Josh Freeman will start again for Vikings

Josh Freeman’s first night as the starting quarterback of the Vikings didn’t go all that well as Minnesota moved up a spot in the race to the bottom of the barrel in the NFL by losing 23-7 to the previously winless Giants.

Freeman was 20-of-53 during the game for a completion percentage of 37.7, which is ghastly compared even to Freeman’s modest accuracy totals while with the Buccaneers. Freeman didn’t have much practice time with the Vikings before being thrust into the starting lineup, but coach Leslie Frazier said Tuesday, via Master Tesfatsion of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, that he thought Freeman had practiced well and that he wouldn’t do anything differently if he did it over again.

And he won’t do anything differently for the Week Eight game against the Packers. Frazier said Freeman would start again, a decision that isn’t much of a surprise despite Monday night’s results. Freeman wouldn’t be in Minnesota if the team had any real faith in the ability of Christian Ponder or Matt Cassel to handle the job and the team has to hope he’ll do better with more experience in the system.

It would also help if the Vikings could generate a rushing attack more potent than the one that gained 30 yards on 14 carries on Monday night. Frazier mentioned that as a priority for this week, although it’s difficult to imagine Adrian Peterson finding much running room if defenses continue to have no reason to respect or fear the Vikings passing attack.

  1. This feels like an actual strategy to secure a top 3 draft pick. Then again, they’d be managing to alienate all three quarterbacks by week 8 if they benched Freeman now.

  2. I can see starting him to see what you have (though odds favored a bad performance) but they were in that game and his troubles were clear. Not bringing in either Ponder or Cassel was inexcusable.

  3. Wow, just listened to the Leslie Frazier press conference. He’s an amazing individual. Can only see the positive in a team that is clearly underperforming, yet, must believe that the Media and Fans are completely ignorant since he continues to spew the same non-sense week in and week out. If everything is indeed fixable as he states- THEN WHY ISN’T IT BEING FIXED?? Coaches got to go…….and take Chris Cook with you please. Ziggy- Really, this is the best you can do??
Any room left on the Chiefs bandwagon?

    Signed,
Apparently an ignorant, know nothing about football fan.

  4. Remember the days when we were complaining about Christian Ponder’s inaccuracy, because receivers had to reach behind them to catch passes and couldn’t run after the catch? I think I prefer that to throwing the ball 10 yards out of bounds. Freeman was inaccurate to an impossible degree. I’d say give him three weeks and if he can’t get a pass within 3 feet of the receiver’s hands by then, it’s back to Ponder.

  5. “It would also help if the Vikings could generate a rushing attack more potent than the one that gained 30 yards on 14 carries on Monday night”

It won’t be easy. The Packers rank 3rd in the NFL in rush defense giving up only 79 yards/game and 3.4 yards per attempt.

Still, I’ve seen one too many games where Pederson has burned the Packers to take that to the bank….

  6. I’m certain that Ponder would be more productive than Freeman is at this point. As Gruden said last night, this isn’t a preseason game where you’re evaluating players on the roster. It’s all about playing the guys who give you the best chance to win NOW.

  7. It would appear that the Vikings miss Percy Harvin more than they would probably ever admit.

The big play threat of Harvin opened things up for AP.

Patterson has potential, but isn’t there yet.

  8. I’d really like to be as giddy as some GB fans obviously are.
But the fact is that Freeman will probably do much better with more practice time under his belt. And the underdog frequently pulls out a victory in this series. And the Pack is still starting two rookie LBs that practically no one had heard of six months ago. And Adrian Peterson tore the Packers to shreds a couple of times last year. And the Packers had to suit up injured guys last week just to meet the 46 man requirement. And Rodgers may be throwing to an assistant coach by the time another game is ending.
So – Packers will be favored, and should win. But don’t bet more farms than you can afford to lose.

  9. What’s the problem? didn’t you hear Freeman’s press conference? So, a few throws were off by a “hair.” Sure, they made some mistakes. Sure, they have to improve on offense. Sure, their defense is terrible and ranks last in almost all phases of the games. It’s all correctable. Don’t you guys listen to your coach and GM? Don’t worry so much!

  10. As a Packer fan it really doesn’t matter who they toss out there at QB. The only real thing they need to do is stop AP. Last year they proved they couldn’t do it and were torched, including losing in week 17. Tramon Williams might wanna sit this one out considering how scared he was last year when AP came anywhere near him. Pack should win this game but it may not be the cakewalk everyone thinks it’ll be.

  11. its easy to generate more of a rushing attack, RUN IT MORE THAN 13 TIMES! Last night showed the true stupidity of this coaching staff. Freeman was clearly in over his head, you have an All-World RB, and you only hand it off to him 13 times, while making your new QB that doesn’t know the system yet throw it 53 times.

    Please!

Do the Vikings even have a first-rounder next year after making the deal to trade back into the first round for Cordarrelle Patterson?

