Falcons add Thomas Howard to roster

Jacoby Jones, Dennis Pitta, Thomas Howard AP

The Falcons can use all the help they can find at the moment because of injuries, and took a shot at a guy coming off a major one of his own.

The Falcons announced they had signed linebacker Thomas Howard, waiving linebacker Jamar Chaney to create the roster spot.

Howard was playing well for the Bengals when he tore his ACL last September. They worked him out before the start of the regular season, but didn’t sign him.

The 30-year-old linebacker was originally a second-round pick of the Raiders. He’s a solid cover player when he’s well, and for a team as thin as the Falcons at the moment, he’s well worth a shot.

If he is back up to full health, he should be a nice add for the Falcons. He was pretty popular among Bengals fans.

Excellent LB in space and a good dude. Hate to see him playing for a rival of the Saints, but glad he’s back in the league.

There was obviously an issue if the Bengals didn’t resign him.

It was a problem that NFL insiders refer to as “a full roster”

If he had gotten arrested while he was out the Bengals would have brought him back.

Howard didn’t fit with the Bungals because he’s not a criminal.

He’s a very good in coverage, but has trouble getting off blocks in the run game.

Overall, this is a very good pickup for the Falcons.

A high quality OT & DE are more important needs. Guess that will be handled with the #5 pick next April.
