Sean Lee has no farewell wishes for Jay Ratliff

If there was any doubt that something odd went on between the Cowboys and defensive lineman Jay Ratliff, there should be none now.

Linebacker Sean Lee had nothing good to say about Ratliff during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.

“If you don’t want to be here and play for this team, then move on,” Lee said regarding Ratliff.  “I’d rather go down with guys who want to be here and want to win than win with guys who don’t want to be here.”

But there are still no details about what really happened between Ratliff and the Cowboys.  Cut last week after he became eligible to exit the physically unable to perform list, Ratliff now is hoping to land with a new team.  Owner Jerry Jones, who rarely if ever declines comment on anything, has refused to talk about Ratliff, calling it a legal matter.

“I had said earlier that I thought I was going to focus on good things, the contribution that he made here, how we all need him real bad, this team needs him read bad, needed him real bad,’’ Jones said.  “I was disappointed that he wasn’t playing.  It was disappointing that the resources that are involved here aren’t going to guys out here making plays.’’

Ratliff received $18 million guaranteed under his 2011 contract.  His departure will trigger a $6.98 million cap charge in 2014, at a time when the Cowboys reportedly will be $31 million above the salary cap.

“I won’t be commenting about this because of the fact there are legal issues involved here relative to the league and otherwise,’’ Jones said.  “I don’t want to get into the detail of the expanse of the legal issues that may be involved here.  But that’s the reason I’m not going to get into detail and talk about it.’’

When someone refuses to talk based on legal issues, the person either has legal rights he plans to enforce or fears that legal rights will be enforced against him.  Given these specific circumstances, we’ve got a feeling the Cowboys are considering an effort to recover some of their money and, in turn, some of those resources that could go to the “guys out here making plays.”

  1. Good! instead of focusing on ratliff they should focus on jones for giving out stupid contracts. 31mill over the cap yikes! send over ware for a 2031 6th rounder and Lee for a 2021 7th rounder we need bodies on our niners practice squad..

  2. The mystery part is he has been medically cleared by doctors. The reason he was cut was because he told the cowboys he couldn’t play. Beyond that everything else is speculation (and even that is somewhat speculative).

But I think if Sean Lee is willing to say something bad about you, you did something bad, Sean Lee isn’t one to say stupid things.

  3. Or he could get sued for saying how he really feels. But who is the guy that gave him this contract? If you aren’t happy with what a player delivers on his contract, then go talk to the guy that offered it to him. That’s where the problem happened.

Did they let you out on good behavior?

  5. Jerah expresses himself regarding this situation as though he is a detached, innocent bystander somewhere within the organization. Tinker Bell is not responsible for terrible drafting, horrid contracts OR cap problems Jerah, YOU are culpable. Hiding behind legalize does not change the situation and it fools exactly NO ONE!!

  6. I loved Ratliff as a player, he played a tough position as an undersized DT, but when he got hurt, something got weird with him. suddenly he’s temperamental and doesn’t trust the training staff, refused to rehab with the team or even let team doctors exam in him and his progress. I bet anything Jones is going to sue him for breach of contract

  7. Ratliff seems like a turd and I’m sure Jerry has been looking for a way to flush him since that locker room incident last year. He got in Jerry’s face and screamed at him in front of the rest of the team. Players had to step in and separate them. You know Jerry hasn’t forgotten that and there is no doubt he will do everything he can to not pay Ratliff another dime. I don’t blame him at all. I wouldn’t like it if an employee stole money from me either.

Notice how these things never happen in Pittsburgh?
    ===================================

I think half of Pittsburgh moved here to Dallas for a better life. And half of Cali. Well, half the country is moving here.

  9. I really like Lee. I’d take him on my team before most LBs in the league…and Kuechley (Carolina) will be a stud as well.

  10. Didn’t Jay Ratliff’s grandma die in a house fire a few years back and Jerry Jones lined up his personal jet to send him to her funeral? I’m not a Cowboys fan, but I will say that they treat their people pretty well for the most part. To turn your back on people who did their best to treat you right is sad. Karma Jay, Karma.

  11. woodrree7,
He got weird after that big contract (read: He didn’t feel like working anymore). Haynesworth Jr.

  12. 49er fan …why don’t you ask Navarro Bowman if Lee is worth more than a seventh round pick. If it wasn’t for Lee, Paterno might have kept Bowman in his dog house forever. Good teammates are worth it.
Lee is a good teammate who seems to never have harsh words for any teammate . When he speaks like this there must be something to it.

  13. Say what you want about Jerry, he may be the worst gm of all time but he doesnt seem like a bad guy..after Lee’s comments, we can all assume Jay was the problem here.

    Also, steelers suck!

  14. Good to see folks on here tired of the Steelers fans. Pittsburgh is a step up from Chernobyl. Nobody wants to live there. Most of the fans around the country have never even been there. Go ahead and ask a Steelers fan in Chicago, or LA. They try to explain it like some six degrees of separation scenario, when they just latched on in the 70’s.

  15. “Ratliff got paid and Jerry got played”.

I think Jerry wants to know why
    1. Rat’s agent says the injury was worse than Jerry realized but didn’t mention it before June when Jerry could have cut rat and saved a lot of money?

    2. Rat was cleared to play this week by doctors right after being cut. He was on the PUP for 6 weeks.

Rat didn’t want to play for Jerry. But he didn’t mind taking his money. I’m with Lee on this one.

  16. I’m hearing Miami might be interested in Ratliff. Miami has serious issues going on with the O-line and Ireland has to stop relying on Cowboys retreads for the Dolphins. This guy is obviously not ready for primetime.

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Care to explain all these ” terrible drafts” Jerry has had? By and large I am quite pleased with his drafts.People laughed at tge Travis Fredrick pick, yet they have a starting center and used the extra pick to grab Terrence Williams. I’m not sad with any of that at all.

People call Thomas dimitroff a genius and his team has no oline, no D line and no depth and signs horrible free agenys like Steven jackson, Ed hartwell and Ray Edwards

  18. Here’s hoping Jerry Jones breaks out the Power Point presentation outlining all the grievances the Cowboys have with Ratliff. Bonus points if Jerry has a band aid on his forehead.
