Defensive end Mario Williams’ first season with the Bills didn’t get off to a very good start, but you can’t say the same about his second year in Buffalo.
Williams has been named the AFC defensive player of the week for the second time this season after putting forth a strong performance in Buffalo’s Week Seven victory over the Dolphins. Williams sacked Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill twice during the second half game and each sack played a big role in getting the Bills an AFC East win.
Williams’ first sack came on a third quarter third down in Bills territory and forced a Dolphins punt. Williams then beat Dolphins right tackle Tyson Clabo a second time and forced a fumble that was recovered by Kyle Williams to set up Dan Carpenter’s game-winning field goal. Williams’ play may have helped convince the Dolphins that they couldn’t stand pat on the offensive line as they traded for Bryant McKinnie the next day.
Williams now has 10 sacks on the year after posting 10.5 last season and would wind up with a career best in that category if he continues along the same pace for the rest of the season. He’d also probably wind up with another weekly prize or two if that turns out to be the case.