Genuine question. I honestly can’t remember if they gave up any 2014 picks in moving up.

  13. Even if, or when Freeman gets the system down there are still huge problems in Minnesota. With the offensive line and about every position on defense (other than Jared Allen) performing like middle school kids this season is done for the Vikings.

    Hot seat for Frazier.

  14. Great! Now Green Bay will surely win. Thanks Leslie! Oh yeah, how does Rick Spielman still have a job? Wasted money on Greg Jennings when there wasn’t a market. Drafted Christian Steele. What a fool!

  15. Certainly Frazier made this decision based upon the wonderful performance Freeman showed last evening. If Freeman is the Viking’s best option, they are truly desperate and their future quarterback will be determined by next year’s draft, which looks like a high pick.

  16. The competition for worst NFL franchise just got more intense. Leslie Frazier is either on serious medication or just a plain loser.
I would think if you lost 23-7 to a winless team and gave the best player in the NFL only 13 carries you most certainly would do something different.

  17. This is why you do not trade for a QB in the middle of the season.
Seriously how many years has Freeman played in the NFL … he looked like an undrafted rookie in his first game …. pathletic.

  18. News flash!!! Vikings sign Jeff Garcia, Vince Young, and Tim Tebow to run an all new three headed QB attack while Adrian Peterson sits on the bench. Tebow hands off to Garcia, lateral to Vince Young, pass to Asiata. Unstoppable says Musgrave. Frazier: Coach of the year.

  19. I’m conflicted. Beating up on the hapless and tasteless Vikings is always fun, even this year when it’s incredibly easy. But would it be even more fun for the Packers to lose and screw up their draft position?

  20. Starting Freeman this last game i am fine with. But once you see he’s in over his head after the first quarter or half take him out and put Ponder back in. We had the ball in fg range in a tie game and he throws a terrible pick. He threw at least 10 balls 20 yards out of bounds. Ponder would have given us a chance in the second half. Why was he so stubborn leaving him in after one of the worst games we have ever seen. Your season was still alive if you got against a giants team who couldn’t move the ball either. Just disgusted with the decision to leave him in.

  21. no one respected the passing game last year, and adrian still went on a tear. the rams tried going with 5 defensive linemen for pete’s sake. if jared allen’s embracing the suck, that must mean that he’s hanging out with the o-line a lot these days.

  22. So where are all of the Viking fans that thought Freeman just needed a new team to perform well? The reality is that he has one good game every 7 or 8 weeks, if your lucky.

  23. I think Josh Freeman was a solid pickup for the Vikings, however I was disappointed when finding out he’s making more money then Cassel and Ponder. I wouldn’t have said “you’re the starter when ready…” Because, let’s face it, he wasn’t ready last night and they still gave him the start.

Really though, which I’ve been saying since last season (I’m not looking for kudos, by the way) the Vikings front office gave up on Ponder way to early.

And in typical Viking fashion, he’ll leave when his contract is up (or before) and he’ll be successful wherever he goes. Ponder was not the problem for us this season. Was he lights out? No. But did he have us in every game? Yes he did. Our offense was 5th in the NFL in points scored when he was the starter…

The defense has been the sole liability this season, you can also make the argument, which many fans have, that Musgrave is just as big a problem…

But, the Vikings now HAVE to roll with Freeman for the rest of the season, for no other reason then the fact that he needs to show the front office he is or isn’t the long-term answer, because already, they’ve closed the door on Christian Ponder.

  24. Isn’t Ponder’s rookie contract up after next season? They certainly don’t want to pay him “starter” money, but probably don’t mind keeping him as a backup. If Freeman pans out the rest of this season, he wont be getting Rodgers or Flacco money either. If he doesn’t pan out they will be in good shape for one of the many QB prospects next year. There is a “plan” here, although it may be a fuzzy one.

  25. Packers to stack 10 in the box and Freeman still will overshoot everone by 10 yards.
    Pack 42
    Vikings 7

  26. Serous questions for Viking fans.
Would you trade AP is you got the same thing in return that you gave up to The Cowboys for Herschel Walker?

  27. Starting Freeman again? Did they not see last night’s game? How much more is left to see? The guy was 0-10 going back to last season in Tampa Bay and after last night there is more to see?

  28. Packers won’t see this as a trap game, since the week after is a home game against the Bears with a backup QB, which shouldn’t be a tough game.

All this just goes to show how worthless preseason predictions are. Before the season started, these two games looked like part of a very tough schedule for Green Bay, as both Minnesota and Chicago looked like contenders. Now Minnesota is in disarray, to put it kindly, and Chicago has just been wiped out by injuries.

  29. Go ahead and get confident, Packsters. Freemon is coming for that pathetic excuse for a defense. Pederson ill get in the groove, open up playacting for Freemon, and will carve that weak D up. Vikes 35-3. bank on it!

  30. As bad as I want to believe the Packers will dominate the Vikings this weekend, its one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL, so you can throw thier records out.

