With QB injuries mounting, Vince Young wonders why he isn’t getting called

Many starting quarterbacks around the league have gone down with injuries in recent weeks forcing teams to look outside their organizations for help at the position.

The St. Louis Rams lost Sam Bradford for the season to a torn ACL. The Chicago Bears will be without Jay Cutler for at least a month after tearing his groin. The Cleveland Browns lost Brian Hoyer to a torn ACL as well. It’s created roster spots for free agent quarterbacks to find new teams to play for.

However, one quarterback still not getting a call is Vince Young.

The Rams signed two quarterbacks after the injury to Sam Bradford. The Buffalo Bills added Matt Flynn after his release from the Oakland Raiders. The Chicago Bears re-signed Jordan Palmer. In an interview with Alex Marvez and Gil Brandt on Sirius XM NFL Radio, Young questioned why he’s not getting a chance.

“Me and my wife and all my peers and fans, we’re all trying to figure this stuff out. I don’t have the slightest idea. It’s like a huge question mark over my head every day I wake up in the morning to take care of my responsibilities and know I should be playing,” Young said. “To not have one of those calls, it’s tough.”

Young spent the preseason with the Green Bay Packers and looked to have made the final 53-man roster when the team released Graham Harrell. However, Young was also let go as the team elected to keep just two quarterbacks in Aaron Rodgers and B.J. Coleman. Young completed 6 of 7 passes for 41 yards and a touchdown with three carries for 39 yards in an impressive showing against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3 of the preseason. He finished the preseason completing 53-percent of his passes with a touchdown and no interceptions in four games played.

“All the work I put into that short time I was there I was very shocked to get cut and to hear that news the next day,” Young said.

Young has been without a job ever since.

“You’ve got to still wake up every day and do what you have to,” Young said. “I’ve got my little ones running around that I have to take care of and try not to think about the negative of it and hopefully the opportunity will come knocking on the door or the phone will ring.”

Because coaches like to run a full playbook, not the two or three plays Vince Young can get down and keep in his head.

Maybe because he was an overhyped college QB who won the national championship as a running quarterback , and who helped get Jeff Fisher fired from the Tennessee Titans.

Vince is better then 95% of these backups and 40% of the starters..can’t understand why he’s not on a NFL roster..Yes I do #BLACKballd

c’mon Fisher. Try him out at least

  9. harrywarden15 says: Oct 24, 2013 12:53 AM

Both he and Tebow really should have jobs right now as backups. They’ve both done a lot more winning at this level than the likes of Brady Quinn, Jordan Palmer, Austin Davis, etc. Both are clearly being blackballed by the league for reasons other than football and it’s sad.

The Browns seriously have nothing to lose signing VY and taking a chance. I guess nobody can look past what happened in Tennessee. Kinda feel bad for the guy. There’s definitely a nice handful of QBs that started for NFL teams this year that can’t hold a candle to VY’s athleticism.

I don’t get it.. vikes, browns, rams.. come in son!!

For a backup QB, teams are generally either looking for a young player with potential or a seasoned veteran that can help mentor the starter. At age 30, he’s not young anymore and nobody sees him as a veteran mentor. So that doesn’t leave him with many options.

Whatever his issues,he has shown at least as much ability as most of these retreads, and shown a whole lot more than some of them…it does seem the barrel is being scraped pretty hard without his name coming up….

  17. doctorrustbelt says: Oct 24, 2013 3:03 AM

    Why?!?

    1) 50 CAREER starts

    2) 46 td — 51 int

    3) 149 yards per game

    4) 40 fumbles

  18. bigguy54 says: Oct 24, 2013 3:12 AM

It has to be collusion, because it couldn’t have anything to do with you.

How bad will he feel if the Browns brought in Garcia, and did not give him a call? I wonder if he would get the message then?

  19. hurricane73 says: Oct 24, 2013 3:13 AM

    HEY VINCE,

    IT’S OVER!!!
Get a real job like so many other NFL players do when the time comes. Can you not even get a job from some rich UofT alum who only remembers you before you went loco (or at least before the world knew you were)?

    Yours Truly,
    Life

It all boils down to risk vs reward. I like Vince as a player, and I am pretty sure he could win some games for some folks. That episode that happened a few years back is scary for the PR department though. With all the gun violence and workplace shootings in the news cycle, the risk is greater than the reward at this point for NFL teams that are trying to maintain and grow their brand. Maybe Vince needs to get an all-clear from more than one pshrink and clear the air.

  21. dobberdubinsky says: Oct 24, 2013 3:54 AM

Probably because he gave the teams the wrong phone number.

  22. lawyermalloy says: Oct 24, 2013 4:17 AM

Duh………….You’re getting NO call because you stink!

  23. ferdfteenthousand says: Oct 24, 2013 5:00 AM

Just ball out in Canada and prove yourself again …stop acting like a victim and man up.

  24. kp54 says: Oct 24, 2013 5:48 AM

Its a shame how VY is being treated. I always believe he was blacklisted now I know he is.
    A 31-19 QB unreal.

  25. GenXJay says: Oct 24, 2013 6:59 AM

    Vinny Testeverde has better chances.

  26. noeffinway says: Oct 24, 2013 7:19 AM

He is now a former packer backup QB, and the word is out how that works out….lol…they all suck! So his chances to get picked up by an nfl team are over.

  27. eaglesfan29 says: Oct 24, 2013 7:42 AM

He is better then half the QB I’m the league today it’s a shame.

  28. h0c2000 says: Oct 24, 2013 8:32 AM

No one is calling because you suck Vince.

  29. firstand4ever says: Oct 24, 2013 8:42 AM

Even EA sports deleted Vince Young from their free agent list so no teams can sign him in Madden 25. This guy is being black balled even in video games.

Truth is Vince Young should have at the very least a job as an NFL backup. He’s better and his resume is better than a lot of the guys who do have jobs. I’d start him in Jacksonville right now.

  30. djstat says: Oct 24, 2013 9:01 AM

Cause you have had your chances and you have blown it. Your a washed up never will be BUM. Go away

  31. doubleogator says: Oct 24, 2013 9:32 AM

    just go look at film…

  32. nyjetsfan08 says: Oct 24, 2013 10:04 AM

I think someone should give him a shot. I mean, really, you’d rather have Brady Quinn than Vince Young?

  33. keepyerstickontheice says: Oct 24, 2013 10:10 AM

The reason you’re not getting called is because you don’t know why you’re not getting calls.

  34. realfootballfan says: Oct 24, 2013 10:32 AM

Well, Vince, I know one team helmed by a coach with a terrific porn stache who will never, ever be calling you.

  35. larjones64 says: Oct 24, 2013 11:28 AM

VY is a douchenozzle that’s why he’s not getting called. No leadership traits

  36. jpaq68 says: Oct 24, 2013 11:30 AM

    Wonder no more, Vince.

    It’s because you suck.

  37. atkinsandgreenreignsupreme says: Oct 24, 2013 11:52 AM

Vince you would be a definite upgrade here in Cincy over Josh Johnson… keep your head up and the blessing will come. Good luck

  38. scotrugby says: Oct 24, 2013 1:24 PM

    Vince,

Please look deep within yourself and ask this question:

What does it say about my ability as a QB if the St. Louis Rams would rather start Kellen Clemens than call me in for a tryout?

I will answer it for you in the style of Charles Barkley. You are terrrrrrrrribblllle!

  39. darkneptune73 says: Oct 24, 2013 2:14 PM

Vikings should sign him so that they can break the record for most starting QB’s in one season.
