually did the push on a field goal in the 4th quarter. It’s a shame because the Jets totally out played the Patriots.

  16. Ugh…amazing how everyone is covering this like it’s the century’s greatest legal trial:

    1.) It’s done, it happened…get over it.

    2.) Every Patriot involved (coaching staff and player) admited they did it and admitted the ruling was correct. If Bill and staff have owned up and moved on, so should you.

    3.) The fact that it wasn’t called before then means nothing. Refs aren’t robots…You think there weren’t dozens of other missed calls during every single game in the NFL? Just because you miss one doesn’t mean you never call a foul.

  17. LOL @ jet fans…Most pitiful excuse in NFL.

    They got a win on controversial call,,one that shouldn’t have been made @ that time.

    Official should lose his job for nit picking to decide outcome. That’s like a ticky tack 3 second call in basketball to decide a playoff game..you do not do that.

    But, jets finally get a super bowl win…and MORE IMPORTANTLY, a license to open their mouths, something they are good at.

  18. Jones’ transparent attempt to fall on his sword was laughable and disingenuous. The Butt Bumble was a specifically designed play, obviously taught and condoned by the Pats coaching staff. It starts at the top, and it was ludicrous to believe a football-consumed, micro-manager like BB would not have been aware of the exact rule, nor the ‘mis-implementation’ of it. Kudos to Ryan and his staff. Teams were fully briefed on the new rule in camp, yet the Pats callously attempted to use a subsequent, erroneous NFL.com report as cover to take advantage and, now, weakly justify it. It’s eerily similar to the kick-off ‘out-of-bounds and re-entering’ dust-up when Westhoff (and subsequent game film) revealed the Pats had employed, if not originated, lining up their bench players close to the sideline to impede opposing gunners. While I admire their tenacity in constantly looking for any edge in this storied rivalry, relentlessly stretching the rules envelope, it goes far in explaining the skepticism, if not contempt, with which the rest of the league holds this otherwise successful franchise. It’s unnecessary and embarrassing, and belittles the game. It is certainly getting beyond tiresome.

  19. How many professionals do you know, (accountants, lawyers, government regulators) who would openly state that it was their mistake because they didn’t know the rules or learned about them for the first time when they were caught?

    While this story sounds plausible but the truth is that they knew about the rules and just got caught cheating. Its the Patriot Way, don’t you know?

    A documented cheater (Belicheck) gets busted for cheating again during a game, and it costs his team a win. That is justice.

    ____

    Lol. It was a flag. Did your team commit a holding penalty or PI yesterday? If they did, then they were CHEATING.

  21. They were warned and when they did it again it was called. This is how it works across the entire world of professional sports. The refs don’t want to call the small infractions, but they won’t lose paychecks over it by ignoring it after they warned you.

  22. first off it the patriots did it earlier in the game why didnt they call it then? also why didnt they call it when the jets also did it? with a possible game winning kick in OT is NOT the right time to call something stupid like that when you ignored it 4 other times in the game.

  23. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA…………….Little Bill and the CHEATERS got caught again………….Enjoy those tainted ****** rings cuse WE ALL KNOW YOUR BAWSTON TEAM ARE NOTHING BUT CHEATS………….

  24. will someone, anyone please tell me when and how the Patriots taped anyone’s practice ever.-anyone?

  25. FYI NATIONAL MEDIA – Not the first time it was called in a game. First called on Chargers in opening Monday Night game against Texans this season.

  26. I love the NFL and have for over 50 years but this is just getting ridiculous. Too many guys are getting hurt. Too many bad calls by officials at critical junctures that determine who wins instead of the play on the field. Too many coaches lobbying officials. Too many (marginal) players talking trash before and after games. Too many media sites focusing on every little controversy instead of the game. How about the two great catches by Wes Welker on that drive that ended with a fumble? I am a Patriots fan and I loved seeing Welker make those catches. Wish we still had him but still appreciate a great player with a huge heart that performs. That’s the NFL I love.

  27. jet fans and their team are the biggest bunch of losers in the league. In their 53-year history, they have an overall regular season record of 365 wins. I think Brady has that many since he has been a starter.

  28. Are Pats fans seriously crying over a bad call? Hello? Did y’all see the game last week where y’all got like 4 different bad calls in your favor that won the game for you against the Saints??

    This is what you call KARMA, Pats fans. Don’t expect this Who Dat to feel sorry for you after that total hogwash game last week.

    Good job Jets. Payback is a mother.