Especially after Minny. had contributed to one of the worst games in the history of Monday night, they are going to try to make a statement playing on national TV again.

Big changes for Minny. are coming with a new stadium, and another embarrassing will lead to some big changes in the staff. I also wouldn’t blame them for shopping Peterson, because they need to have a competitive team in the new building not just a superstar to sell tickets.

They did what was best for their future by trading Harvin this off-season. They need to do that again with Peterson, maybe KC, or NE would be reasonable destinations.

  31. Give Adrian Peterson the ball every play on offense he’s bound to break some big runs, The Vikings offensive coordinator bill musgrave MUST stop calling plays “Theres A Problem” He’s Not Any Good!

  32. I don’t understand … everyone wanted Ponder out. Now he’s out … you want him back in. I’m not saying Ponder is the answer but he was the QB for the team who made the playoffs last year and he was still learning … should have stuck with him until the end of the season and then decide.
Bringing in Freeman now is cheaper for the Vikings … imagine if they signed him to a mega contract … ouch. The Vikings have no choice but to go with Freeman the rest of the season to see what he’s got but I think they know they dropped the ball on this acquisition already.

All I can say is that was the worst MNF game … EVER! ESPN wants a refund.

Maybe it was a rivalry at one time. But the Packers have beaten the hapless and tasteless Vikings twice in each of the past 3 years.

Viking fans now refer to this match-up as ritualistic torture.

  34. I heard that a Las Vegas betting service predicted the Vikings would be 3-13 this year. This prediction was done during training camp. When I heard this, I didn’t believe it was possible after the Vikings were 10-6 last year. Well, it looks like the people in Vegas are going to be right after all.

  35. I’m just really happy Greg Jennings didn’t give the packers any bulletin board stuff this past offseason. That may give them a little extra incentive.

The Packers got beat by those Vikings last year.

I want GB to crush them as bad as any other Packer fan, but with a bunch of injuries adding up, and the Vikings getting laughed at for the past 20 hours.

It may not be the walk in the park everyone assumes it will be.

  37. Underestimate Freeman but it might come back to bite you in the @#$ if he actually connects with his receivers. One thing I know is Freeman was not comfortable in that last game.

  38. Capers is one of the worst D coordinators in the league. I bet Freeman throws for 400 yards on that pathetic Packers D.

Those throws were off by a hair. Rapunzel’s hair!

  41. The Vegas line only has the Packers as 10 point favorites to win the game. That looks like some easy money considering the winless Giants won by 16.

Another easy bet is Eddie Lacy having more rushing yards than Toby Gerhart and Peterson combined.

Even though it will be a dark stale air artificial environment the Packers should win big.

The Packers have won 11 of the last 15 meetings with most of the losses being to Brett Favre.

  42. Wow! How smart were the Buc’s to not sign this slappy to one of those Flacco QB mega-deals. I live in Sarasota and one of Freeman’s passes landed in my parking lot last night!

  43. Our season is bound for a top 3 draft pick( YES!!!) ….that being said, Vikings shock the world Sunday and beat the Packers!

  44. When the boss tells you to “MARCH,” then you march. This MUST be coming directly from Vikes front office and by that I mean the check-signer. It is not plausible to believe that ANY head coach would send Freeman out to START a game after THAT performance last night. Zygi must be attempting to become the Jerah of the frozen tundra.

  45. Just let spielman coach – we all know he is hell bent on putting this substance abuse qb out there. I don’t know who all has to get fired – but they need to start with the GM for forcing this craziness.

  46. It doesn’t matter if Freeman doesn’t pan out, whoever they get at QB is going to have the same kind of games these three have with the current offensive line they have. Freeman was running for his life all game long. They made the Giants Dline look like this was 2010, not 2013.

  47. Ponder actually beat the Packers last year, if I am not mistaken, Frazier was there to see it.

I don’t understand this move unless it is to lose on purpose. Not like they need another reason to, they are doing fine in that department on their own.

  48. I’m starting to feel bad for Vikings fans. Not only did they get forced to pay for a new office building for the Owner of the team but their going to have to buy PSLs if they want to watch this team in person, which is going backwards and making very strange personnel decisions. Ouch.

  49. You can tell when a season is lost for a team when you start out the year with a quarterback that no one really likes, he loses his job to a back up that everyone knows isn’t any good but at least hope will play well enough to win a couple games, the back up ends up looking as terrible as everyone knew but tried to ignore, so he is replaced by a mid season signing that is put into action well before he is ready and then stinks up the field, and finally fans start asking for the original quarterback that no one liked to begin with back.

  50. You need to get some eye glasses. Maybe you wasn’t watching the same game everyone else was. He will never be 1/4 of what Tom Brady is. He could be the next Tebow though.

  51. Maybe the Vikings can contact Vince Young and give him a tryout. It couldn’t be much worse then it is now. Tell them to cross their fingers, they might be able to get Carson Palmer. That would probably make them even happier.
