The Bills released cornerback Brandon Burton on Friday, the club said.

There was no corresponding transaction announced, which leaves an open roster spot.

On Friday, coach Doug Marrone indicated the Bills could potentially activate rookie running back Ronnie Wingo from the practice squad if C.J. Spiller (ankle) were unable to play Sunday at New Orleans, BuffaloBills.com reported, citing an interview with 550 AM in Buffalo.

Per Mike Rodak of ESPN.com, Spiller was a spectator early in practice on Friday. He did not practice Wednesday or Thursday.

Burton, 23, notched six tackles in five regular-season games with Buffalo in 2013. He appeared in a combined 14 regular-season contests with Minnesota in the previous two seasons.