  30. The pats had a great run, like 5 years ago. Now they need beaucoup help from refs. The saints game was disgraceful. And this one, what a bunch of idiots to not even listen to the refs. They can’t play for you!

  31. The Patriots are the last team to be complaining about a new rule that cost them a game.

    I am totally against all the new stupid rules that the NFL puts in every year and the refs can use them to decide games. However, no team deserved this more.

    Tuck it away in a dark spot Pat’s fans, live with it.

  32. I get the point of the penalty, but 15 yards? Seems kinda of harsh. Wouldn’t 5 yards and a repeat of the down suffice? In some cases that may result in a 1st down, and in a close game 5 yards still gives the kicking team a better opportunity.

  33. will someone, anyone please tell me when and how the Patriots taped anyone’s practice ever.-anyone?

    They can’t because it’s never happened and the average idiot doesn’t understand what spygate really was. Anybody that wants to can still film the defensive signals from press box level, legally.

    As for the rule, Tedy Bruschi explained today why it’s a good one, and I agree.

    Just a weird time to decide to enforce it, that’s all.

  34. And yet the Jets committed the same penalty on Gostkowski’s kick to send the game to OT, but weren’t flagged for that…I understand there’s a rule, and it’s an awful rule, but if you’re emphasizing to your refs to call it, then call it equally…and I really don’t believe the refs said anything; consider the source that it’s coming from

  35. steelcityjoker says: Oct 21, 2013 6:29 PM

    Funny how much these obscure rules sting when they work against your team, and not for them. Like the “Tuck Rule”…..

    ——————————————————-

    Thumbs up, I never want to hear the Pats complain about a penalty or any rule. If it wasn’t for that Tuck play that everyone knows is bull. The Raiders go on to win that super bowl and Gruden stays as the coach, We win the following here cause there is no Gruden to coach against us….And hell Ill take there 3rd and last super bowl ring also, Belicheat goes down as a bum, Brady marrys Britney spears and not a Victoria secret model. And has the same career as kevin federline. wait WHO?

  36. @newjerseygiants:

    Son, I’d hold onto this quote from you, but by the time the Jets finish 8-8, miss the playoffs and fire Ryan, you’ll be long gone.

    I figure if the G-Men lose tonight, you won’t have much to say and be invisible.

  37. It’s kind of sad how people grasp at little things like this for the chance to lash out and spew insults. It was one call in one game before we’re even half way through the season. Who cares? Get a life, a hobby, or a girlfriend. So many losers on here it’s really sad. Football is not that important.

  38. I think the real story here is multiplemiggs ability to read the accusations about the Jets, go to his DVR and personally check if the Jets were guilty on any of the Patriots’ field goals or PATs, and then come back here to report that the Jets were innocent. All within a 5 minutes of the first post accusing the Jets of committing the same penalty.

  39. .

    @steelcity, @sicklynick

    The NFL Competition Committee and all other NFL governing bodies have repeatedly stated that the so called ” tuck rule ” was applied properly. …., 12 years ago.

    .

  40. Typical NFL fans. The patriots shell off 2-4 loses a year and it turns in to the other teams SuperBowl. Happens every year – especially with the Jets.

    We’ll miss you again this year in January – but if we can make the Jest season with this win, and keep Ryan on staff for the rest of Brady’s career. We’ll take it.

    Yesterday, Colin said he heard the official warn….
    Today, Colin says he heard the official SAY he warned..
    Tomorrow, Collin claims he read a tweet next week about the matter.

  42. what’s stunning is that the referees would make a bulls**t call like that to effectively decide a game

  43. The National Flag League is trying to kill itself. How many fans watching that overtime said “are they for real with that call”? I’m not a Jet Or Pats fan but that was a brutal senseless penalty which shows this league is flat out controlled.

    The refs take the fun out of watching. The rule which has never been called is just plain stupid and ruined a great game.

  44. Don’t you love how defense the Pat trolls have become? that’s the smell of fear, they know the Jets have allot more young talent they they do.
    The future is not nearly as bright in NE, and people are strting to realize it.
    The ‘ bottom dwelling” jets are 1 game back.

  45. RuleGate
    It’s here
    NFL changes it’s on line explanation of the rule 2 hours AFTER the game because in its original explanation did NOT clearly state the push cannot come from the line of scrimmage.

    Confused?

    So were the refs because as Mike Reiss of ESPN clearly shows in his column today that Jets Coples violated the same rule on Pats tying field goal by lining up opposite the long snapper and looping around his guard and pushing up the pile.

