Report: Patriots to sign Andre Carter

The injury-riddled Patriots defense is bringing in reinforcements.

Andre Carter, the veteran defensive end who previously played for the Patriots in 2011, is returning to New England. According to Josina Anderson of ESPN, Carter plans to sign with the Patriots today.

The 34-year-old Carter had one of his best seasons in his prior stint in New England, recording 10 sacks, forcing two fumbles and being chosen to the Pro Bowl. But he didn’t return to New England in 2012 and ended up having a disappointing season in Oakland. The Raiders cut Carter this year at the end of the preseason.

The No. 7 overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft, Carter has had an up-and-down career: He has four different seasons of double-digit sack totals, but he also has five different seasons with fewer than five sacks. If the Patriots can get him to play the way he did for them the last time he was in New England, this is a mid-season signing that has the potential to upgrade their defense.

I dont think line was the main problem after Vince left. The gap between Mayo and the rest of the LBs is just too big to fill this season.

    This pleases me.

He was a mis-fit for the skins when they moved to a 3-4 but always been solid-above average in the 4-3. A good guy to boot. Nice signing.

the only way this makes sense is if the pats are moving ninkovich to LB, but I don’t see him as any kind of upgrade to Buchanan at this point

  5. harrisonhits2 says: Oct 22, 2013 11:13 AM

Good, he knows the system and played well with the Pats before. Hopefully he’s in good shape, fresh and ready to go.

It’s amazing how many people have dumped on the Patriots for losing a game in New York in overtime.

Sure the Pats have sustained some serious injuries but as you can see by the signing of Carter, the Pats always have their ear to the ground.

And finally the Pats are 5-2. Did you know only three teams in the NFL have a better record?

    Good signing!

Just what the Pats need–a 34 year old defensive end coming off a down year. Where were they when Josh Cribbs, a player that they could’ve used, signed with their arch enemy, the Jets?

I like the signing especially for the veteran leadership he can provide for a unit that lost two key leaders. I was never comfortable having 3 free agent rookies in the middle and it will be interested how they deploy the line since Carter is a DE not DT.

Last Sunday showed a lot of struggles on the D without Mayo and hopefully this will help.

Still 5-2 with all the injuries and we’ll be getting Vereen back after the bye.

  11. kate773 says: Oct 22, 2013 11:52 AM

I like this. He played very well with NE until he got hurt at the end of the year. He’s a veteran who knows the system. Hopefully he can contribute. Can’t be any worse.

Can he block or catch or throw a pass? The o-line is getting abused, there are tons of drops and Brady has been very inaccurate with a lot of his passes.

  16. jmagee94 says: Oct 22, 2013 12:14 PM

I dont get how we dont sign players like Thomas Howard or Kerry Rhodes when they are just sitting out abd would help big

You might want to check how many times the Pats have lost 2 games in a row under Belichick. I thinks its something like twice in the entire time he’s been there, maybe 3 times.

  21. obmig says: Oct 22, 2013 12:55 PM

2 things you can count on with him are that he will be in shape and he will give 100%. Very good mid season upgrade

  22. jmagee94 says: Oct 22, 2013 1:01 PM

And Then the Falcons signed thonas howard … we need LB’s Sometimes i sit in doubt of Bill Belichick i know he has a good resume but what is the point of going out and playing on the field without the intention to win? We got rid of Welker and im not that upset about that but go get someone that doesn’t get hurt non stop like Danny Amendola hell go get T.O. or Braylen Edwards ,David Nelson was a free agent would of been nice to have him. The pats passed up on Dez Bryant and Demarius Thomas in recent drafts and now we are paying for it we passed up on Dwight Freeny and John Abraham when does the passing up on tallent end? Go get Kerry Rodes go get veteran tallent that will be hungry not no name bums like Maquise Cole

LOL whatnojets, I think a lot of people took that as an insult to thePats but its just the truth…either way. :)

The Pats brought Cribbs in during the offseason but he wasn’t healthy yet, and clearly the Raiders didn’t think he was either or they would have kept him. So the Pats signed Washington. Granted, Washington is not healthy now, but perhaps that ship had already sailed. Cribbs did look like he can still contribute though so it was a good signing for the Jets.

Also, I’m happy about Carter. Love the guy. My guess is that it’s more about having more rotation on the DL than it is about “making up” for anyone.

  24. ialwayswantedtobeabanker says: Oct 22, 2013 1:22 PM

Andre Carter was never the same after blowing a quad, but he now has had sufficient time to get healthy. I believe he’s 34, but if anyone can bring it at that age after that caliber of injury – I think Carter might be the guy.

    The missing piece!

After all, every single time the Pats sign a guy the media and moronic Pats fans act like said player is the missing piece and they are going to win it all. This has been the case for the last 8 freaking seasons.

Hmm, I wonder if the Pats reach 10 straight years without a title if the media and their fans will finally accept it isn’t 2004 anymore.

Whereas Ben Roethlisberger’s time is already over. 2013 Steelers, 2-4
    2012 Steelers, 8-8
2011 Steelers, beaten by Tim Tebow in play-offs.
    LOL!

One and done would be one of the best season’s the Jets have experienced over the past 44 years.

  29. marima07 says: Oct 22, 2013 1:43 PM

Just another patch to try and hold things together and an intensive coaching effort to make it all work, but that’s what this season is about with the sheer number of injuries around the league.

Think it’s time the NFL & NFLPA rethink that new practice policy? So far that change alone is doing more to set back ‘player safety’ than anything.

  31. 6ball says: Oct 22, 2013 1:50 PM

    .

This signing may be more about leadership than talent. Without Wilfork or Mayo the defense is very inexperienced.

Fats, it’s not about winning titles. If it was, then the Colts, Seahawks, 49ers, etc., all had terrible seasons last year, which of course is not true. It’s about being competitive and consistently making the playoffs in the age of salary cap and free agency, which nobody does better than the Patriots.

Funny, I didn’t see a 1 comment saying “this will put them over the top”

Hmm, I wonder when the haters will stop posting on Patriot threads. You know since they haven’t “won anything” in 8 years.

I like Carter, but I’m a little confused here.

They cut Marcus Benard who actually looked great in the pre-season in favor of keeping Jake Bequette (a third round pick who hasn’t done anything to earn a roster spot).

The weak spot on the D line right now is in the interior, which I realize is one of the more difficult positions to find help with mid-season. But I still don’t see what need Carter fills.

    Carter offers great flexibility:

I seem to remember him shifting in from end and playing DT in obvious pass situations.

    It’s the versatility they’re after.

I like the signing, but seriously BILL you need to pay some guys that are play makers and get off your high horse… Only way to burry spygate is to win a championship again legit… Maybe bring in Casey Hampton to help the interior line and go ahead trade for a receiver like nicks or Gordon and pay them them !! Especially if Taliban is healthy pay the guy with a clause if your afraid of another Albert hanesworth type player

  39. nicks1154 says: Oct 22, 2013 6:32 PM

Brady obviously needs weapons … His accuracy hasn’t been there so go out and get a few instead of banking on rookies who are not getting the job done

  41. bobsnygiants says: Oct 22, 2013 8:23 PM

They like to sign old players , because they like to win , sign T.O. AND RANDY , THEY CAN CATCH.
