Shad Khan wishes he’d have cleaned house sooner

The Jaguars haven’t offered much in the way of hope, losing each of their seven games by double digits.

But their owner insisted Wednesday they were going about it in the right way.

“Obviously, if you’re a Jaguars fan, we want to do better,” Shad Khan said, via Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union. “But we know the process we started, which is pretty much starting from the ground up, cleaning house and doing something, . . . we probably should have started earlier.”

Upon buying the Jaguars, Khan allowed his inherited staff to invest in free agents, thinking they were close to making the jump from mediocre to good. They weren’t.

Now, they’ve seemed eager to blow it up and start over, trading their left tackle in the middle of the season for a pair of future picks. And Khan said he absolutely trusts General Manager David Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley with the process.

“We’ve got to get more talent,” Khan said. “But I definitely feel we’re moving in the right direction. Status quo, maintaining what we had, was not an option. . . .

“I thought Dave and Gus were absolutely the two right guys for the job and as the season has unfolded, if I could be convinced more, I am.”

Of course, they need to add players, and that is a process that will take more than one offseason. The Jaguars won’t advance until they find a quarterback in particular, and while their current path is uncomfortable, it does put them in a better position to answer the question long-term.