    RuleGate.

    I love it. Refs misapplying a rule and directly impacting the outcome of a game. That’s never happened before. Like Bogar failing to eject the Ravens D back who clearly made direct contact with him in the SB and then allowing holding on consecutive plays that decide the game.
    Bogar has a curious track record with these game deciding judgements.

  46. Bottom line in this NFL a team can’t put themselves in a position where a penalty like that gives the other team an opportunity to win!! It happens all the time evey week though. Teams don’t take care of business between the goalposts & then start whinning & spreading their vitriole when they come up short.

    Pretty funny though how after all the innocent act the truth has come out that they were warned on a previous play & did it again anyway!

  47. Don’t think it’s been said enough here by DAMN SIGHT:
    Pats fans WHINING about an obscure rule called out of nowhere that directly affected the outcome of a game (and a regular season game at that) is pure, wonderful, hilarity.

    Let’s see:
    You should have played better the rest of the game.
    Why did you let the Jets drive down the field and score on you?
    Why didn’t you just block it?

    You guys really do believe the league is supposed to gift you games, don’t you?

    PS Be sure and let the first Raider fan you see know just how much it stings to have a game literally taken out of your hands.

  49. It looked to me that it was his assignment to allow the lineman next to him go ahead and he would move over and push. His first step was over to his right to move behind the other guy. Was that coaching?

    Legit rule that rarely got called but when it did it sure was an obscure time to do it

  51. Since nobody has heard of this rule, how about an explanation as to what this rule entails. Poor journalism.

  52. @ billsfan1 – Yea, let’s not let facts get in the way of a good conspiracy theory.

    Yawn, Jets get their Week 7 Super Bowl ring to go with their Week 2 rings from 2009 and 2010. #Dynasty!

    Meanwhile, the Pats will compete for another title this year, Jets will be lucky to go 8-8, and the Bills aren’t even a real team. Yet every year when the Pats lose a game or 2, the haters and lunatics come out in full force professing the end of the Patriot reign that has caused them so much angst and heartache for over a decade.

  53. Gotta love it when the Patsy’s get caught with their pants down, again. Keep up the good work, coach Belicheat.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Your DVR must be biased or broken…because the report is the Jets actually did it twice…just more subtle than the Patriots…and of course the Patriots didn’t snitch out the Yets.
  55. patriots is the only team in nfl which can loose a game on bad call and still get ripped by nfl fans… downside of being a the top team for so many years… nobody is shedding a tear… but that hurt… a lot!
  56. the assumption is that if the (totally legitimate, communicated) rule violation isn’t called, pats get the ball on their 39 and go to jets territory for their own field goal.
    in the alternate universe where refs ignore penalties here’s what really happened. pats moved the ball but had a tough time with the jets defense. came to THIRD DOWN and dropped back to pass. jets rushed and wilkerson strip sacked brady. colon picked up the ball and ran the distance beyond the reach of demoralized pats players. jets win on the touchdown. the result is the same.
  57. For all of you claiming Mike Reiss (A Patriots Beat reporter) analyzed it and the Jets did the same thing are completely wrong. Coples doesn’t push, he isn’t even moving forward, he moves sideways on the play. His actions certainly don’t look like those of Jones. Listen Pats fans every time you do something illegal it’s not ok to claim “everyone else does it too” as an excuse.
  58. The Patriots didn’t lose the game solely because of the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Chris Jones in overtime. First and foremost, credit should go to the Jets for making the plays when it counts. But specific to the penalty, if umpire Tony Michalek is going to make that call on Jones, it’s hard to imagine why he wouldn’t have flagged the Jets for the same thing on Stephen Gostkowski’s game-tying 44-yard field goal with 19 seconds left. Quinton Coples lined up in the same spot as Jones, looped to his right like Jones, and jammed his right arm into the back of a teammate, hurling him into the formation (the teammate flips over snapper Danny Aiken). While Coples’ action was a bit more subtle, the enforcement of the never-called-before rule was too inconsistent from this view, especially at such a critical time in the game.
  59. Forget the kick. A foul is a foul. What everyone should be talking about is the marked decline in Tom Brady. So many excuses are being made about the young receivers… TB I not putting the ball where it needs to be. If you take off your blinders and look carefully you’ll see balls behind, above, and un-catchable. TB is on his way to average.
    Then there is McDaniels, with his play calling.
    The defense is gutted. The line should be called the bulge.
    As they stand now the Pats may, I say MAY, back into the playoffs, but they’ll be dispatched quickly.
